Wanting to go for a meal this weekend or next, and I fancy tapas. The only one I have been to is La Vina, which was gorgeous but I want to try something different!

Have read that Runaway Girl do tapas, can anyone reccommend their food? Or is Platillos nice?

Cheers

:)

There's one on West Street but I can't remember the name of it. It was a while ago that I last went but I thought it was pretty good. I'll try and remember the name... I'm thinking La Mancha but I'm not sure if I just made that up...

I also found another one which I remember someone recommended to me once as well.

I have worked in many a tapas restauant in Sheffield and unfortunately as La Vina's food has gone down the pan its platillos first, then la mancha in my book.

Incidentaly, if anyone knows of a damn good chef, send him to La Vina asap!

I've tried La Mancha on West and Cubana's on Trippet. At both I have never had a complaint - I remember thinking last time at La Mancha (having gone well over 5 times) the menu was a bit old-hat (just me getting used to it) and there's nothing special about the restaurant, location or service - it's just all very nice - pleasant. On the other hand, Cubana's I felt was a little more authentic - I seem to remember it being darker and more intimate too. I believe there's live music scheduled regularly - not sure what night, but a search would sort that out for you. So - for the next time, it'll be Cubana's or one of the others mentioned above for me.

I agree.

Avoid Cubana, it's been horrible the last two times i've been.

Have had tapas at Runaway girl, Cubana and La mancha also at La Tasca in Meadowhall which isn't that bad actually.

I think the nicest tapas in town are at Las Iguanas or at Wig and Pen.

We've been to Las Iguanas twice now and each time it's been not the best experience. The food was cold and not very nice the first time, I know I should have complained at the time but I don't like to complaint about food (I know people will slate me for this) The second time, the food was overcooked, took nearly an hour for the main course and the service was shocking. I always give a place a second chance in case it was a one off but this wasn't.

Somewhere i would recommend is La Mancha, the food is devine, the service is fantastic and it's reasonably priced. Even when we went with 20 people for a works night out it was just as good as I had said it would be.

I'm looking forward to going there with about 30 people for my maternity leaving do type thingy.

I intend to try Platillos next time we're out for food in town.

I've had tapas at most of the places listed on here, and have never been moved to comment but yesterday i had tapas in Wig and Pen and have to say it was the most awful food i've ever paid for in a bar. Two of us ordered what was described as 'Chef's selection tapas platter served with bread, slad and chutney', expecting a little mixture of some thinsg from the tapas menu at the chef's discretion, we also thought we'd get more variety by both ordering.

Well, we each got an identical offering, which was quite honestly pathetic- nothing you could call tapas by any stretch of the imagination. Half a small slice of swiss type cheese. 3 slices of half inch diamter salami, a piece of grilled picked pepper, half a canned artichokle heart, a 2 inch square of vile, plain, cold mackerel. To top it all, half a slice of sliced ham. Not yer coppa/ parma cured ham- boiled, processed formed sliced tesco type ham. With this dismal cold insult than k goodness for the accomoanying 'bread, salad and chutney'.

Half a slice of bread. about 4 beetroot leaves with a half teaspoon of chutney.

We told the staff that we were disappointed with the chef's selection and that it didnt seem to sell the tapas menu very well if that was the best they could offer, they didnt seem very bothered.

Pathetic.

was just about to post saying how much I enjoyed my tapas at Wig and Pen, till I read the last post! To be fair, it was a year ago and I can't remember what we had, but would have strongly recommended it. I've also had really great food at La Vina before - at other restaurants in the chain though, not the Sheffield one. Perhaps the Wig and pen has gone downhill - any other recent reviews? What a shame if it has. Am also looking forward to trying Platillos, especially as it's an (i think) independent restaurant in an area dominated by chains, good luck to them.

Just to update we have been for tapas and now and can throughly reccommend K Pasa!

Was great value for money, only problem was servings were twice the size compared to La Vina, despite being same price. Meant we ordered far too much, but the food was beautiful!

Great value for money, friendly staff and would def go again, although am looking forward to trying all the other places reccommended! :hihi:

Thanks for everyones help!

That surprises me. I've never had a bad plate in there. The cheese is usually manchego which is very nice. I'd be surprised if they were selling processed meat. Did you speak to any of the managers? Or the chef (big guy with a 'tache)?

:clap:We had great Tapas at Taste on Eccie Road last month. Apparently they do their Tapas night once a month as an alternative to their regular bistro menu. The food was exceptional, very unusual, and very reasonably priced indeed. BYOB a massive bonus!!! Me can very recommend indeed.

Wig & Pen Tapas is exceptional in my opinion and would be very suprised if the cheese was below par. The dinner menu has once again one of the most exciting cheese lists I have seen, even better than the last one I think and the cheeses on the lunch menu are all fantastic too (go for the Vacherin if you are in!). The pepper sounds like piquillo pepper, exceptionally tasty and very authentic. As is Manchego if that is the cheese you had. Would be suprised if the meat was processed - although I am vegetarian. Usually they have 20 month aged Serrano ham, French Salami, Poitrine Fume and others. Not sure them being the same was exactly suprising - perhaps a meat platter and a tapas platter would have given more variety - or ordering six dishes you wanted to try and sharing them?

Thanks, abe79, I was ‘surprised’ too, nay gibsmacked, that the wig and pen was so poor: it does have that excellent reputation.

The pepper was more like the ones I get from Lidl to puree for sauces, certainly not piquillo, no. (quoting foodie website: "The piquillo pepper, from Spain's Navarra region, is small, red, slightly hot and unlike any other pepper. It is triangular in shape and slightly curved, with dense fleshy sides and a sweet, balanced flavour" this was a big flabby yellow job)
The ham was boiled ham, the sort which has been shaped into a rectangle and sliced then packed with water and usually sold in the supermarket with 4 -5 slices in. Gross, I wouldn’t put it on a sandwich. It wasn’t Serrano. The cheese wasnt manchego, which next to Basque ewe's cheese is my favourite.
When we ordered we specifically said we'd order two 'chefs special selection platters' so the chef could select a variety, and asked the waitress to explain we'd share the lot.
We complained to the waitress who said she'd fetch somebody over, she came back and said no-one was able to speak to us but she had passed our comments on.
Perhaps they are getting complacent, perhaps they were having an off day. Perhaps the chef wasn’t there that day- as no chef would have served that let alone ‘specially selected it’.

Mind you, seeing as every one of Abe69’s previous 6 posts happen to be plugging wig an pen, perhaps your biased in some way? Still, if you're making an offer of 6 dishes to share, we'd take you up on it! ;-) Otherwise, like i say, the 'chef's selection' didnt bode well enough for the menu to warrant paying for 6 dishes.

I'd have to suggest the Runaway - been a few times and the food is always spot on.

Probably a Grigliati pepper then!

I am unashamedly biased to Wig & Pen as since I moved to Sheffield it is the only place I have really consistently enjoyed, not ashamed of that. Sorry you don't share that, but such is life.

just seems odd to have a forum acount and only EVER post to promote one bar- as every one of abe79's 7 posts have been. No posts on any other topic. If you're the owner, fair enough, but pretending to just be an impressed member of the tapas eating public seems peculiar!
