it was something like Cambridge Arcade, I think.

I remember the blind fellow who used to stand at the top of the arcade, and sold things like pens and matches etc, on a tray that was slung around his neck.

I do remember that this chap's hearing was legendary. The story goes that he could hear the difference in the sounds of different denominations of coins you put in his cup:- he would know if you'd shortchanged him.

Yes - it was the Cambridge Arcade. It was mostly clothes shops but Jones' jewellers was on the left near the bottom. It was a crime to demolish it - there's a lovely Victorian arcade in Leeds, for example.

Cambridge Arcade is correct. Hodgkinson's camera shop was also down there, I remember buying a camera there for 6d, in their famous annual sale. Came out near the Palace Union St cinema, and the famous El mambo coffee bar.
It was indeed a crime to demolish it, but we have a Council that treasures nothing.
