View Full Version : Strange smells in town
Just a thought about the smells I'v encountered in town lately[1] 52 bus stop at the bottom of castlegate, open sewer vent in the middle of the road, it stinks, sheffield must be the only place in britain that lets somebody vent a main sewer at ground level in the city centre.
[2] the smell coming out of the pubs near the B&C and the old courthouse is very heady to say the least, do'snt bother me but there seems to be a lot of kids hanging around outside do the cops know ?, do the cops care?do the landlords {if you can call them that] know or care?,
I worked in a city centre pub for 3yrs and could tell what every one of the punters was up to at almost any given moment, any barman worth their salt can. So is it ignorance or something else?
theres a shop on fargate, not sure of the name of it. its quite far up near foot locker. i think that smells awful, sorry if i offend anyone who works there but its a sickly perfume type smell thats so overpowering and follows you up or down the street! :gag:
i couldn't work there, it'd give me a headache:(
I know the one you mean it's all mango coconut flowery stuff that you can wash / shampoo / rub in / soak in kind of things that trendy people use

That'll be Lush. 'tis a lovely smell.
by the way I love the ads
<<< that appear on the left which allways seem to be just off the point.
i've never seen what the shops called, just the smell of it as i wander by. my eyes bloomin' water too much too read it anyhow!:hihi: :P ;)
fridgeman 14-02-2005, 06:55 :) you want to go inside and look round at all the wonderous smelly things they sell,i was only in for five mins and the strong perfume smell was still with me three hours later.
i know what mean- was in hillsborough the other day and could smell a faint whiff of pork scratchings in the air- strange that!!!
Tali5Man 14-02-2005, 10:14 A sickly smell of jam and sponge often pervades around the Birley Carr area. I attribute it to the food factory along the A61 - the one with the big LCD display that tells you the current temperature.

I believe you refer to the 'Fresh Jam Doughnuts' smell from the Fletcher's bread bakery!
Beautifull!

Lush is the most fab smelling shop of any. I personally wonder though why it smells so strong? The smell is often as strong 100 feet away as it is within the shop.
Do you reckon they pump the smell out into the street?
Apparrently, supermarkets used to deliberately pump the smell of baking bread around the store to make people hungry and buy more!

I know what you mean, also there's a strong gas smell around the new courthouse too. I have to hold my breath as I'm walking past!

I thought it was part of the manufacturing process rather than faulty drains?

has anyone ever smelt the distinct smell of cheap burgers near drakehouse at crystal peaks???
Always smells ok at first but after 10 seconds its enough to put you off meat for life.
theres a restaurant called 'damons' by crystal peaks. i have never been so can't comment on the food but the smell wafts for miles, like a flame grilled burger smell. it always smells that bit too strong for me and god knows what local residents must feel..... good or bad to live with it
when i visit crystal peaks, go to that side (near the petrol station) and thats what you smell.... quite over powering.:(

Its not actually from damons though, its from a processed food factory behind drakehouse.
Make packaged sandwiches and things like that so are always cooking huge amounts of meat..
PaulTansley 19-02-2005, 03:57 There was a smell of sewage outside the Tesco at Westminster last week boy it reeked, and it was'nt the politicians.
Lush also have shops in the London railway stations but don't smell as strong as the one here on Fargate.

matthewluck 27-02-2005, 02:27 Interesting topic!!!
The alleyway next to R&R bar, leading to mfi carpark at the city centre end of London road, always smells of some kind of strong cleaning fluid, its strange.
I use this alley most weekday mornings as a short-cut on my way to Collegiate Crescent.
matt :)

They probably have to swill the area out if there is vom or pee in the passage next to the pub or near the back door.
