I've not found one yet, and I've been looking for them with my Ipod.
Isn't Starbucks supposed to have a free network ?

Starbucks is NOT free its on the t-mobile network.
Free places as i know:

Wig and Pen
The Harley
The Forum
Santury
Cafe Uno

If you sit in a cafe underneith any of the new flats u'll pick up an unsecured network.

Thats from my experience anyway, hope this helps.

isnt that illegal?

I think it is possibly, but by not securing your network for your own use arn't you effectively making it public ?

No it doesn't. recent court cases and at least 3 guilty verdicts in London would suggest its areally bad idea. I know we have all done it when the area was vague but clearly it is now an illegal act.

get yourself to the Scholar (formally the R&R Bar and the Hermitage) at the bottom of London Road, they have free WiFi access plus you can have a few pints.

Right, I've just got a laptop (with Wi-Fi built in). If I take it to somethere that offers wi-fi, I can access the Internet?

Is it really just as simple as connecting to the host and then opening Internet Explorer?

yes, it is, if they haven't put a password on the network.

Yep its simple, Places tend to offer free wi-fi which you can either log on to straight away, or just go up to the till and ask for the password.

Or

You have wi-fi that you have to pay for such as "cloud", "t-mobile" or BT Open-Zone.

Cool.

All I need now is to stumble upon a place that offers free wi-fi. Not that I actually intend to take my laptop anywhere, I only bought it cause I'm getting Sky Broadband soon so will have wireless then!

Just had a look at te Macdonalds web site about the WiFi thing.

On the bottom of the page it says "charges may apply" but it wont say ow much it costs.

Has anyone used it and how much was it?

My OH and I were having brekkers in McDonalds last week and there was someone there with their lappy on the table tapping away. :) Wasn't a town centre branch though, probably a bit safer.

A lot of laptops are cheaper than £1000 but I get your point. I've personally used it in McDonalds when travelling to Sheffield (use NX east coast and get free wifi on there as well)...
