View Full Version : Broadband in Sheffield (S20)
Haydn1971 05-01-2008, 12:07 I've been on Broadband with Demon Internet since I moved into my current house in May 2003, before that I had ISDN through them at my old adress, dail up before that... Overall I've been with Demon since 1996 and been totally happy with the quality of service, including the internet service, the homepages servers and the technical advice on the few occations that I've need to contact them.
However, my ADSL speed is getting slower and slower - Today I've done a speed test which gave me about 2300kbps, but my router is reading 3200kbps... My download speeds through uTorrent max out at about 270kB/s, but are typically around the 180-200kB/s so would suggest a rate of 1600kbps
This is miles away from the 8Mbps, but I live about 2 miles from the exchange, so would expect a slightly lower speed to cover the losses over the 2 miles.... I used to get something like a 4.8Mbps service when I first moved in, now it's below 2Mbps - is this becoming the norm in Sheffield, in particular S20, or could I get a speedier service from someone other than Demon Internet
I'm guessing its a BT problem rather than the Internet Provider, so what are the alternatives - I have a HSDPA modem for my laptop, which gives me a peak of what it says on the box - 1.8Mbps - what is ADSL2 like in this area, has anyone tried a lower contension ratio service or even the new dual ADSL services
I'm not too worried about price, but keeping it below circa £30 would be preferable....
Help !
Paolo Coopio 05-01-2008, 13:00 Funny you should say that. The speed round where I live recently has become painful.
Upto 8MB allowed. I get anywhere between 2-4MB in the daytime but as soon as 4pm hits the speed crashes completely and speed tests are basically telling me im getting somewhere near ISDN connections.
I've put it down to local area kids getting home from school and turning on their bandwidth intensive file sharing and gaming applications.

Perhaps they are fed up with you nicking all the bandwith downloading illegal torrents and are throttling your ports, try reading their FUP.

Try going to the config settings and changing the wireless channel it's using. 7 is normally a good one.
192.168.1.1 is usually how you get there, and user/pass is normally admin / admin

Who said anything about illegal ? - there is terabytes worth of legal material on bit-torrent, even the BBC have a bit-torrent based catch up media player...
My post is about speed of service - I'm supposed to get upto 8Mbps, but I'm only getting a quarter of that speed - regardless of what amount I download...

Oh, right, well there is a freebies section for XL broadband users with free music, games, downloads etc.
I'm in Halfway, S20. I changed to Sky last year, and noticed an increase in speed.
Sky is unbundled, that is, they have their own equipment in the exchange. So you jump straight onto their platform, instead of sharing with other ISPs which go on BT tubes.
If you have Sky TV, you may save a few bob as well.

24mb download, 1.3mb upload for £18 a month. They have a FUP but have never enacted it (I can tell you now that they don't have download limits: I have probably downloaded in excess of 500gb in a month and not had a warning/service restrictions).
I get torrent speeds of around 2600KBps on Be. Due to your distance from the exchange you will probably be a bit slower (but I'd imagine faster than you are on now).
BT broadband in Hunters Bar keeps slowing down and stopping completely.

I have never seen any sky equipment in any exchange. I believe they use BT wholesales equipment
sixriver 08-01-2008, 11:53 Stick your postcode in this exchange checker http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php
You will be able to find out which companies have their own equipment in the exchange. Any that don't will be using BT equipment.
