According to the Star a motorist was seen jumping a red light and told to stop. He didn't, and was chased by the car and the copter, and 'was brought to a controlled stop'!

A MOTORIST who went through a red light in the Longley area this morning was chased through the Sheffield suburb by a police car and the force helicopter.
He was spotted jumping the lights by a passing patrol car but failed to stop when officers flagged him down.

The motorist was followed by the police car and tracked from above by the South Yorkshire Police helicopter.

A police spokeswoman said: "There was a brief pursuit after he failed to stop after driving through a red light.

"He was brought to a controlled stop."
there you go story here

I saw the helicopter going over Longley but that was about 2.30am this morning

When I was waiting at the traffic lights junction of Netto & Pheasant pub, a van of police officers with blue light flashing came up Barnsley Road, (NGH - side) turned right onto Hatfield House Lane and sped off somewhere . We then saw a police car come up Jenkin ave with blue lights on, don't know what that was all about probably going to same incident?

Seems quite ironic after just reading the thread about having their cars smashed three times and the police unable to come out doesn't it.

yeah but it will make the crime figures look a bit better-talk about overkill

Overkill, maybe, but if he did'nt run in the first place, it would'nt have happened.

From what I saw, (I was about 25yds away), from the age of him, it looked like he'd been joy-riding. The Police dont handcuff you and throw in the back of a police van for jumping a red light.

Oh, and several Police Volvo's and the Police Subaru were there too, as well as the Helicopter.

If there were 2 helecopters, the other one was probably the BBC filming it for the next chopper coppers series.

Well that explains the enthusiastic Police response then!

Failure to stop usually indicates there is something rather more untoward about car or driver than simply running a red light - hence the 'overkill'.

The car was stopped by a specially trained team from the Road Polcing Group, that target criminals using motor vehicles, obivously more to it than the red light, but clearly that isnt gonna be publisised !

Get a grip !!!!!!!

TWIGLET thankyou for the sensible post (only one on the thread).

DAFTLAD.............good name !!, running red lights doesnt tend to boost crime figures as its a road traffic offence and not a recordable crime, but thanks for the input.

The thought of the BBC flying shotgun.............?????? :loopy:

Well said Wizadoo.

I am personally aware of exactly what happened and the nature of the incident - which obviously I'm not going to discuss here.

Suffice to say 'Daftlad' and others, it doesn't pay to jump to anti-Police conclusions, when you are making assumptions based merely on press releases from that 'reliable' source called 'The Star'

No, they were chased for failure to stop for police, which could be for a variety of reasons, such as a wanted individual, or a boot full of guns, or drugs, or a dead body
