Hi

I'm moving to Netheredge soon and I want to know what the best locals are for when we don't want to go all the way into town. Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Depends what your after....

The Union is a nice older local
Broadfield - hmmm
Lord Bryon - good for champions league football as will show one match in each side of the bar also £1.60 a pint on tuesdays
One behind Lord bryon - its big but not great
Netheredge Tavern/Hotel - full of loons, good pool table
The Vine - Good nights on, be wary of cask beer their
The Stag - Ok

-----
Depends on where you are but you are also v close to sharrowvale lane and eccy road.... porters cottage et al

The brincliffe oaks is the one we normally go to - 2 pool tables + they normally stay open past closing time. That's the one behind the Byron - or Bryon if you like.

yeah, it's a bit of an old man's pub but they're really chilled. The Bryon sounds a bit Monty Python to me!

The Union is a quality place! When I first went in, I thought it was a bit too old manish for my 25 years, but now I really like it. I now live up at Ranmoor, but at the end of the month will be moving back to Nether Edge and am really looking forward to wine in the Union at 5.30...

So, is the Byron quite friendly then? It;s always looked a bit daunting in the past, and its only at the end of my new rd...

I drink in The Stag, and it used to be a nice little pub, but unfortunately its started trying to be a bit hip, so is going downhill.

The Byron is OK, but not really my cup of tea. I may start watching the football there though.

I usually go in the Nether Edge Tavern to watch football, as they have a big screen with lots of tables. It is particularly busy in there when Man Utd are playing. It does have its share of loons (Like Barry the Scottish leech), but they usually stick to the pool table bit.

The Union is where I will start drinking when I develop a love of bitter and horse brasses. Maybe when I become an up and coming middle class bloke who loves his jumpers and rock climbing.

The Broadfield is quite good, interesting mix of people, and a more lively atmosphere.

The Psalter Tavern is a great student type place, or for business lunch type people.

The Brincliffe Oaks is OK, some may say a slightly chav place... not me of course. Although a few years ago the carpark would be full of Novas.

I go in the Vine quite a lot, and it has 2 pool tables and is excellent for music, has one of the best juke boxes in the City. No pop just class stuff from the last four decades, e.g Hendrix, beastie boys, the streets.
Has an excellent bar area, and a large table which you can sit about 12 around. At weekends they have djs on and a bit of a sound system, which isn't really my cup of tea but is not unpleasent at all. Guinness and lagers are always good, and they do great sarnies too.

I haven't been to the Union/tavern/brinks or byron for a while but the Broadfield is ok, have been in the last fortnight. They have a wide range of ales and two seperated rooms, the right hand side is full of younger louder people and they have pool tables etc. Can get like a bit of a youth club in there.
The Left hand side is quieter, and you can always get a nice table. This pub used to have lots of bands on and In the past I have seen some superb gigs there, but I know the new Manager and she doesn't want any live stuff.

The Vine is a top place.

They had Moonshine on tap last weekend. Superb.

And full marks to the juke box. While I was in, a live version of a song from Love's Forever Changes was played. Never though I'd hear anything like that on a pub juke box!

How long will it be before the developers get their hands on the place and decide to gentrify it? With a brand-new Waitrose just down the hill, it could be argued that The Vine's decor is letting the side down somewhat.

I'm going to say the Union is the best pub in the area purely because as I used to live directly across the road from it the stagger home waas very brief.
I hated the Brincliffe Oaks as that has always seemed to have a lot of younger trendies in it and even when I was young I wassn't a trendy. The Broadfield sells really great food and has a nice atmosphere in the lounge. I seem to remember that some of the small hotels like the Priory and the Montgomery have bars open to non residents.

I'd go for the Union. Serves great food at lunchtime and does a mean pint of Moonshine. Not for them as are looking for a wild night out however.

Indeed, no wild nights. Seems a nice pub, so as soon as my doctor tells me to get complete rest I shall be drinking in there. :)

If you go in the Vine, go on your own and please put on the jukebox Throbbing Gristle's 'Zyklon B Zombie' for me.

I go to the Vine most days but I don't count it as Netheredge. Union is fine, but compared to the others it's miles from the side of Netheredge I live. Never found the Brincliffe chavvy or young trendy at all, more an old men's type place - but it's not exactly somewhere you wuld travel far to get to. Found it more a local pub for local people... we'll have no trouble here

I agree about The Vine, though it's not really Nether Edge, it's handy for stopping off at if you're walking into town that way. It must have one of the finest jukeboxes I've ever heard (though it's a while since I've been but it sounds like it hasn't changed).

In Nether Edge itself the only decent pub is the Broadfield - best to go in the right hand side though. We always pop in when visiting Sheffield as it was my local when I lived on Sheldon Rd amongst other places.

g_spaceman, you're right about the Vine not really being in nether edge it's in sharrow, but it's close enough.
Broadfield isn't in nether edge either, it's Abbeydale.

But it doesn't really matter they're both near enough to Nether Edge to be included, and there aren't any other pubs in Abbeydale or Sharrow, I believe many people think about the Broadfield as part of Nether Edge pubs anyway. And you can easily walk between them all on an evening, they're so close.
