With the sound of it IKEA have a lot of answers to find over last nights fiasco where an estimated 6000 people came for a mad rush on the opening of its flag ship building in North London.
Well dozens upon dozons ended up in hospital due to heat exhaustion and one was also stabbed.
It follows another simular opening in Saudi Arabia again including IKEA.
Is it all worth it.
Think not.

The stabbing had nothing to do with the Ikea opening - according to the police - just happened to be in the same area

Stupid Londoners

Why don't the sad, pathetic no-hopers get a life instead of cheap furniture?

That's a bit harsh Abdul. They only went shopping. Would you have the same opinion if it was someone local? Perhaps folk from Fir Vale hurt in crowds at Meadowhall?

If they were stupid enough to be caught up in a scrum at McDonalds, I would have no sympathy for them at all :D

Probably because they were too desperate to be part of the 'me shop at IKEA too' fanclub rather than actually watch out for their fellow Londoners.

I suspect they did actually see something was wrong and surged forwards wanting to get a better view! :o

If you have ever been on the underground or a comuter train in the rush hour in London you whould know thats not how things work, it's every man for himself.

Londoners do have little regard for others, in my experience.

Even the unspoken rule that you keep to the right on the underground if you want to stand still on an escalator/travellator seems to be bull****. Running for a train on the left, I found that Londoners still barge past no matter how fast you move!

Crushed for IKEA furniture...what a world!

Picture the eulogy...

SICK JOKE ALERT: It would have been ironic if they'd been piling in for the new IKEA flat-pack coffins.

I heard on the radio this afternoon there was a stabbing...I was thinking why on earth would anyone take a knife to an Ikea store?

Unless they picked it up from one of the kitchen displays :D

Did the victim retaliate by throwing a rolling pin? Or a frying pan? :hihi:

Probably didn't notice...I remember feeling a sharp stabbing pain in IKEA, it was at the checkout as I emptied my wallet for the overpriced rubbish I'd mistakenly thought I needed...

If only!

I think Ikea is more of a cult than a furniture store.

I'm surprised you think Ikea is low price stuff. The impression I get is that it's aimed at wannabee trendies who wish to furnish their homes as if they're living in a trendy apartment and don't mind getting screwed over the price!

Shopping ...the new religion.Mad mad
Are people so greedy that they'll shop at any time, in any discomfort to save a few quid?
Abdul's right. They don't deserve any sympathy.
Let's hope the negative publivity is bad publicity for Ikea.

What a performance at IKEA!
Sums up what life is all about for a lot in Britain today:-greed , impatience , violence , selfishness and a big urge to nest-build , no matter how crap the material and the willingness of sane adults to spend valuable time with screws and bits of wood , instead of getting down to the pub and getting thoroughly kettled.

er, no, it's considerably cheaper.

They make a lot of money on standard priced fixtures, fittings etc. But it's cheap, and more importantly, plain - not overornamented like everything else. plain wooden table - £4. Can't argue with that. Bed - £45, not bad! Desklamp £4. And all under one roof in doncaster soon.

No one is forced to shop at IKEA. some don't like the fact that you are pretty much left to do everything apart from stock the stuff yourself.

You could always go to "we've gone bust again" Furniture world for your 0% pay nothing until you die offers that slash overpriced ugly sofa prices in half so they are only moderately overpriced.

Why such snobishness over inexpensive furniture? do you all have expensive antiques in your home ? Ikea is great for people on small budgets, i havent seen any of it myself but i know people that are very satisfied with it for the time being.

I heard about this from my mate this morning...

the really worrying thing is, he works for Ikea in nottingham part time... and he's due to go down to this store on friday to train some of the staff over the weekend :? he said he wouldn't be going if it wasn't for the fact they'd got him a nice company car to drive down in and a lovely hotel and he was taking his new girlfriend and had some plans to woo her a little early for valentines whilst down there...

I told him if anyone threatens him with a machette for discount to just give it them, its not worth getting gutted... its not his sales performance at stake anyways, his store is in Nottingham ;) lol

It isn't snobishness at all poppins - as I've outlined in my previous posts, I wasn't even aware that Ikea stocked low priced furniture.

What I will ridicule mercilessly is the Ikea cult mentality, which as we've seen, is already responsible for a few deaths.

Mocking faiths that cannot prove the existence of their Gods is one thing...

But, ridiculing the Goddess 'IKEA' when she plainly exists up and down our country for all to see really is something else... now on your knees!!

Greedy, ignorant and pathetic - never was much of a fan of Southerners :hihi:

I've got no sympathy for people who stand about for hours with their children to get in a shop at midnight just to save a few quid on badly made furniture :loopy:

Heard the other day that they are starting to sell flat pack housing sometime soon as well - what's the bets you get 3 extra windows, a door missing and another bathroom instead of a kitchen? Oh and the instructions will be in Chinese.... Then of course it will fall to bits after a couple of years, unbelievable!

The snarlup on the N/Circular was cause by nothing less/more than greed.

Most of those intent on getting into Ikea, would be those daft enough to ring an 09 number if they had been told they had 'Won a prize' (even though they didn't enter any competition) :|

Speaking as someone who works in London & travels up from Southend (i work a 5 nights on & 3 nights off shift). May i say the said riot was caused due to IKEA offering sofa's that would normally retail @ £350.00 for £45.00. Being this was in Edmonton & not an affluent are of London, I would ask all of the Northeners commenting on this, not to "Give their opinion" until they have travelled to said area & stereotyping us "Southerners" that is soooo often levelled @ us!.

I am aware that Edmonton is a very deprived area of London, but even Tottenham MP David Lammy said Ikea should have known that offering cheap prices would cause chaos.

Do those soft-in-the-head consumers, who are quite prepared to queue for several hours before opening time, think they're going to be the the only ones out for a bargain? I am consistently amazed at how much grief mankind puts itself through, all in the completely voluntary act of shopping.

I think every new IKEA store that opens should have medical staff from the Red Cross on standby. I think we should also have a fund raising concert too, to relieve the mental trauma of those who were unfortunate to miss out on the bargains, and to provide financial assistance to those who spent too much.

I used to work in Edmonton and every other area of London regularly over the last few years, I'm well aware it's a hole. It's still no excuse to stand outside a store for 3 hours up until midnight with your kids just to get a cheap, crap sofa.

The only time I've been to Ikea I coudn't get my trolley from the store to the car as the bollards were too close together....

Problem:
Do I abandon the trolley & bring the car to the bollards risking getting my stuff nicked?
Or go back to the checkout & get a full refund because the store designers are STOOOPID!.:loopy: :loopy: :loopy:

Do they still do this by the way - with the bollards?

I haven't been back since

Yep, I was at the one in Notts just previous to Xmas, same predicament.
I intentionally abandoned my trolley at the closest point possible to my car and left it for the Ikea staff to collect. When shopping alone its a major pain, about time Ikea took note!

IKEA must have taken note as I recently bought 4 bookshelves and one of the attendants took the trolley out with them on, waited while (Sheffield for until) I brought the car round and helped load said bookshelves. Solid wood, £50 a go and way cheaper than making them myself.

Mind you, I wouldn't have queued at midnight, that way madness does indeed lie. :loopy:

People took their kids, for god's sake. What were they thinking? Who in their right mind gets up and sets out in the middle of the night to buy a sofa anyway? But even if you decided to to that, how [b]thick[b/] would you have to be to drag your kids out of bed to go with you.

People fighting and stabbing each other over a sofa. The world's run mad. :loopy:
