View Full Version : What keeps causing a computer to "freeze"?
pattricia 04-01-2008, 12:36 I know this has probably been asked before but if I search for it too long, my computer will probably "freeze" in the middle of it. Can you explain to me why this happens, as mine is doing it more and more. Please any suggestions ?

That'd do it :hihi:
Stick to one of them... I'd advise to atick with AVG + lose Norton, but that's me.

Ah, this link is handy donky7, thanks.!! :)
newvanandman 04-01-2008, 13:32 it could be a software issue, but equally could be a sign the hard drive has problems.
does it do it with some things and not others,or does it do it with anything?
The software issue.
do a hard drive test, you can easily download one from the net.
if that doesnt fail then i would format and reinstall windows.
Anti virus programs are nearly impossible to remove without leaving windows unstable.if it is one of them causing it,your unlikley to fix it.reinstalling windows is the only sure way.
you havnt said what operating system it is,which could also make a difference.

Yes, once it starts to freeze, it does it with everything. I have Firefox browser & AVg security. What is that hard test drive ?
newvanandman 04-01-2008, 13:42 on a quick search i found this
http://www.programurl.com/hard-drive-test-pilot.htm
how old is the computer, what operating system is it running?
Overheating is a sign of freezing too (contradiction in terms haha!)
If your PC isn't in warranty, take the side off it and check all the fans are working correctly on the MOBO and heatsink, and if yours has an exhaust fan at the back which drags all the hot air out, check that too.
If your PC is over a year old, it may well be a good idea to buy some compressed air from PC World/Maplins and give the heatsink and MOBO etc. a blast with it as dust accumulating in them causes it to act like a duvet cover and kills components much quicker.
BTW. you should only have 1 antivirus software running/installed at any one time! This does cause conflicts, especially if you have Norton or McAfee.
Good luck,
Space
pattricia 04-01-2008, 14:18 Well it seems that it could be a few things. It is in front of a radiator(which I switch off when possible) so could be overheating, and do have two ant-virus things running together. The computer is about 2 years old.
Should I take Norton off ? How do I do it ? :)Rip the hard drive out and throw it out of the window. Only half joking!
Norton is a piece of poo and harder to remove than a Virus, which is majorly ironic, esp as it it well known for conflicting with other software and bodging one's computer. Last I had to remove Norton, I reformatted the HD and reinstalled every all over again.

Oh, dear, sounds grim ! :gag:
pattricia 04-01-2008, 14:54 Its funny cos once it gets going its O.K. When it is O.K. Im wondering wether to keep it on all the time, day & night, at the "start" page, and see if that helps.:)
pattricia 04-01-2008, 16:04 Right according to the link, and to find out why my computer frequently freezes, I have to press the "Num Lock Key" and watch NUM Lock LED to see if it turns OFF and / or ON. But where is the NUM LOCK key ?
That link regarding NumLock seems a little strange. Depending on what type of Keyboard you are using Numlock is usually in one of two places. If you're on a standard keyboard for a desktop PC it's above the numerical keypad which is to the right, Numlock is in the top left corner of the keypad. If you're on a lap top you will have to wait for someone else to answer because I can't remember where it is. Personally I think it could be a conflict with you running two Anti virus programs.

Thanks Mod-Man for your reply. I think if it carries on, I will have it looked at, as when I put new programmes on like AVG, I never take the old ones off( Like Norton). Even though Im on Broadband, I still have the old Dial Up Logo coming on my screen, so I think an expert would be good to have in an tidy all of my computer up. Who is the best one to bring in ? Ive been looking in Yellow Pages this afternoon.( I have a lap top & still cannot see NUMLOCK)

Why be charged when I could have a look for you for free. I'm sure it just needs a little tidy up, I don't know of any companies because I maintain my own machine. The offer is there if you need the help.
Edited This picture should help you find NumLock. (http://northlite.net/ps/images/keyboard.jpg) As it says press the Fn key and F8, I imagine it should be the same on all Lap-Tops.

Will go and try to find out where NumLock is on a lappy.
Thats so kind of you Mod-Man. My computer must have heard us both discussing it, as its behaving itself at the moment.:hihi::hihi:
Just in case you didn't notice my edit in the last post.

newvanandman 04-01-2008, 19:18 i would recomend backing up anything you dont wish to lose at this stage, because if it gets anymore serious you might lose the option.

Thank you, I am taking note of all advice.:)
SimpyTimpy 04-01-2008, 19:43 Hey there Pattricia.
There could be a few reasons why your computer is freezing up, although the majority of the time is because Windows has failed to provide each running application enough power to run. Depending on how, and when it's freezing could help diagnose the problem though:
1. If you're seeing a blue screen when the computer freezes then Windows at least knows something is wrong with the system. Generally graphic card and hard drive problems will throw up the blue screen (although not always).
2. If the computer is freezing without any error messages being shown then it could well be because of software conflicting with one another - like said in this thread already - having two anti-virus programs is going to affect the performance of your computer. For example, Norton is notorious for effecting computer performance for even the latest desktops/laptops, so adding AVG to that is only going to cause problems.
3. Viruses or spyware could also easily be the causes of the problem.
4. Any program with a memory leak would cause problems on your computer. By memory leak I mean that instead of it recycling the resources that it's already using, gradually the application eats up more and more RAM and eventually grinds your PC to a halt.
It does sound like it's in serious need of a clean up though. Some nice chap will more that likely help you out on these forums for free :)
helenander 04-01-2008, 22:14 Thanks Mod-Man for your reply. I think if it carries on, I will have it looked at, as when I put new programmes on like AVG, I never take the old ones off( Like Norton). Firstly, you should never have two anti-virus software programs on, you might think it is safer but actually it can cause no end of problems. As someone else on here said Norton doesn't make it easy to remove, but you can download a removal tool.
tinyurl.com/6oq8f
I would then run (free download) spybot search and destroy to make sure their are no other nasties lurking.
Give the PC a good clean up, remove any unwanted, unnecessary programs, if you are confident at this. Then give a disc clean up and a defrag, If you don't know how to do this then just ask and I will reply in more detail.
Computers are like cars, they really do need a good service every year to keep running smoothly.
There should be some local PC technicians that could do a good clean up or health check for you.
If not we can offer remote support if you have a broadband connection.

monomiel 04-01-2008, 22:29 I had that problem last week ... and just changed the cooler. Now my computer is working without problems.
terminator 05-01-2008, 13:48 Have a look in your event viewer and see if there is any issues.
could just be software related / a driver issue / a corruption in operating system / heat related / hardware problems worse case the motherboard however this is normally only down to capacitors and can be very easy fix
