Train is direct from Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly. I think it's £17.40 day return or £13 ish day single - it takes about an hour (East Midlands aka Transpennine Express) but there are engineering works over the holidays between Stockport and Piccadilly so you might want to check first at the NR website (above). You can book tickets through www.thetrainline.com or leave plenty of time to buy a ticket at Sheffield station.

They are all quick and cheap, what you moaning about? Look for prices and timetables yourself, couple of clicks and your sorted.

Too many lazy `uns like you on here.

Train is fine, but check the times as there are some railworks.

I have used the train many times and it is usually in Manchester Picadilly within the hour. If it is the centre you need, you may find the train more efficient than the car. Do be careful not to get on the slow train though.

If you go by train, cheap day returns are valid tomorrow as it's classed as an off-peak day, so the day return fare is £13.60. There's a fast (Trans Pennine Express) train about every hour and the journey takes an hour or so. Sample trains: leave Sheffield at 08:05, arrive Manchester Piccadilly 09:08, or leave 09:11 arrive 10:00 Return at, say, 1938, arrive Sheffield 2039. As bus man wrote, avoid the slow (Northern Rail) trains that stop at all the stations on the way. T.P.Express trains are also more comfortable.

The coach is cleaper (£7.70 day return) but there are not many direct coaches and they take longer. There's a direct coach at 09:00 and one back at 18:30 - journey time 1½ hours.

Train probably best bet. Every half hour from Sheffield station to Manchester Piccadilly with a journey of about 55 minutes, bus, tram and taxi connections available at Piccadilly station if you need them.

Less frequent service also available from Meadowhall and Dore to Manchester Piccadilly if thats more convenient.

Buy train ticket at the ticket office or machine before you board, so allow queuing time, if travelling from Sheffield or Meadowhall.

Train times for all trains regardless of what company operates the service can be found at www.nationalrail.co.uk or by phoning 08457 484950.

More details also available on the individual train operators websites: www.tpexpress.co.uk www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk and www.northernrail.org.

I agree with the others train is a good option and I think it is about 13 quid or so. It takes about 50mins to get there. Good luck.

Train is best.

Pretty reliable; I'd say based on daily commuting experience that 1 every 20 trains gets cancelled.
