Hi, I was thinking of organising a post christmas photography stroll around Sheffield General Cemetery on Saturday 5th January 2008, starting at 11am (weather permitting!). We can also take in either the Botanical Gardens or Bingham Park and Whitely Woods, depending where people would like to go.
To see what photographic opportunities there are, click on this link http://www.gencem.org/explore/index.html and a map of the Botanical Gardens here http://www.sbg.org.uk/images/information/SBGlayout.pdf
As you can see there are lots of potential for budding photographers.
Let me know if you are interested. We can change the date to suit the majority if necessary.

Sounds good - let's hope it isn't ******* down like the last one...

Thats why I've added 'weather permitting'!:hihi:
Hope you can make it - will be good to meet you:)

Sounds interesting and a good opportunity to test out my new Canon 400d :D However, I don't have a memory card for it and don't know if it'll come in time, and on the day, I'd probably prefer to stay in bed! We'll see....

Yay! Hopefully will be warm enough for the friendly little tree rats to come out and pose for us :)

No idea where the cemetry is you mention though. Of course it all depens on my ability to get out of bed on a Saturday...notoriously tricky. I'm sure my bed/duvet has some invisible arms that cling on to me! :hihi:

You'll want more than one memory card in the long run.... pick one up at a local shop on the way ;)

If you have ordered one online you should have it by then anyway I would hope.

I've ordered a 2gb one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007QU70U) off Amazon yesterday, after traipsing round Meadowhall trying to find one just as cheap (how on earth can they charge £50 when they're available for £15 online.....). But I'm intending to pop to Asda in a bit, when the Canon cashback website finally loads and I can print off the form, and see what they've got to offer seeing as they have them cheap online. Can't wait to start playing with it and get used to it all!

I've just got a new canon as well gemma86 - I know what you mean about wanting to get out & use it - I'm the same!!

Coming along on the walk with us will give you lots of opportunities to use your new camera & be in the company of like-minded enthuiasts! Hope you can make it!

Just had an email to say they've dispatched the memory card now so fingers crossed it'll be here very soon :D

Hi Hemlock, pippo and me will be turning out for this .. weather permitting :D
I came across some decent photos taken in the Sheffield General Cemetery, on this site Decadence (http://www.decadence.me.uk/pages/graveyards/sheffield_general.htm), it looks a very interesting place.
Pippo and me are looking forward to meeting you all, and maybe seeing a bit of sun .. hopefully !

Just for a change I believe I'm going to be in Sheffield that weekend so, weather and duvet and (whatever other excuses I can think of at the time) permitting, I'm in!

Where are we meeting? The entrance on Cemetery Avenue - off Ecclesall Road? And do we need to bring holy water and wooden stakes?

Hi everyone, sorry I havn't posted for a while - been away over new year.

we will be meeting at 11am at the entrance on Cemetary Ave - off Ecclesall road - Weather permitting!!
Thanks P&M for finding a link to those photos - they are really inspiring!

So, come on folks, plenty to take photos of - both in the cemetery & in the Botanical gardens, come & join us!

Let me know if you intend to come, so we know how many to wait for. Look forward to meeting you all!

a. See previous post about my clingy quilt
b. I can find you on the day :)

Right now, 90% I'll be there

I'm still undecided... I want to come but would like someone I already know to come with me and no one I know can make it or would be interested! Also, my memory card still hasn't turned up :(

DaFoot
03-01-2008, 06:40
G86 - I haven't actually met any of this lot yet I don't think (apologies to anyone I have actually met!). Don't worry - we can be lost puppies together!

What sort of memory card does your camera take? I have 2 2Gb CF cards, you can borrow one if yours hasn't turned up, your camera takes CF cards and you make it along to the walk :)

ImpInaBox

Gemma86 - the 400D takes Compact Flash cards - probably the most common format around so I exepct plenty of people will have the odd spare card floating around - I've got a few from 512MB to 2GB. I've not met anybody here in the flesh either but I'm looking forward to doing so - they sound like a good bunch - at least nobody has mentioned axes and stary eyes - so far! :D

Hi G86, :)
you can always do what I intended to do when I first plucked up the courage to go for a walk with the walkers group - go to the meeting point - if you don't like the look of the ugly mob stood there - just walk away! No-one has seen you before & as long as you're not wearing 1/2 a dozen cameras, we'd be none the wiser!!

I did join the walking group for a walk by the way, & I've never looked back - they're a great bunch of people. I've only met Pippo & me before, (from the walking group) so it'll be new for me as well!
I'm looking forward to meeting all these other great photographers & getting some great tips & inspiration.

Dafoot - you've got to detach yourself from your douvet - I'm looking forward to seeing the face behind the wonderful animal photos - the one's I'm useless at!! So we'll see you there won't we??!!? :D

Imp in a box - I hope you're as pretty/handsome as you are in your avater!! :hihi:

Wojtekk - It'd be great if you could come & joined us - see you there?

I can vouch for Pippo looking as rugged as he does in his avatar!!

See you all at 11am.

Anyone else game?

Batteries charged, memory cards found...let's just hope weather holds off for us.

Was a bit misty on the motorway tonight - that could work nicely in the graveyard....though I really don't want to be lugging my tripod about with me - could be essential in those conditions :(

Is there any parking nearby? If so I could bring it but put back in car as we stroll off elsewhere.

EDIT:
PArking info here...

Hi Dafoot - you could always go to the entrance on Cemetery road - parking a bit easier round there - & walk down through the cemetery to meet us - weather permitting.

I will be there tommorrow, whatever the weather so anyone who wants to come or is undecided if its raining, they won't be alone!

Look forward to seeing you all tommorrow!

Hi everyone & thanks to all those who were able to fight off those brutal duvets that pin us to our beds!

What a great bunch of people! - gemma86 - I can guarantee not one of them was an axe murderer & we all survived to see another day!

The brave ones amongst us that came along were:-

dafoot
hockeybear
hemlock
mr hemlock
imp in a box
mrs imp in a box
wojtekk
pippo & me

We strolled round the cemetery for an hour or so & then went to Starbucks for a drink. Once we'd warmed up we then strolled along to the Botanical Gardens.

The weather, apart from a little chilly was brilliant - no rain!

It was great talking 'shop' with everyone & getting loads of tips & help trying to shoot things I usually shy away from. Anyway, here is a link to my photos, although I feel a little intimidated by all the professionals amongst you! I think I was the only one (apart from Pippo & me) with a megre point & shoot.

http://picasaweb.google.com/paulinezel/PhotographyStroll5108

Dafoot - I even managed to get photos of rabbits, birds, squirrels ... hope you like them :hihi:

The orchid picture is all thanks to Dafoot - wouldn't have managed it without his advice. Also, he inspired me to take the photos of the red planty things that I may not have taken otherwise - a change from my usual walls etc!!

So, everyone, it was well worth the effort to come along.

Imp in a box - I can't wait to see the group 'hug' in the bear pit!

mrs imp in a box - Really interested to see how your fountain photos come out (haven't posted mine as I may be embarassed when i see yours!)

Pippo & Me - don't you dare post that photo of me through the window!!

Wojtekk - hope you feel better soon

Hockeybear - glad you managed to find us after being at work since 6:30 - what commitment to photography! Looking forward to seeing your photos!

Me and pippo enjoyed the photography walkabout, and it was pleasure to meet all who participated,
and many thanks to Hemlock for organizing the walk.
Not sure what Hemlock's on about .. but It's something to do with taking photos through windows I think .. ?
I was surprised to see the large display of plants growing in the glass houses at the Botanical Gardens.
Especially the Conium maculatum (http://www.sheffieldphotos.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3694) and is that a pedi-sdauno sprouting near by? :hihi:

I just bought a DSLR and am eager to try it out but am used to the point and shoot type of photography so it will be a learning exercise for me.

Hope to join in the next photography stroll.

Liking those where you played with b&w / sepia conversions. I can think of a couple of mine that would work for, I'll have a bash at 'em again at some point. Ones that I have put up so far were with no/minimal tweaking just to get something online.

Oops - thanks for pointing that out. Here's the real link - Cemetery Walk (http://www.impinabox.co.uk/gallery-cemetery.php).

I guess that's what comes of being lazy and just doing a copy & paste from the wrong browser tab!

EDIT:
Just been looking around everyone else's pics - hey - we're quite prolific - esp Hemlock! I like the b&w and sepia treatments, not so sure about the colour/mono fades - tho one, a jumble of headstones on one side and ivy on the other, works well - looks like a trip back thru time.

Anyway - great to meet everyone and looking forward to the next walk.

Hello all, I've only just spotted this thread, I don't come here often as my camera is in bed having a long snooze. I have been involved in the cemetery for some time and if I'd known about the walk I could have come along and told you about it. I did a tour for the walking group once. I've seen many photos of the cemetery over the years, and taken some myself, and I am really impressed at some of the shots you've caught. If you liked it here, it's worth a trip back in Spring and Autumn too. As you can imagine, the changing seasons have a dramatic effect on the place and there are some really wonderful plants and trees that are as asleep as my camera at the moment. Maybe if you do another walk I'll make it next time, with a functioning picturebox, and show you some of the other corners of the place and point things out.

Lucky with the weather too. Looks like you had a great day out. :)

Can't wait to see the rest of them!

Hypnolady, GrinderBloke, Gemma86, Grissom & Purdyamos - hope to see you on a future stroll!

As Dafoot has said, we felt that having a stroll once a month would be great. A couple of suggestions so far have been an animal sanctuary, zoo or similar & Roche Abbey.

Thats a shame, a guide would have been great, photography aside , the place is full of interesting local history, I'd have liked to have seen the final resting places of some of the founders of our city. Oh well, maybe another time if there is enough interest for a return visit.

Problems with me taking photos seem to have occurred in lots of places I visit, :(
first I get in trouble for taking photos the Millennium Galleries,
then I get approached by police for taking photos of Shrewsbury Hospital (not a hospital but old alms houses).
Then on our photo stroll at the Generel Cemetery I was approached and asked to delete a photo that I had taken pointing my camera at someones house window.
And now Hemlock is after my guts for garters,
something about a photo that I took through the Botanical Gardens pavilion windows.
Think It would be better for me to go out and take photos on my own (well with pippo) like I normaly do,
as I don't want to create problems for other people in the group.

Must admit, I often feel somewhat paranoid about being acosted by some 'security' person when out taking pics. One reason I rarely go anywhere busy with my camera :(

I like to think I'd be able to stick to my guns and tell 'em where to go when they tell me to delete photos, but as it hasn't happened yet....

Simply ask them to call the police (or offer to do it yourself) if they think that a law has been broken. They will have little choice but to back down because (unless you are outside MI6 HQ) there is no law against photography in a public place.

Half the time I'm not so sure the Police, when they arrive, would actually know that what you are doing is ok.

How many times have you read about Police stopping peeps with cameras? A fair few.
I'm probably just being paranoid! :)

Point is, would they bother to actually call the police in? I would guess not in 90% of cases. If they really are that serious and make the call, then I would back down and delete.
