After reading Goldenfleece's review of Stannington pubs, just thought I'd round up a few choice areas where there is a pub crawl (either walkable or linked by a bus service) of reasonable pubs that serve cask conditioned real ale on handpump....

Attercliffe & Handsworth: Carlton, Cocked Hat, New Crown (bus 52)

Dore, Totley and Bradway: Devonshire Arms, Hare & Hounds, Crown Inn, Cricket Inn, Cross Scythes, Fleur de Lys, Shepley Spitfire, Old Mother Redcap, Castle Inn, White Swan, White Hart (bus M17)

Dronfield and Dronfield Woodhouse: Coach & Horses, Greyhound, Bridge Inn, Old Sidings, White Swan, Green Dragon, Blue Stoops, Victoria, Talbot Arms, Miners Arms, Jolly Farmer. (bus 43)

Woodseats and Heeley: Chantry, Woodseats Palace, White Lion, Red Lion*, Sheaf View, Shakespeare.
* OK, Red Lion not yet open but looks promising if it delivers as advertised.

Chapeltown and Burncross: Commercial Inn, Wharncliffe Arms, Prince of Wales, Norfolk Arms, Acorn (bus 66)

Ranmoor and Nether Green: Ranmoor Inn, Bulls Head, Fulwood Inn, Rising Sun (bus 40/120)

Kelham Island, Shalesmoor and Hillsborough: Harlequin, Riverside, Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, Milestone, Ship, Shakespeare, Wellington, Moon, George IV, Hillsborough Hotel, Rawson Spring, New Barrack Tavern

Why stop at the suburbs? You could also get a train out to Elsecar (my neck of the woods) and, in the space of the 10 minute walk down the hill to the Heritage Centre, visit 4 excellent real ale pubs.
Go during the day and you could walk on to Wentworth and Harley and visit 3 more fine real ale pubs.... ;)

The Norfolk Arms is up at Warren, where you also have the Miners Arms and the Thorncliffe. The Thorncliffe used to do real ale, not sure now as its recently had new management.

Not sure what the Acorn stocks real ale wise, and even the Wharncliffe was smooth flow stuff only the last time I managed to get in.

Anyone have suggestions for a real ale pub crawl in the city itself? I have some mates coming up from London and want to show 'em around the city of Sheffield.

There are so many pubs doing real ale in town now its hard to choose one. This is one of my favourite excursions...I always meanto get further than this but it never seems to quite happen.....

start in the Dove and Rainbow (well I usually do!!), and then a brisk walk up High Street, Barkers Pool, Division Street to the FROG AND PARROT. They usually have some decent ales on, although sometimes they can have only one available it depends how busy they have been. Great little pub, been drinking in there since it opened its doors back in 1982.

Usually after that will ramble over to the Devonshire Cat, a real top range of cask ales....and this is the problem....Once there I tend not to get any further as they have so many ales on.....:) A short crawl but a very merry one:hihi:

Not to forget the Stannington Pub crawl... Starting at the Holly Bush, then go up Hollins Lane, and then further up the hill to the Sportsman, followed by the Peacock, then Minnie's (Rose and Crown) then the top House (Crown and Glove).

If you've got any money left and are sober enough after those, go down to the Anvil on Stannington Road, and then the Robin Hood at Little Matlock.
