View Full Version : One of 20th centuries greatest entertainers...
MontyMole 30-12-2007, 15:29 ....died this year and didn't get much of a write up in the tabloids, why?
The one and only "EVEL KNIEVEL"!
Not heard of him then you must be under 30 years of age. Just Google this forgotten superstar. Also there was a great Bio-Graphy Programme of him on the Bio-Graphy Channel a few years ago, I'd love to get hold of that on DVD - any ideas were?
Beakerzoid 30-12-2007, 16:14 Did you see the Richard Hammond Meets Evil Knieval special on BBC just before christmas? It was filmed this summer and was quite upsetting to watch, seeing how the great man was struggling to keep a proud face on in front of the crowds for the annual celebrations in his home town. Watching how Hammond, who idolised him as a kid, was affected by meeting the legend was really emotional.
miniminch 30-12-2007, 17:20 He was kack at bike stunts which was his only job. He wasn't a great man

He was actually damned good at bike stunts - but is remembered more for those daring attempts that went wrong. However he bounced back from all injuries and never let anything stop him from doing what he wanted. If only more of us could stick to our dreams rather than backing down when something goes wrong....
melthebell 30-12-2007, 17:33 he did get a mention on here already tho :P

It's alleged that he abused his wife and kids and beat his canyon jump promoter to within an inch of his life with a baseball bat. Great man indeed, he was just a rowdy redneck in an Elvis suit who often fell off his bike. He did look like an older version of Christopher Walken in his older days though.

There's no way on Earth Ike Turner could look like Christopher Walken Mel.
melthebell 30-12-2007, 20:57 maybe if you squint?

No he was amazing at bike stunts - remember he used Harley Davidsons, these bikes certainly weren't made for stunts.

That was sensationalised crap by the critics and media. The story about him beating his promotor with a bat has some truth in it though, how close to death I'm not sure.
As for beating his wife and kids I'm sure that's crap. Aparently his dad useed to beat him and his wife so "Evel" didn't want to be like his father in that way - although remember they were brought up in a different era from today.

Erm, looking at your response, it seems you are ok with him beating his promoter and that seems acceptable, but to accuse him of beating his wife and kids seems to be a big no no. Surely, violence is not acceptable whichever way you look at it
2007 seems to be the year we lost 2 abuse creatures in the form of Ike Turner and Evel :)

I thought he seemed a bit of a git although I know he was ill at the time.
He just seemed to treat Hammond badly I personally would have told him to pee off.

No, I'm not OK with him beating anybody. With what I've watched and read about the incident, his manager screwed him over. Did his manager deserve a beating for that? No, but unfortunately I'm sure we all can be pushed over the edge and unleash our animal instincts should the wrong button be pushed. After reading books and watching documentaries about him he seems too much of a family guy to have beat his wife and kids - but then again I didn't live in their house. To end it though like I say he was a fantastic entertainer throughout the 1960's and 1970's and it's a pity there isn't yet a great movie tribute too him.
Ike Turner only know who he is/was, don't know much about his life at all except for that crap "Tina Turner" movie that may or may not have been biased, so I won't or cannot comment on him.
NEKRO138 09-01-2008, 00:49 Well I think he was great. R.I.P. Evel.

I second that. At least some of us understand who a real entertainer was :)

What's more entertaining than a man breaking all of his bones jumping over buses? Not much.

MontyMole 15-01-2008, 09:37 Not only was he crap he was thick too.
No, he was a real stuntman. Evel didn't have everything pre-calculated like todays stuntmen he just did plain raw stunts and if it looked like an impossible stunt then he just downed a bottle of Jack Daniels beforehand and still went ahead and did the stunt knowing he was going to break something - but he rather did it that way than let his fans down and lose a pay check.

alchresearch 15-01-2008, 12:44 He was a one-trick pony who had a brief period of fame in the 70's, nothing more.

He was actually famous from the 60's through well into the 70's and maybe early 80's. His fame during the 70's was nearly on a level with Ali and Elvis. Evel's fame certainly wasn't no "fly-by night" unlike todays famous people.
Did you know the Evel Knievel toy was the biggest selling toy of all time. Not sure if that record still stands today but it does show how much he was appreciated in his day before the intellectual, white collar, blue tie brigade began talking down and ridiculing true entertainers who came from and appealed to working classes.
NEKRO138 29-01-2008, 10:06 He was a one-trick pony who had a brief period of fame in the 70's, nothing more.
Yeah but his one trick was very entertaining and took some real balls.
