Just got back from town via the 76 bus.

On the way in to town (about 14:30) - nothing out of the ordinary.

On the way back (about 16:20) , The bus had to divert due to the police blocking the start of abbeydale road ,and three fire engines could be seen parked up outisde the cremorne pub, plus several squad cars and lots of police. As we detoured round (down London rd up Wolseley Rd, we saw several police vans and at least 12 policemen in riot gear.

Anyone have any idea, knowledge, what is going on?

Cheers.

Well having called the police on 220 20 20, I got through to their "communications department".

After being told firstly they couldn't tell me anything because of "data protection", I was then told that they didn't have any information.

I might just have to wander down and find out for myself.

It occurred to me that it might be match related, but why the fire engines?

Nutter on the roof

The incident was a male wearing a martial art suit (later removed the top half) standing on the roof of a house and throwing tiles and parts of the roof at people and cars below him.

The road was blocked off with several panda cars and one traffic car. There were also fire engines at the scene.

I am not sure why he was up there, but it was very cold and he must have been freezing in just his trousers.

It drew quite a crowd and when I spoke to a couple of local people they seemed considerably upset about the fact that they weren't allowed to pass and get access to their homes.

Sheffield Forum in Action!

Nice work Gpsy. Thanks for that.

Also had a brief conversation with a very helpful PC on the SY police helpdesk.

It seems that there is no mechanism for the general public to even find out even the most general information about an 'incident' at the time it is happening, and only, in writing after the event.

Watching a dozen police in riot gear, 3 fire engines and a big section of road blocked off without knowing the cause, would give anyone cause for worry. Perhaps there is a requirement for a public newsdesk? Although, I grant you, scarce resources might be better devoted - just a thought.

Strange things happen, don't they. By the way, that's actually Abbeydale Road surely?

the Cremorne is on London Rd. London Road runs as far as the Crown Inn at Heeley Bottom and then becomes Chesterfield Rd ...

I know that, but that picture is of Abbeydale Road. It's just after London Road turns off down towards Heeley Bottom.

that is correct, the housing shown in those pics is abbeydale road, near the top of batt street, very close to where the Crown pub was, (now flats)

Do some of you have those police scanners at home ?

Not sure what answers you will get there, Poppins.
While it is not an offence to own a scanner, it is technically illegal in the UK for members of the general public to use them to listen in to the emergency services.

...and thanks for the news & pictures, gpsy.

(this includes emergency services etc.)

Standard scanners won't be able to pick up Police frequencies for much longer though as they are soon to be moving to a totally new system that's in trial in other parts of the country at the moment.

We are able to have police scanners at home , you can listen to police/fire/any emergency thats done over the police radio, sometimes you only get to hear a one sided conversation, but the more elaborate home scanners are used by the criminals in the cars, they can track any police activity in that area.

my husband had one when he was a fire fighter few years back, got a lot of static , but we could hear all the fire calls come in.

A lot of your US Emergency frequencies are relayed online as well. A little google searching will get you some quite quickly.
Some Connecticut ones can be found on ScanCT.com

Thanks, I just googled it, interesting, i think we can also buy them from rRadio Shack too, come to think of it now, they would only be of use to a criminal, rest of US just have them to be nosey buggers, although we haven't had one in years, lost interest.

thanks again

I also got caught up in the diversion.

Isn't it amazing that one person having a 'brainstorm' - or whatever hurling tiles down from a dormer roof dressed in martial arts clothing could be called - would create such havoc.

It was around 6pm-ish by the time I got there and everything, roadblocks etc, were still in place.

Who will pay for all the disruption etc?

Full marks to gpsy for the pics. Isn't that what the Forum is all about?

Yes his pictures are great, anyone know what that thing is on the pavement out side the shop, looks like a second hand shop, looks a bit like a metal bed head thing, interesting though. OR is it part of the police barrier ?

There wasn't any sort of barrier in place by the Police, just a couple of cars either side of the road to stop traffic and a roadblock further down the street.

There were also a couple of officers moving back the odd person that made it past the officers stopping people coming to close to the 'fiddler on the roof', but nothing placed physically down to stop people etc.

It got quite a crowd watching and the person seemed to notice this and swore a couple of times.

Quite an interesting day for bystanders I would say:D
