View Full Version : Late Night Fry Ups In Sheffield
Tazz070299 10-02-2005, 23:28 Can anyone remember the name of the Portakabin transport type cafe, in the '70s. It was down past the Wicker (Saville Street?) and used to serve Bacon and Egg in the early hours of the morning.
I remember going there at 2.30 on Friday mornings after a night in town at the clubs, and having baconegg and tomato sandwiches with a big mug of tea. It set you up well for work on the Friday.
The name Vera's comes to mind, but I can't swear that it's right.

You're talking about Greasy Vera's. My Mom was a policewoman at the time, and she used to get free sandwiches while on nights. Aparrently it wasn't just her, Vera was glad of any police presence!

RiffRaff 11-02-2005, 18:04 I thought it was "Dirty Beryl's" !
No, it was Mucky Mary's :P
In my 'clubbing' days during the 70's we all used to end up at Neepsend Nora's - this was an old lorry which had been converted into a burger bar.
It was sited on some spare land down at the bottom of Corporation Street and Mowbray Street.
At 2:00 in the morninig it had a real mixture of clientele - all the disco kids - taxi drivers - coppers - and the odd Merc, BMW, etc cus it was the 'cool thing' to do
Huge Sausage and Tomato breadcake - mug of Hot Chocolate - then taxi home, happy days..
could have been gg,s ,........just left of norfolk bridge

GG's was the cleanest and best :)
bluesdudeo 13-12-2007, 21:23 Many people called it " Vera's" but in fact Vera only worked there. I had many a drunken sandwich or 3 there around 2:30 am with my posse Martin Manterfield, Colin Gunstone, Graham Beechall, Pete Flynn ...Clive er? sorry mate can't remember your name ... The owner once heard me call the Van "Vera's" and pulled me up about it saying ...this is my van not Vera's it's my Van ( can't remember her name) ...but we all still called it Vera's . It will always be Vera's van as far as I'm concerned
surfinjim 13-12-2007, 23:30 We always referred to it as Greasey Vera's as well. Like a luton transit van but painted a nice shade of Tank green.
Always used to like the barbed wire on the roof!

bluesdudeo 13-12-2007, 23:39 LOL i don't recall the barbed wire roof but it was a ropey old van. I used to set off for Vera's on many nights from the Crazy daisy night club but I didn't always find it due to my head and my legs having an argument. I spent a few hours wandering the black streets looking for a "cheg burger with out the egg" ... she always said "why dont you just order a cheese burger". I guess cheg burger without the egg just sounded better.
Thanks again m8. David

Yes we used to get sandwiches from there when we were on night at woodheads.

Andy the dj 19-01-2008, 17:34 Sorry don't remember that far back,it was owen by a guy,a oldish guy with grey hair and a tash very clean and smart a real gent always polite. He finaly retired a couple of years back and retired to Skeggy (I thinK) with his disabled wife.
opening at 11pm till 4.30am everyday apart from Thursdays must have taken its toll. He sold the business to a young couple forget their names but sempt to be doing all right customer wise, the "Cheg burgers" were still ok thats all that mattered. Then all of a sudden it closed, now even the 1950s ambalance (which was converted in to the takerway van)has gone.
Reesh2052 20-01-2008, 06:53 The van is or was still parked up there a few weeks ago, it's above the hand car wash. We used to go alot in the late 70's and early 80's when l was part of a Biker gang. I also remember having to visit it a few times after being let out of Bridge Street early without breakfast.
I can't remember what the food was like, but l bet it was great at the time!

The MM special was a 'fat dip.' Martin used to scoff one down in record time while waiting for his cheggburger. Must admit, had a few of those myself.
By the way, remember it was Ruth who used to help out Vera.
