View Full Version : The manor- is it a hole? or nice?
Neilmorbs 10-02-2005, 13:00 Hi all,
I am resarching some things about sheffield's Manor Estate and i would like to know:
-what is it like to live there?
(is it nice or bad and why??)
-What changes could make the place better?
(more/less houses, or parks or roads? perhaps you have some ideas? let me know)
i have heard some horror stories and some very proud stories- here's your chance to tell yours! is it a hole, or is it a community?
this would be very helpful.
thanks very much
Never been there outside of some form of transport, but i don't think its the greatest place in the world. Maybe i'm being unfair - i don't know the place, but i sure as hell know its reputation.
We just moved there on monday and havent had any bother so far  ill let ya know more when ive had chance to explore :D

Kristian 10-02-2005, 14:33 From what I've heard, things are improving around there. A lot of the derelict housing has been demolished, and new properties have been built for rent / to buy / shared ownership.
IIRC there has been a curfew in some parts too, which has improved things with kids.

the bit im on is vikinglea theyve got a curfu thing there, about 8.50 ya can see all the gangs of kids heading back home :D
abit further up prince of wales theres an estate that looks very deralict.

There are absolutely loads of threads on the manor already here mate, just search for 'manor'. Before certain users come along and starting spewing same old B.S.
Mat:thumbsup:
*sigh*
Here we go again, not everything you read in the Star is gospel people, sure the Manor has a bad rep but not every Manor native is a thieving chav who'd rob you as soon as look at you.
And no, I do not come from there myself, I just regularly visit the Vikinglea estate in Lower Manor.
You see what I mean Neil??

Boring!
Is this the kind of thing they teach in the beautiful, leafy, salubrious district of Longley?
Try writing something positive for once.
Pete1024 10-02-2005, 19:21 Every watched that police camera thing on TV, they always end up chasing stolen cars on the manor.

I think you forgot to add "I am an ass" before each "hole". But then again, people probably know that.

The use of some pale, ill looking blonde girl as his avatar is somewhat confusing.

manortopper 10-02-2005, 23:18 Back to reality for a moment...
I grew up on the Manor - a great place to live in the 60's and 70's - went severely downhill in the early 80's so we moved.
But I still maintain - nowhere else in the world I'd have rather had my formative years.

Ive had to do some work on the Viking estate recently and I have to say it was shocking.
Most of the people I met on there were great, the problem seems to be the kids.
One lady told me how she had stopped her kids going out as they were hanging around with these others who were causing all the trouble.
Another resident was showing me her back garden, the people living on the other side of the fence were using her garden as a bin.
Most of the house's there were filthy and this I think is where it gets some of its reputaion from. Some of the lads I work with say things like ' what a sh*t hole they are all stinking' but what they forget is, some of the dirtyest house's we ever have to go in are in very 'posh' area such as Fulwood and (sorry T0 20) Ecclesall.
The other thing that gets over looked when they have a go about the dirty house's, is in the posh area's the dirty house's are usually lived in by people with a bad attitude, snotty types...oh look at me I live in fulwood....etc. Back on the Viking there down to earth and to a man, very friendly.
The house's might not be sparkeling but most of the people are great.
Yeah, yeah. The Manor's wonderful, etc etc. Which is why it is one of the country's most notorious estates for crime, etc. But at least the people are "down to earth" etc etc. Fulwood/Ecclesall V Manor... I know where I'd rather live.
Internetowl 13-02-2005, 12:12 I'm sure there's millions of chavs / thieves / dope heads that would rather you live in Fulwood - so they can come and rob you at the weekends :)
Manor?????? Come on people its always been known for being rough. It's never really going to change. Of course they'll be decent people there

depends where abouts - manor is huge! depends who u know! largest no. of people on benefits - maybe that should be looked into.
they r regenerating the houses and area....what about SOME of the people? more community centres? activities? college facilities? more police??? not sure about police actually...may make things worse

Well said Diesel, there are more decent people on the Manor than anti-social types. This debate will go around and around. Those of you who don’t live on the Manor will have your opinion and we who live here will have ours.
I live and work on the Manor and if anyone wants to see both sides of the Manor please ring me on 01142642194 during working hours and ask for Steve. I will be pleased to take you on a tour of the area. You will be taken to the so-called dodgy areas and the more positive places. Then you can make your mind up about the Manor. Be sure to wear a good pair of walking shoes.

No need mate....we'll just get Wraggy to escort us…the local villains will tremble in their boots.....:)
And who is Wraggy,is he the head chef who runs all the scams on the manor. The council is to blame for all the problems on the estates, they should evict every body with a criminal conviction ie robbery, drugs, violence, etc who live in council property.
Internetowl 15-02-2005, 21:43 the whole estate would be empty :)
Still somewhere to house the economic migrants eh?
Kristian 15-02-2005, 22:12 Guys, help me with something!
Do the council have an obligation to rehouse bad tenants? E.g. if someone is evicted from a council property due to being a problem tennant, do the council have to find somewhere else for them?
Was just wondering, 'cos if not where on earth do these people go?

Another vote for the "it's a minority who spoil things for the majority", here. it's nearly always just a small percentage who act in this way.
"Wraggy" is Mr Wragg, the local community "bobby", whose beat is the manor.
I would partly agree with robo, about the idea of restricting tenancies for those who act in an anti-social manner. the problem is two-fold
one is that the council are obliged to provide social housing for those in need, and cannot discriminate, normally..
and secondly, if you evict these anti social tenants, the problem usually is scattered elsewhere. fine if you are rid of the so-and-so's giving you greif, but not oso good for the poor beggars who have the yobs moving in next door to *them*!
There used to be a family that lived next door to me who were drug dealers. their tenancy was a sort of restricted/ conditional tenancy, which gave the council better powers to evict them when they (yet again) got convictions for fencing stolen goods/ drug dealing/ car theft.
I think this type of restriction on a tenancy is a good idea.
It was purgatory putting up with their antics. and it was bliss when they were evicted, but I really felt sorry for their kids (who were neglected) and for the poor souls who were going to get them as neighbours.

stevie1957 16-02-2005, 17:15 A very good post from you Plain Talker.....
I’ve read a few of your posts and they are well thought out, well balanced and unbiased.
As for Robo’s post…..he seems to blame the council for the troubles on the Manor. It’s the problem families and anti social types that are to blame. If they behaved they’d be no problems here and, we’d not all get tarred with the same brush by outsiders. I agree with Plain Taker in that moving them on doesn’t solve anything….it just spreads it about.
“And who is Wraggy, is he the head chef who runs all the scams on the manor” Quote from Robo……
He is our community bobby and as Plan Taker will tell you…..Wraggy seems to be always lurking around keeping the “bad boy” on their toes.
So my offer still stands…anyone wanting a tour round the Manor (see my previous post) get in touch. We may even bump into Wraggy Robo…you can tell him what you think he is to his face.

What and move them to where?! These people have to live somewhere you know :loopy:
If not council estates, where would you put them?! Apart from the obvious choice of accommodation at Her Majesty's pleasure of course?!
