BTW - is it just me or do other people have trouble scrolling the pages? I can't use the page up/down buttons or my mouse wheel - it feels SO 2001 to have to pull the mouse over and click every time I want to go down. Those precious milliseconds really add up - not to mention the extra wear and tear on my ligaments :)

[just realised I was being foolish - no problem scrolling now!!!]

Also further minor point - when I click on the smilies they get inserted at the end of the text even if the carat is somewhere else.

Apart from that - great site that enables great people to interact.

Hi,

When you try to chat back, is the etxt you're typing appearing in the box under the main chat window?

If not, click your mouse in that box and try again. Then type your message and press return to send it.

If you can see other chatters, and they can see your nam ein the chat window, then it usually means that most things are working.

I too have the same problem with msn group chat. Everytime I click to enter chat, a notice comes up that it's downloading msn chat software but nothing happens. It says click when you see the smiley face but I just get a white box with a red X.

I think there seems to be an intermittent problem with MSN group chat...I've known of a few people who have had the same problem.

Are you running on XP: if you are, you need to have administrator rights to download "Chat".

Also, the following might help:

To regain access to MSN Chat
1. In Internet Explorer, click "Tools" and then click "Internet Options".
2. In the "Internet Options" dialog box, open the "General" tab, and then
click "Settings".
3. On the "Settings" tab, click "View Objects".
4. In the "Downloaded Program Files" window, select, right-click and delete
all files beginning with "MSN Chat Control". When asked to confirm the deletion,
click "Yes".
5. Close this window, click "OK", and then "OK" again to save these settings.
6. Using Internet Explorer, open your preferred MSN Chat page and join a Chat.
This will trigger a download of the new Chat Control. When asked to accept a
security warning, click "Yes".
You should now be able to use MSN Chat.


If neither of those helps, then I'm afraid you will have to contact msn itself, although you will firstly get the standard reply showing the above information, but if you reply saying that you have already tried it, and that you don't like receiving automated replies, you may get some joy from a "real" person.

Thanks Ann_X, have managed to sort something out but like you said, not before trying all the steps you mentioned but a download was never forthcoming. For the past couple of days I'd been trying various different ways to do this and as yet I've still not had a reply from MSN.
I tried to get into the live chat here, and Java wouldn't load so I followed the link on here to Java and downloaded another version, which enabled me to chat on here.
Then I tried my comm again using MSN chat and it finally came up with the software I needed.
So many thanks indeed to SF chat for solving a lil problem that MSN couldn't. :thumbsup:

I'm not sure that MSN uses Java for it's chat facilities.

I'd have thought it much more likely that MSN uses .NET / C# on the web side of things and C++ / .NET on the client side of things?

The Forum chat room uses Java, though.

One thing to watch with MSN is to ensure that any firewall you're using is configured to allow it to work.

iv got a broblm with the live chatroom

I just clicked on the link for "Join Live Chat", just under Live Chat Info to the left of your screen, you'll see a short message saying please wait but if it doesn't load then there's a link in the message to click and download their Java version.
I followed that, downloaded the software which enabled me to use the chat on here.
Then I tried MSN chat but it used the Java software to download as a netscape version and I saw the smiley face.
Admittedly I didn't know I was using the netscape version :confused: because I'd always been able to get into MSN chat on my groups ok, wondering if it's cos I changed my browser to Mozilla?

Seeing as I am painfully shy and non confrontational by nature, a little bit like some of the large volume posters on here, I was wondering who uses the Sheffield forum chatroom. I keep seeing the numbers in chat and would like to know who these regulars are. It is a shame you cannot view the chatroom users before logging in.
After seeing users posts you get a good idea what there like so you know what to expect, but seeing as I am submissive and weak willed I dont want to have to curl up in a ball and die on my a**e in front of a crowd. ;)

I go into chat two or three evenings a week, just to say hello and we're often dying of boredom just waiting for a new vict .... I mean subject ... The room even says *welcome* when you enter ...

I look into the chat room just to see who's chatting and what there saying, i don't have much interest in in myself.

The young ones type too fast for me to read anyhow.

u will need to install a 'Java Runtime' I expect.
Look around http://java.sun.com for enabling Java in a web browser and find a link to install a JRE (Java Runtime Environment).

if you click the sun logo in the chat bit you go straight to the bit on suns site to download it .........i think

i also advise using firefox to browse the net, i also find it easier and quicker to enable disable java when needed cos it can be a bit dodgy to leave it enabled all the time

Most people are using the chatroom with internet explorer. Try the Java link and post what error messages you get (if any).

I use Firefox for everything except the SF chatroom. It just doesn't seem to get on with Firefox at all.

it seemed to start when there was about 10 of us in the chat room.. it was working as normal, then our messages stopped appearing (as in, we'd press "Send" and it would disappear but not appear in the main window)..

after getting frustrated with that, most ppl logged out, and when we tried logging back in we get a prompt like this:

might have something to do with the new build of Java runtime that was released a couple of days ago.. i only noticed the problems since i updated.. i rolled back to build 04-b05 last night and it all seemed to work fine.. may just be a coincidence, though..

We have had problems before with JRTs.

We'll keep an eye on things, and I have dropped a line to the people who supply the Chat Room service to see if they had any gremlins.

My son posted a thread earlier today as we had a spyware programme that we could'nt remove, with help he managed to do it...now i cant access the forum chatroom (just getting blank screen and small red cross) he tried to download java again thinking it may have gone but it then says we allready have it. Any advice please...:help:

could try un-installing then installing java.

or try accessing the chatroom with a different web browser, FireFox is the best.

also look in your web browser controls, make sure java is enabled

Hi Lizz,

The Chat Room is run on someone else's server, and log files are created that are mailed to Tony and I every night.

We only bother with them when we need to look at complaints, etc.

After 6 months, I destroy my copies of the logs, 'cos they're pretty long!

It does appear to be a chat server issue, so it's a little out of our control at the moment.
