Yeah, this is the Phil O'Donnell that played for the Owls in the late 90's. He came with Simon Donnelly & Phil Scot.
I think Danny Wilson signed him. He was a left side midfielder that was plagued by injuries & never settled in the side.
I remember that he came with a good reputation & i think he played for Scotland at some level. He also used to go in my local with the other 2 Scots.
It just shows how fragile life is, 35 years old & physicaly fit & this happens, such a shame!
RIP Phil

Breaking: Former Wednesday midfielder dies during Scottish Premier League match

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Phil O'Donnell has died after collapsing during an SPL match

captain Phil O'Donnell has died after collapsing during the Scottish Premier League match with Dundee.

The 35-year-old, who played 25 times for Sheffield Wednesday in an injury-hit spell between 1999 and 2003, collapsed towards the end of his side's 5-3 win over Dundee and died shortly afterwards.

O'Donnell received five minutes of treatment on the pitch after apparently suffering a seizure before being taken to Wishaw hospital by ambulance.

His nephew and team-mate David Clarkson, who scored twice in the game, was substituted moments later.

Motherwell owner John Boyle saidin an official club statement: "This is an unspeakable tragedy for Phil's family. At this stage we do not know the exact cause of death but the club is obviously liaising with the medical staff at Wishaw General.

"Everyone at Motherwell is shocked to the core and we are sure that everyone involved in Scottish football will feel the same. Phil was not only an inspirational player for Motherwell and club captain, but was an inspirational person.

"All of us at Motherwell are thinking of his wife Eileen and their four children."

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee added: "We are all totally devastated and our thoughts are with Phil's wife and family.

"Phil was a great professional and gave everything when he played the game.

"This is a shocking tragedy."

Apologies if this has been posted anywhere else but I can't find it.

Former Sheffield Wednesday player Phil O' Donnell yesterday collapsed and died during a football match where he was now captain of the team (Motherwell)

To make matters worse his nephew was also playing in the same game but for the opposite team.

Even though I don't get on with Wednesdayites, football as a game comes together at times like this

May he Rest In Peace

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club would like to express sincere condolences to the family of Motherwell captain, Phil O'Donnell, who tragically died after collapsing in his side's 5-3 win over Dundee United on Saturday.

O'Donnell, was at Sheffield Wednesday as a player from 1999 to 2005 having signed from Celtic, having joined the Glasgow club for a £1.75m fee five years earlier. He returned to his first professional club, Motherwell, four years ago on a free transfer.

Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday would like to express our sympathies to those who knew Phil O'Donnell. Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

He was truly revered at Motherwell, having scored his first ever goal for the club in their 1991 Cup win, one of only two in their history.

A whole chapter of Bill Leckie's excellent book "Penthouse and Pavement", is devoted to that success, and the emotions surrounding it.

Thirty five is no age at all, and deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and young family. Hopefully, some of the financial reward from his spell at Hillsborough, will have been wisely invested for their benefit now.

In view of such a prolonged spell of his career dogged by injury, and now his premature death, I start to wonder what sort of effect more than a decade of heavy drug dependancy, might have had on his overall health.

By his own admission he had already been "hydro-cortisoned" out in order to continue playing for Celtic, and his injury record was a long standing joke amongst the Scottish media, who regarded his sickness level, as being second only to that of Rab C Nesbitt.

RIP, Young Man. Sorry you never got the chance to show us what you could really do.

No surprise really but watching the BBC 1pm News was some footage of Phil O'Donnell's funeral and I spotted a wreath amongst the many floral tributes, marked: "From all at Sheffield Wednesday F.C." From the many interested in football and beyond - RIP Phil.
