Strange question but does anyone know which fence/hedge you are responsible for looking after. ie. if I'm stood looking out of the back door, is the fence on the left or the right my resposibility. Only asking because one of the fences is falling down and I think it is our neighbours who should pay for it.

Apparently, it's the fence/hedge that's straight on, and the fence/hedge that's to your right.

This applies to the front and back.

I once checked this against the plan I have of my area and it does seem to correlate with the 'T's.

Bugger! That means that those overgrown Leylandii are mine

I'm afraid that it can differ from place to place.
The only way to be sure is to either check with the landlord if you are a tenant or check your deeds if you are an owner.

yes it must differ cos ours is the fence straight on and the fence to the left

I thought generally it was the left (the right if you're facing the street), but you always have to check your deeds because it can vary.

The civilised thing to do is go halves, which is what we did.

If you can have a sensible chat with the adjoining neighbour, you may find that they are more than happy to share costs if they get a say in how it will look.
