View Full Version : CBBC presenter Mark Speight found dead.
Zinger549 04-01-2008, 12:12 Mark Speight presented of Smart and Smarteenies has been arrested after the death of Natasha Collins who is believed to be his girlfriend.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7171292.stm
According to Sky News the police are looking at it being 'non-suspicious' - she had been suffering fits after a previous road accident that left her in a coma and are also awaiting toxicology which could take a week or two. She also wasn't 'believed' to be his girlfriend - they were in a long term serious relationship and lived together.
cressida 04-01-2008, 13:05 yes I read it as 'death unexplained'
bigthanks 04-01-2008, 13:23 Oh my..... :(
Oh I remember them both in See It Saw It (http://www.brechin.com/seeitsawit/pictures.html)
she was a beautiful girl.... :(
How sad.
RIP Natasha Collins
My thoughts are with her family and friends.
weenireeni 04-01-2008, 18:45 God what a terrible story, I caught the end of it on the news, but hadn't heard it was him involved.
How tragic :(
He was only arrested as a formality.
I like Mark Speight - hope he's innocent.
I like Mark Speight - hope he's innocent.
can't imagine MS hurting a fly
They said on the news that the BBC have cancelled the showing of SMart for tomorrow, methinks Mr Speight might become an unemployment statistic before too long, he's probably innocent but I doubt the BBC suits will want to take the risk of having someone who MIGHT not be on their books.
muddycoffee 04-01-2008, 19:25 I have never heard of either of them or the programmes which they appear on, although it is interesting to see that the website describes the dead woman as being 31 years of age, while BBC radio 4 has been describing her as 21 all day.
2437_SNT 04-01-2008, 19:40 has he not been arrested for supplying cocain as well as murder?
2437_SNT 04-01-2008, 19:41 I've just re-checked my facts and it does say thats what he's under investigation for.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7171292.stm
he's been released on bail.
Taximark 05-01-2008, 02:12 RIP -NC - horrible only 31.
SimpyTimpy 05-01-2008, 05:09 BBC will sack him for using cocaine and he'll end up being a sky sports news presenter :P
swordfish1 05-01-2008, 07:21 New from The Sun (so it has to be true!).

New from The Sun (so it has to be true!).

Would the media please make up their minds regarding the age of the victim? :loopy:
The Sun says she's 32, BBC said she's same age as me (31), she's even been put as being 21! :loopy:
Alastair 05-01-2008, 19:14 That's a horrific situation, to find your partner dead then be arrested by the police.

How absolutely tragic! Very sad.

Thats so sad
well harsh. . but I gets the feeling there's more to this than meets the eye. .
condolences to the family of course. .
Strange. I thought he was cleared of any direct wrongdoing- I mean, he used drugs but was not being chased on a murder charge, was he? Maybe it was more to do with his reputation as a childrens presenter being in tatters as well as the death of his g/f that pushed him to end his life..
KJ_VENOM 13-04-2008, 17:00 He blamed himself for his partner's death, His guilt (however mis-placed) and his partner's family obviously didn't blame him as he was living with them, and the loss of someone who he loved seem to have driven him to take his own life
My condolences go to both families.
Grim Reaper 13-04-2008, 17:03 Threads merged
I've never forgiven him for calling me fat when I was a kid...
Although seriously this is very sad, he'd had a rough time recently from what the papers say - hate to think how his family must feel.
Plain Talker 13-04-2008, 17:25 the BBC news have also said that it looks like the body found is his.
it's terrible sad, he brought a lot of joy to the kids who loved his TV programmes, and were encouraged to take an interest in art and creativity. I hope to goodness he's found peace. :(
Rivelin6 13-04-2008, 18:02 Very sad news, I used to love watching his programmes with my daughter when she was growing up
sTaGeWaLkEr 13-04-2008, 19:19 At least his demons are no longer troubling him.
RIP mate. x
What a sad and needless waste of 2 lives. It's also very sad to realize that there are still people out there who think "drugs are good".

You won't beleive the amount of people who take recreational drugs.
You won't beleive the amount of people who take recreational drugs.
I suppose these people just turn a blind eye to events like this and pretend they never happen........
xxsarahxx 13-04-2008, 20:09 sad news, my condolences go to his family.
r.i.p xx
frostiekazza 13-04-2008, 20:23 just heard about this .Its so , so sad :( .I remember watching him when i was young and my two kids have grown up watching Smart .
My son loves Mark because of all the silly faces he pulls :)
R.I.P Mark
Back with your beloved Natasha
Condolenses to his family

I suppose these people just turn a blind eye to events like this and pretend they never happen........
Well a lot of them won't be the type who feel the need to get absolutely parted from reality when at home with their partner on all sorts- sid and nancy style. I think most are just a bedtime spliff or a line at the christmas do, never the less drug use is rife...
ShinyPurple 13-04-2008, 20:46 This is so sad - he was one of my son's heroes :(
My condolences to both families and his friends.
I suppose these people just turn a blind eye to events like this and pretend they never happen........
You suppose entirely wrongly. Mark Speights death is a tragedy and a huge loss to his loved ones regardless of whether or not one has ever indulged in recreational drug taking.
cressida 13-04-2008, 20:58 He'll be sorely missed, R.I.P.
I would say such a shame, but I won't. What I will say is that they both made a positive contribution whilst here. We should remember that and ignore the untimely ending though both had.
Don_Kiddick 13-04-2008, 21:04 Why has the thread on the death of Mark been merged with one started in January that was about his g/f being found dead?
Have the mods had an eppy? :loopy:
I liked Mark - he was a fun, funny talented presenter.
bigthanks 13-04-2008, 21:09 I will echo what others have said, my children loved Mark he was a really funny guy, with a great personality! It is so damn sad. :( Condolences go to his Family and those who knew him. R.I.P Mark.
pinklady 13-04-2008, 21:15 what a tragic waste of 2 lives ... bloody drugs!
pennypie 13-04-2008, 22:42 Strange. I thought he was cleared of any direct wrongdoing- I mean, he used drugs but was not being chased on a murder charge, was he? Maybe it was more to do with his reputation as a childrens presenter being in tatters as well as the death of his g/f that pushed him to end his life..
He was cleared, but he found his girlfriend in a horrendous way, then he was under suspicion, I'm not surprised it affected him, its just a shame that he didn't get the help he obviously needed before this happened!!
Plain Talker 13-04-2008, 23:03 I heard that a lot of the young lady's problems , like seizures, etc, were caused by head injuries from a really nasty car smash she had a while back.
It's possible (without having access to the toxicology reports) that she had suffered a seizure and passed out into the scalding hot bath she'd been running. (we don't know how "stoned" she may or may not have been, or how long before her death she had taken/ been in contact with any drugs, or how significant those levels were in her blood)
I'm not condoning drug use, but what I am saying is that we need to see the bigger picture, not just something like "drugs+ body = something sinister"
it's terrible sad, he brought a lot of joy to the kids who loved his TV programmes :(
....and to us Mums.
We hear of celebrities dying all the time and then every so often one hits you really hard. This is one of those times for me
No more BIG PICTURE, little picture. So so sad

*Peaches* 14-04-2008, 07:00 RIP Mark, I hope you are at peace now x
Ousetunes 14-04-2008, 08:46 I had this horrible feeling that as soon as he was reported missing, the final outcome would be a tragedy like this.
A sad, tragic and pointless waste of two young lives.
RIP

You've missed my point entirely, however, this thread is about the tragic loss of 2 lives and NOT the rights and wrongs of drug use so save that for a different thread.
Just heard the news of the fun, spikey haired childrens bbc presenter.
r.i.p m8, you'll be missed in the hearts of many children.
snakebec 14-04-2008, 18:12 has it said how he died yet??? he will be missed by my kids.. they love smart

My daughter said the same , no more big picture / little picture - and had a cry, shes 18 and has grown up watching Mark, he must have been in so much turmoil to do what he did.
And now my 3 year old wonders where SMARTeenies has gone from the Cbeebies website - he used to love to watch Izzy do her thumbprint bit and Mark's pictures again, both big and small
God bless him, and condolences to his family should they ever see this forum, which i doubt, but the sentiments remain,
R.I.P Mark , you made many kids aware of art in all its forms, thankyou for that legacy that you have left behind.
melthebell 14-04-2008, 19:05 Its just been on the local news down here, he hung himself.
i read in the paper today he hung himself on the day he disappeared and was found 6 days later in a part of the station not viewable by the public
R.I.P
This is so sad, cant help but have a cry at it! I was brought up watching him, he taught me everything i know about art. (which granted isnt much but still). he was a lovely man to watch and i cant even begin to imagine what was going through his head to make him what to do that.
RIP Mark, you can sleep now.

Innocence 14-04-2008, 21:57 RIP Mark!
grew up with you inspiring our minds!
its horrible, horrible, horrible this happened to such a fun and entertaining guy!
jowleywowley 14-04-2008, 23:43 I used to love Smart when I was younger. Just the other month me and my friends were having a discussion as to if or not he was gay, I now have an answer to that question.
R.I.P Mark.
p.s- I was wrong about the gay thing
rip mark.
my kids loved watching smart/smatrteenies.
i used to think he was annoying when he bounced around one minuet (big pic) and calm for little pic, the guy was nutty, just how kids presenters should be.
he will be missed.
RyanWalker 15-04-2008, 08:08 R.I.p - shocking news.
Agent Orange 15-04-2008, 09:52 Such a waste of a much talented and funny presenter. A really tragic end to what is a sad story. RIP Mark :(
He was in bits when his fiance died and he must've known his Kids TV career was over cos of the drugs connection, two things he loved most in life, tipped him over the edge. He'll be missed in our house I know that.
