View Full Version : What Birthdays Made You Feel Old

I've recently heard lots of people saying "When I got to my Nth birthday I fel really old" or sowrds to that effect.

This has variously been 21,24,25,30, 31, 35, 40 etc etc.

It's my 28th on Monday (all donations gratefully received!) and it doesn't really seem in prospect that much different to 27 (in fact I sometimes feel like I'm mid thirties)

The only birthday I've ever felt significantly older was my 20th.

Just wondering what ages this hits other people.

25 :(

This is because I'm no longer 18-24 on forms and surveys, but 25-35. So basically, I've hit 25 and I may as well be 10 years older.

No wonder I don't go out much any more and am always grumbling.

My 25th was one I was dreading as I looked at it as halfway to 50 (no bad thing it's just I'm vain beyond belief and can't deal with looking older!) - this wasn't helped by people buying me werthers originals and old man related items.

22 and 26 really hit me, but nothing like when I turned 30 last year! I got to worrying about it in August (three months before!)

I was complaining to my then manager about it, and she gave me a fab piece of advice; "Don't worry about your thirties; it's the time when you make all the right decisions"

So far so good; I've made some quite wise choices so far!

I'm 27 next (March).
I think I'll start to feel that my life is slipping away at a fast rate when I hit the 35 mark.

You always think when you're younger and growing up that it will never happn to you or that it's years and years (an eternity away) that you'll reach 24, 27, 35,40, 50 etc.

Now I just think, it wont be long before I'm _ _ yrs old (fill in the blanks).

Is it just me or does your life seem to FLY by when you hit your mid 20's?

Yes, it does, which is good because the weekends come round quicker. I'm 35 now but I'm not that bothered about it, I always hoped I would be where I am now when I was younger, so I have no complaints.

I've just turned 25, but I've never had a birthday where I felt particularly old. I guess I first felt old when my first child was born, then when she started school, when I bought my first house, that kind of thing.

Chronological age doesn't bother me, but life events have much more meaning, somehow.

20 depressed me - it's sort of a landmark age - 2 decades on this earth and what have I done so far sort of thing!

30 however is fab - you are no longer a hip young thing (not that I ever was!) and no longer have to pay attention to the vagueries of fashion et al (not that I ever did!) 'cos you are now officially past it!

Think of it as people will not treat you like a kid anymore.

I've always found the x9 birthday a bit depressing, but when I've got to a new decade, all depression lifted completely.

However I feel this kind of thing is worse if you are younger
e.g. 19 worse than 29. But to be honest as I gradually get more decrepit, I find that It's not something I care about at all.

Bladesgirl
I'm sure that you will find being 20 to be fantastic. I did.

As you get into adulthood, people take you more and more seriously, and this makes your life easier and less stressful and more fun. Think about why teenagers are moody all the time, aside from their hormones, it's because they are not allowed to do anything that they really want to do.

Well I am the same age as he, and this is quite a warming piece of advice.

Even if it does mean `now you are old and responsible` :(

The 27th...

* In all forms I have to fill in... 25-35 group :(
* ...close to 30 which is scary :o
* Most athlets' peak age is 27 yo, (i.e. footballers), from that age forwards the physical decline starts.... less strength less stamina etc

How about cricketers.
They are at their most effective in their 30s. Alex stewart was the best wicket keeper for england, in the best team for a decade, at 40.
I understood that race cyclists are at their peak 33-35.

I've not really found any of my birthdays depressing so far, in fact my next birthday (24) is the first one thats ever really bothered me. I think its because the last birthday I remember really well was 21, the others after that were lost in a haze of exams, final year projects, work etc and it seems a bit odd that 'suddenly' I'm 24. At least this year will be memorable - I'll be at a Sunday Dev Cat meet

It does, and it gets faster and faster.

Simple explanation. When you are one year old, 6 months is half a lifetime. When you are 50, 6 months is actually only 1% of your lifetime.

I used to look up and say "Good grief , lunchtime already?"

Now I look up and say "Good grief, are we in 2005 already?"

None of them have made me feel old so far. I have a feeling I'll feel different at my next birthday (30) but I've thought that about previous birthdays and it's never happened. So far my most favourite age has been 27, don't know why but I just enjoyed it alot and had a good year.

I don't particularly feel old at 29, I don't look old so as long as I keep up the exercise (need to get back into it) then I don't think I'll ever really feel old.

My dad is always going on about him being 'an old man now' and he's 56. Please!!! I think it's just his excuse to get out of doing things around the house.

Edit: I also really enjoyed being 20. First year in college away from home and working in a bar in Blackpool over the Summer. Great fun. :D

I have a theory about percieved time, being how the time accelerates as you get older.
When you are 33 half your percieved life is over. This is why really old people find life a bit of a blur. And little children are always bored. I thought quite deeply about this about 5 years before I met a friend's brother who had already actually written his PHD thesis on this very subject. We talked about it and had exactly the same ideas, and he had found lots of published research and experimentation which adds lots of weight to the idea.

When I hit thirty I realised that in 30 years I had got no where in life, I also realised that I couldnt act like a kid any more and that it is up to me to make somthing of my life, and so I now have a plan, and by the time I am forty I hope I will be in a better situation than I was when I hit thirty.

I think 30 is the age you hit and realise that its a one way trip and you dont get any younger.

Non of my birthdays have bothered me, I was told when I was in my teens that I would probably be dead by the time I was thirty, I am now 54 and if the doctor who said it is reading this all I can say to you is You little liar :D So it's all a bonus, I intend to be the first forum member to live to be a hundred, although I am way down the queue ;) No names mentioned ;)

I've been thinking about this recently. I was thinking that as a child you are learning more than ever so time seems to pass slowly as you are absorbing so much new information and experiences. As you age your learning decelerates and time seems to pass more quickly.

just an idea, probably completely wrong.

I wouldn't worry Jon. I personally look at it like my years from 0 to 30 were for growing up, maturing and experimenting with what I was going to do with my life. Now I'm nearer 30 I've made mistakes along the way, changed my career, lived abroad a little and at 30 I'll hopefully be ready to actually make something of my life thanks to my 30 years of life-training. :)

I'm sure there's a very good chance I'll be making the same excuse in 10 years time when 40 is approaching. Hehe! :)

Hey come on guys... What's in a number after all... that is what age is... we were all born with the number 0 which just happens to keep growing higher an higher as the years go by...

Why should we be feeling older... just because our number gets higher as each year passes... dont get me wrong i dont mean we should still be feeling 0... :hihi:

I mean... why do we have to grow with our number... surely we're allowed to slack a little...

I'll be 34 next month (dont feel it)... ok i'm lucky i dont look my age... dont even act it either half the time... but how is a 34 year old ment to feel? does anyone really know the answer...

I can honestly say Birthdays have never really bothered me other than the lack of pressies as you get older

Turning 30 was no big deal for me... yet to my friends it was a huge... one of them wanted to stay in bed all day an not celebrate... whats that all about!? I celebrated with a brilliant party... I hope i shall be doing the same for my 40th 50th 60th etc... any excuse for a party :partyhat:

My best years would have to have been when i was 18/19 they were cool for me... :)

Enjoy life... dont let it pass you by...

I feel it is things that we go through in life that makes grow up quicker than others... (My Mum told me i put years on her :o (as if lol)

ie: My sister married an older man... she matured very quickly an sometimes even now acts older than her real age... she's only 36 an thinks she can act like she's my Mum :nono:

Also young Mothers... (no disrespect) i feel they tend to grow up fast due to responsiblities they have etc...

Me!? well i never intend on growing up :) :P

I was dreading turning 30 (don't really know why) so from the day I was 29 I was depressed because I knew the next one was the big 30.

Then, they day I was 30 I've never been happier - there's nothing else I dread!

I just try and make every day count and laugh a lot (and talk a lot)! lol

On this thread I suspect I'm in the top five as far as older age is concerned. All you young whipper snappers listen up, I'm in my forties physically and yet in my head I'm still in my twenties, I don't feel as though I'm old as I know loads of people who are really old in comparison to me.
So birthdays don't worry me in the least, what was slightly alarming was when I was teasing a lass in a shop and I discovered I used to go to school with her mother. I also had a girlfriend who was a grandmother and had been when i met her for four years. I suppose also going out with a student teacher as when I was at school we used to think the student teachers were so old.
Watch out though the major down side of getting older is bits do begin to 'malfunction' and you start sighing in contentment ehen you sit down and groaning when you have to lever yourself out of the armchair.
