The new year brings yet more opportunty for SYPTE to rake in even more cash from the long suffering bus passengers of Sheffield by increasing the cost of Travelmaster tickets by 30%. Yes that's 30% (roughly 10 times the level of inflation).

So now we know how they can affors to be so generous to staff with their pension arrangments etc.:(

where was this information published? Is a travel master the same as a zone ticket?

They tell you about it when you go to buy a new one. There are several types of Travelmaster and all have increased by well above inflation. The ones that have gone up 30% are supposed to be a concessionary pass for people on low incomes. What a joke that is. Some concession a 30% rise. They are raking it in at the expense of a captive market whop have no better option.

Zone ticket is a form of trvael master the information as been in the public domain for around 3 weeks , it may have even been discussed on this forum , however, logic says : theyare usualy increased in january and as they were frozen last year there was bound to be one this year. Moral next year buy one in advance before the increase for the scratch cards like I have

If you're annoyed at the cost going up, simply protest by using your travelmaster to catch as many buses as you can, regardless of whether you need to or not. That way the average cost of youe journey will decrease and it'll seem like you;re getting better value for money.

By buying a Travelmaster ticket, are you still saving money on your day-to-day journeys? If no - see if there is something else you can buy that makes it cheaper, or pay day by day.

If yes - stop moaning. Do you moan like this when a tin of beans goes up in your supermarket?

I can go to a different supermarket that sells beans at a lower price. From what company or organisation can I buy an alternative concessionary-fares ticket? Where's the competition that enforces a fair market price?

The Last price increase was 28th May 2006... we had a price freeze ALL 2007.
We still have a few days to buy at OLD rates if you are watching the pennies.

You also have to take into account First are increasing some of their fares and Rail Fares have increased from today. As far as i am aware the PTE is only the Agency for the Travel South Yorkshire Partnership and passes on the money to ALL the public transport providers.

If you are getting a concessionary rate then you are allready enjoying a good discount.

Is Travelmaster the cheapest ticket for you? Alternative tickets are available if you stick to the one operator such as Stagecoach Megariders, First week/month, TM Travel ten trip, TM Travel weekly, National Rail season tickets etc.

The PTE chose not to apply the annual increase last year, so they haven't gone up for two years, so in real terms is only a small increase - and this is against a background of transport operators facing rising fuel prices, rising staff costs, rising insurance costs and rising maintenance costs, plus investment in new and refurbished vehicles. I suspect most of the increased revenue will have to be passed on to the operators to cover costs of providing the service, it's not profit for the PTE!

Then worry about petrol increases, insurance, day to day repairs etc. etc.......
Which ever way you choose it costs you money.... even shoe leather if you walk!!!!

I was surprised the other day when I went into town in the car with 3 others. It would have nearly been cheaper to use the bus, even with 4 of us! (And probably easier too, what with finding a place to park, and the us all wanting to go our own ways).

Ok, my mum had an oldies pass, but that still leave 3 full fare passengers. That would have been £6 in total on the bus, for ticket we could use all day. Parking was £5 for 2-4 hours, (plus the cost of petrol, insurance & tax). We all came home and said we might aswell have used the bus.

The arguments about fuel increases is a non starter, as every time the fuel price goes up, so do the bus fares.

agreed...and I think public transport will all but vanish from Britain within the next decade, leaving only
1)skeleton express National Express and
2)Railway trunk routes..

.the 'local' bus is doomed.....relegated to the Bus Museum for good in next to no time at all......or as tourist excursions only.......

a typical scenario might be...
BROOMHILL, Noon, 2012.....eager sight seers gather to view the arrival of the Number 52 'Crookes' bus....once a familiar sight every 6 minutes back in the early 1980's....this species has been getting rarer and rarer each year, finally going into extinction in 2011 when passengers effectively closed down the route by refusing to pay the £13.50 single fare into town!!! The bus company withdrew the route as unprofitable, and the fleet bus service running as the same number 52 since the 1950's was retired to the bus museums of Yorkshire.....former bus users now own private cars, bikes, or use taxi's...or just foot power.......

Would you care to add something that's actually relevant to my question, since you chose to quote it?

You can choose to buy a single operator pass (eg. Stagecoach only or First only), you can buy a Zone ticket (eg. Sheffield only, Rotherham only), you can buy a rail only ticket or tram only - or you could pay for each journey as you do it (eg. bus fare every bus you get in).

At the end of the day, if by buying a TravelMaster you're still saving money on single fares then you're saving money! Everything increases at some point, as already been pointed out, there was no increase at all throughout 2007.
