Hiya, found a quite decent G/F flat in Crookesmoor to stay my own but have a little concern about security at night. What is this area like after dark? Any burglar or mug in case?

I often see some policemen to stay in the City Centre, e.g. West Street, at night, but never see any in Broomhill / Crookesmoor.

Please give me some advice.

If your worried about safety this much do you think you should be living on your own??

Im sure you will be fine - Crookesmoor is a really nice area I think. Good luck and dont worry so much:thumbsup:

You'll probably be safer than most of the elderly who also occupy ground floor flats. Something you ought to be aware of though, and I say this out of concern not sarcasm, make sure you close your curtains completely when it goes dark. There are some weird peope out there and a girl on her own in a lit room may be more interesting to some than TV.

Keep windows secure (use limited opening locks if poss), make sure the outer door is closed BEFORE opening your front door, and don't leave any valuables which can be seen through the windows on show when you go out (fit nets if poss).

Most of this applies to males as well as females.

Considering all this Manchau, enjoy your flat:thumbsup:

firstly i wouldn't be keen on living in a ground floor flat, as i would imagine it would be noiser and many people may directly pass your door on their way in and way out, which you may find irritating....

Also from a security pespective ground floor flats will be much easier to break into than 1st or 2nd floor etc. Check the window locks and the window frames, some burglars take the whole pane of glass out before they break in as some window frames make this quite easy to do...

I think historically with it being a very transient area for those who live there Crooksmoor is prey to burglars, as the burglars assume that many people living there and perhaps inexperienced home occupiers and thus may be an easy touch with a high density of valuables per dwelling.

What other areas have u looked at and how close to the uni do you need to be?

Thanks Mat, Saxon and BertieBasset.

I havent yet committed to take that flat but will bear in mind all your advice. I wish to stay alone next year coz my current flatmates really make me realize the trouble of sharing. My preference locations: Broomhill, Crookesmoor, City Centre. But i thought all G/F flats would face the same level of risk, regardless of their location

Thanks a lot.

I lived in a ground floor flat near the botanical gardens for 2 years, which was fine most of the time. It takes a bit of getting used to, but we only had one problem, when someone tried to break in to my room (fortunately I wasn't there). They didn't get in, but I think we were easy prey because our house was old and the windows were all rotten, and the flat was hidden from the road by a huge hedge.
In a ground floor flat you are no more vulnerable than being in a house, and crookesmoor is a nice area. I think as long as you are sensible (such as make sure there are security lights, and some of the other things already suggested like nets and not leaving valuables on display) then you shouldn't have any problems. I don't think Crookesmoor is particularly prey to burglars at all, it is much safer than many other areas.

Crookesmoor is prey to burglars as it is predominantly a student area, ask the police, they liken the arrival of students in September to wildebeast falling prey to lions and tigers....i've got friends in the police who've told me so...

I'm sure they do prey on new students, but I can't imagine Crookesmoor could be any worse than broomhill, commonside, Walkley, Ecclesall road, Crookes or any other student areas, and personally I would be happy to live in any of those areas.

Students houses are just generally easy pickings I suppose, unfortunately. I don't think you should be overly worried manchao, just stick to the advice given and I hope it works out for you.

Well, I lived in a shared house in Crookesmoor and I had the downstairs front room. Never had any trouble and I sometimes miss living around there.

If students are like wildebeast then you'll be fine as long as you're not the weakest in the pack - there's safety in numbers you know! :)

On the plus side of living in a ground floor flat. If you happened to fall out of the window' chances are you'd live.
