Its my local in many respects.....it survives purely on food trade in the day, which is excellent and well worth the experience. HUGE menu caters for everything you could wish for.....in the evening there are a handful of locals in but that's all, as its so remote, so if you looking for a lively pub at night, forget it...if you looking to chill out and unwind, then its great....

But I'd recommend the Sportsman over the TML any day.

Better food - and then some - better beer IMO.

But usually the TML gets it spot on

Not tried the Sportsman by the Merry Lads for ages...what cask ales do they have on there?

The Sportsman do the best pint of Landlord in Sheffield, it's great for food also.

Both are decent pubs and both have something different to offer. The Three Merry Lads is more open plan and has 3 decent beers usually on often including Kelham Easy Rider. A decent pub all round, gets busier with meals however. Sit outside in the garden in the sunshine and enjoy the glorious view across to the Rivelin Valley.

The Sportsman has more of a country / olde worlde pub feel to it, as other posters mention it does an excellent pint of Landlord. The food is supposed to be good too. A much smaller and perhaps cosier pub with some quirky addittion such as the drawings on the walls of the Gents'. The large playing field adjacent is popular with children and those with kites and model aircraft.

So both two decent pubs. A good cycle ride out to them and then venture further by foot or bike to Redmires and up to Stanage edge. Equally if by car you can take a walk up on Stanage by parking at Redmires, or try the paths that take you down towards Rivelin Reservoirs, after a bracing walk both are decent pubs to drop into for a pint.

Alternatively the Number 51 bus route runs until 11.30pm (ish) and stops at the terminus a mere 200 yds from the pubs.

Three of us went for something to eat earlier this year, but OH was a bit put-out that when he ordered a mixed grill and asked for the steak to be well done, he was told "the chef does everything medium". Our meals were ok but OH wasn't that fussed.

On a slightly funny note, me and a mate called in for a Coke after we'd been for a wander last summer in the sun, and as it was hot and we'd be walking up round the reservoirs, we asked for pints. The lad behind the bar stopped the manageress and asked what he should serve pints of coke in :hihi:

Another vote for the Sportsman being a good place for a pint of Taylor's Landlord.
