From BBC News online

Actor Stan Richards, who played ex-gamekeeper Seth Armstrong in ITV soap Emmerdale, has died aged 74.
Richards passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday night, said the show's producers.

The actor, who joined Emmerdale more than 25 years ago, was the longest serving soap actor outside Coronation Street.

In 2003 he spent three months in hospital recovering from a collapsed lung.

In 1998 he had to take a rest from the series after breaking a thigh bone.

The actor died at home in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, with members of his family.

He had been suffering from lung problems, including emphysema, for some time and had been in and out of hospital.

Richards' last appearance was on Christmas Eve 2004 after a 15-month absence, sending a Christmas message from Australia to his partner Betty Eagleton, played by Paula Tilbrook.

Emmerdale line producer Tim Fee said: "This is a tragic loss and we are all deeply saddened. Stan will be greatly missed by everyone who has worked with him on Emmerdale during the past 27 years."

The actor was born and brought up in Barnsley. He started out as a pianist and stand-up comedian, then appeared briefly in Coronation Street before joining Emmerdale in 1978 with a plotline lasting a few weeks.

In 2003 he celebrated 25 years on the show. At the time he said: "I have enjoyed every single minute of it. It's been 25 years of fun."

Apparently he'd gone to Australia, that's as much as I know :(

Tra Seth, he was a true Yorkshireman, even down to his flat cap and whippet *cries*

I only read about 2 months ago that he was going to make a comeback on the show via a webcam/video link.

Apparently he always said the programme was his life.

RIP.

Yeah , Seth was one of the few characters left on Emmerdale that gave it its Yorkshire/ Rural feeling. There's a great comedy tradition in Northern life and Seth represented it in Emmerdale. Sadly , now that he's gone , Emmerdale could be set almost anywhere.
If they swapped it round one night with Eastenders or Coronation Street , I don't think many people would notice the difference.

My goodness! I think i am psychic or something.. I was only thinking about Stan Richards on Thursday night, after catching a glimpse of Emmerdale, on the tv, and I had a feeling that something was not quite right... how weird.

Although I am not a fan of soap operas, I did like the humour and warmth Stan Richards brought to the role of Seth Armstrong.

And as for that amazing, magnificent handlebar moustache of his! goodness me! I heard tell it had it's own postcode! (grin)

I wonder if the producers etc will write Seth out with a storyline as touching as the producers of Coronation Street did when "Hilda Ogden" lost her "Stanley"...? (those scenes were probably the best-written, and best interpreted scenes I have ever seen on TV. thetyy were so powerful, and well acted)

It really is a shame, that he's gone.

RIP, Stan,

PT

Stan was a natural. Everything was spot on - no falseness. He acted as he was in life, as was said a true Yorkshireman, no airs and graces. Loveable and how you would imagine a gamekeeper to be, even though, as Seth, he wasn't averse to a little poaching. I'm sure the Dingle family will miss him, as will everyone on the Emmerdale team.
I've just had a recent bereavement of my own, so I've not took a lot of notice who was in and out of the series.

Has one of the King family been replaced by another actor, or is it an estranged son who has entered the program?
Sorry to digress from Stan's obituary.
