Went out on 21 dec for girls afternoon/night out. was so very busy in town. anyway. having great time and then about 7.15 we went to the Reflex bar. They were charging £3.00 to get in. we were outraged, specially since 2 of our friends went in 10 minutes before and didn't have to pay. we told them to stick it. since when does a pub charge at that time to get it. went to pub next door and they were charging a pound to get in. asked if they were charging the week before and the bouncer said no just tonight. we told them to stick it too. cheeky little ***** charging to get in. plenty pubs in town not charging. how unfair of them to charge and to get away with it.

fair enough at the end of the night but not as early as they did. half ten - eleven you can understand. can not believe they allowed to get away with it.

I think pubs charging on the door is a joke......we make more than enough money as it is, most are just greedy......Dove and Rainbow not charging New Years Eve, unlike most City centre venues......

I think that pubs charging on the door or tickets should be outlawed. They do it at my local and all it means is that most of the locals do not get a chance, and the landlord's mates all get in. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth and was never neccesary in the past.

How can a pub be classed as a PUBLIC house if the public is barred from entering without a prearranged ticket or fee on the door ?

And what do you get extra on New Years Eve for the money ?

Usually nothing.

Yor forgot - You get crammed in like sardines in order to maximise the tight landlords pocket door money. ;)

If it's really packed, at least you get to grope young ladies without them knowing who's doing it. That's got to be worth a fiver of anyone's money.

It is just a con to make people stay in the venue for the whole night, rather than moving on to another one when they get bored.

Didn’t it all start with the millennium celebrations, I think that was the first time pubs charged and they have been doing it every year since.

Flares charges after a certain time but thats all the time not just on a really really really busy time of the year!! When we told them to get lost we weren't paying to get in we just left, but bet some people refused to pay and gave a lot of grief to the door staff. is that really worth it. Pubs like Dove and Rainbow should be given custom not those who are greedily out to make more money out of the customers.

I work 70 hours a week running a pub for the good of my health! I think we should give booze away too on all Holidays ;)

There are many different businesses that put up prices at certain times of the year it is not just pubs!

Well I think its a disgrace.......

Hence why I refuse to pay, vote with my feet.

If it is a nightclub thats understandable, but pubs ...... ya having a laugh

Save money on New Year's Eve by only paying for one of your party to go in and getting him to pass you your drinks outside through the window in the Gents'......

Why are you lot complaining about paying. If a pub is offering a good and unique service then to charge is entirely up to them. If Flares is so bad that you can not afford to pay £3 once in a while then dont go. Seems like people get to used to the word FREE. DJs do not work for free and neither do staff or management. A bit of thought and common sense would suggest anyone paying to go to a venue is getting a service worth while or else it must be crap. Incidently Flares is cheese crap so for them to charge people is quite hilarious.

We are talking reflex here, not exactly a classy pub.

So do you agree paying £3 to Reflex at 7:15 is acceptable ?

have you actually read this thread. no one has said flares is bad. a venue you pay for yes but a pub that does not charge entrance fee any other night just the one busy one at xmas when all offices break up and therefore mega busy is a disgrace, that is what we are discussing. read the thread:rant:

Nobody is suggesting you give drinks away but surely you can see regulars being aggrieved at paying to use a pub they have been frequenting the rest of the year.

A town centre pub might get away with it but I don’t know how I local landlord can charge local punters, something’s wrong.

You can also avoid the charge by going in the pub and getting drunk on December 30th and hiding in the toilets all night and throughout the following day.

There's always a way around it if you think laterally......;)

You can get that anywhere that's crowded enough. Last time it was downstairs in the Nelson.

When we went to the pub opposite (next door), can't remember name and found they were chargeing we went to back door where people were coming out to have a smoke, tried to get in that way but there was a bouncer on the door and if you had no stamp on your hand he would not let you in, had to go round the front, I asked him why and he said "cos you have to" when pressed as to why could not go in that entrance as just same as other door he repeated "cos you have to". the pub was obviously takin no chances of anyone doing the unthinkable and getting in without paying! me and my friends were outraged by these two pubs but after meeting other people in town that night, there were other pubs trying the same thing!!!!:rant:

Getting in without paying then spending money over the bar - unthinkable.

if a pub is putting on a special DJ or live music event then to an extent they CAN justify a door fee. DJ's are not cheap (well not the decent ones), but my point is MOST pubs do nothing different at all, except maybe a bowl or 2 of nuts on the bar and the odd Mince pie. It simply is greed.....we bars make lots of money all year round and to rip our customers off on one of the key nights of the year is an INSULT! Most pubs will have their busiest night of the year and take thousands over the bar that night and can well afford to pay DJ's, etc.

IT MAKES ME MAD!!!!

I just go in the ones that dont charge, but will pay after 10pm. It is quite annoying when it is not for a special event or DJ etc. I can afford it but if its just a racket i wont pay. Similarly that place Bungalows and Bears seems to have some kind of membership judging by me being turned away Saturdays. I then return the favour when they are empty (in the week).

Im not charging anyway.......we have a private party booked......though if i were going to charge it would only be for non-regulars, anyone that spends money here year round I wouldn't expect to pay.

Think it is totally shocking is a public house not a club should boycott the pubs for a weekend or 2 and then see what happens.
