Last night decided to do a Stannington (village end) area pub crawl and was very disappointed indeed, with ONE exception. First of all, we tried the Sportsman, and that was promising when we walked in, right hand side room was quiet and we were greeted by the Landlady, something that does not happen very often these days! Trouble was, NO CASK ALE........best bitter on offer was only Tetley smooth and that I cannot abide. So I was most upset not to have a choice of cask ales, as they used to have a few on here in the past. The left hand room was full of chavs in trackie bottoms, baseball caps, and a few plebs hanging around in the car park revving up a Saburu.......not really improved much since 2 years ago when I last went in....

We tried the Peacock next, normally having 3 cask ales online here, but shock horror, NOTHING.....all pumps were bare, not even a backward pump clip. It was a desert of lager and smooth flow bitter. I hate 'smooth flow' so had to leave that one and try the Rose and Crown a minutes walk away. Good atmosphere in there despite the ominous big screen soccer, but the bar was a sea of huge lager fonts, and guess what....NO CASK ALE. The barman seemed to have difficulty understanding I was asking about cask ales, and just shook his head and offered me a choice of huge bar fonts full of bland lagers.....we declined.....the soccer was doing my head in so we just left...

Hare and Hounds was shut and sold off for development, so we tried Crown and Glove, and heaven be praised, ONE cask ale, being STONES handpull, which was so good I drank 4 pints of it. In fact getting that one on at the Dove as not had it before anbd it was delicious. Lovely old worlde pub, full of old people but very friendly locals and no chavs at all..

Finally the Rivelin, and a big improvement there, as the Black Sheep cask was spot on and very drinkable. So the last 2 pubs saved the day......

Did you get to the Anvil - that's wasn't a bad pub last time I went in.

Failing that I would suggest jumping on the Rural-Link bus to Bradfield - the Plough has beers from the local Bradfield Brewery and the Old Horns has Thwaites beers on.

The Anvil and the Robin Hood are probably the best 2 pubs in the area for cask ales.

Yep, the pubs in Stannington are terrible. I rarerely go in the pubs in the village and my parents have constantly said how they have gone downhill here in comparison to other places.

Yep, the pubs in Stannington are terrible. I rarerely go in the pubs in the village and my parents have constantly said how they have gone downhill here in comparison to other places.Nothing wrong with the pubs themselves! but they are like restaurants etc. they need good professional management and staff to run them, and it's true Stannington is suffering from a lack of that at the moment................not helped of course by some of the braindead customers!!.........Uhh! tha what! f...in .ell. What is it, about Sheffield 6?...the Pubs deserve the customers, and the customers deserve the pubs! I suppose.
