View Full Version : Lost Red Lion pub.
Rocklegend 31-12-2007, 09:06 A few years ago (@2001),I took a detour when driving on the A629 to Huddersfield -due to snow-and went via the M1/M62.I took a right turn towards the M1 and passed a Red Lion on a hill on a bend.I have tried 3 or 4 times to retrace the route but to no avail. If anyone has any idea where the pub is I would be very thankful as it's been driving me mad ever since.(It is not the one at Jacksonbridge).

Gosh!
It's just like "Brigadoon"!
(You didn't see Gene Kelly anywhere en route, did you?!)
I've just asked a van-driver pal of mine, who apparently covers that region and supposedly knows all the back-whacks and the like, and you've stumped him for the minute....

Any idea where you turned off the A629 - there is quite a lot of it between Sheffield and Huddersfield and where did you join the M1.
For instance if you turned at the roundabout above Penistone towards the M1 at Dodworth you could have passed the Red Lion in Silkstone - although from the description (on a hill on a bend) it sounds more like the Nelson at Hoylandswaine - you could have passed the Red Lion a few minutes later and perhaps got them mixed up.

No,it was definitely a Red Lion.I 'collect' them but it was too early to be open. It's not the 1 in Silkstone as I have done that 1.I can't remember where I turned off as I have tried various side roads since but to no avail.
sezemeseeds 31-12-2007, 16:00 oh my god it IS brigadoon. careful if you hear any bagpipes
Rocklegend 31-12-2007, 16:11 Never having seen Brigadoon,I have just looked it up on Wikepaedia.U might be right.....:suspect:

Have you any idea where you turned off the A629 - say within 5 miles?
Rocklegend 31-12-2007, 17:24 Not really-its 6 years ago.I'm sure it was before Penistone....but I could be wrong:confused:
Have you tried the one at Thorpe Hesley, on a hill and at a bend/junction
Rocklegend 15-01-2008, 19:13 Its not that one-its on its own and not in a village.Someone may have solved my problem tho'-finally.I am going out there at the weekend to check it out.Allegedly said Red Lion is on Sheffield road at Hepworth near Holmfirth and is now a restaurant...
there is a red lion in silkstone village just of the A628 near Pot House hamlet. Also there is one on the penistone road from Penistone to Sheffield on the right I'm not sure of the road name.
Rocklegend 16-08-2008, 20:58 Went out to the one I mentioned a couple of months ago and it never was a Red Lion and its not the one at Silkstone-cant place the other one u mentioned tho sahill:confused:
it's the A61 from junction 35 of M1 towards sheffield it's on the right, on that main road. sorry I can't exactly place it.
Rocklegend 17-08-2008, 14:38 U probably mean J36 at Grenoside.The one I can't find is a long way from there-see 1st post.
yes come to think of it, it's grenoside. sorry can't be of more help. hope you find the one you are looking for
Rocklegend 07-12-2008, 18:38 Thought I would just refresh the thread after yet another fruitless journey out there last week:help:I really must find something else to occupy my mind...
naughtyelf 08-12-2008, 22:01 i know of 3 red lions all with in a 10 min drive of each other theres red lion on halifax road near the woods or old red lion in grenoside on main street or if you go past the one on halifax road throu the woods for a while heading towards the motoway there is a jet petrol station and across from it is a pub which iam sure is also called the red lion .
whitehorses 08-12-2008, 22:26 Hiya,
I have just been looking through some threads and came across this one.
You may not know, but on the subject of strange phenomena and strange happenings, I placed a reply to a post probably last year.
My Mum and her friend were driving near where you were and saw a pub, they had already driven past it but since they hadn't noticed it before, and had never been in it, they decided they would eventually turn round and go and see if they could get a drink there and something to eat.Like you, they drove up and down that road several times, and a few times since, and they could never find the pub again, it simply didn't exist. It wasn't a ghostly or old looking place, it had a car park with cars in it and looked perfectly normal, but they never found it again.
I rang my Mum and told her and she is glad you had this experience because nobody ever believed her!Strange isn't it?
This thread got me interested and I have searched and searched all over the place and found a few Red Lions but they all seem to be the wrong side of the motorway, or too far north (or miles and miles out of the way).
I'm guessing its closed down, your memory isn't quite right (and its in a different place) or your 'collection' means you dreamt it! :) :P
I really hope someone can locate the boozer in question.

Had I been alone then I would probably have imagined it but my wife was with me so I'm sure I'm not losing it...I do know that I may have lost my bearings with the route I took but it is certainly in a 10 mile radius of the west of Barnsley-somewhere toward Holmfirth possibly.
Hi
I think the red lion you mean is the one in grenoside on main st just past the old harrow every body calls it the top red because on the bottom rd of grenoside there is another red lion the pub has been closed for a few months now but from what ive heard the lights have been back on again last weekend so fingers crossed it may be re opening !!
Hope this helps pm me if u have any questions :)
Rocklegend 10-12-2008, 17:40 sorry cezzz1 its miles away from there;passed Grenoside many times. Its off the a629 somewhere as my 1st post states.
whitehorses 11-12-2008, 20:14 Did you actually read my post and pm?Perhaps you are afraid to admit that you witnessed something out of the ordinary:suspect:
