View Full Version : Who are Sheffield's largest employers?
Who are Sheffield's largest employers and can you provide links/evidence/numbers to back up your claims?
I think the council is probably number 1 followed by (i'm guessing) the NHS and then the 2 Univeristies.
Any one know the top 10? Top 5?
Nomme
The Government!
Department for Work and Pensions, Jobcentre Plus, Inland Revenue, Home Office, DVLA, Small Business Service, Department for Skills and Education all have a significant presence in Sheff ... and that's the ones i can think of off the top of my head.
bigpockets 09-02-2005, 19:11 Sheffield is the base of HSBC's IT community + a number of back office functions. All in all they employ well over 6000 in the Sheffield area.
Elphi 24 09-02-2005, 19:16 Sheffield University employs around 5500 staff across a wide range of disciplines - not sure how many Hallam Uni employ
Norwich Union? Outokumpu aka Avesta Sheffield?
LoopyLou 10-02-2005, 06:54 Not Norwich Union, they have about 1600 people in sheffield at any one time....
They have quite high turn over though, if you count people in sheffield who have EVER worked at Norwich Union in the past, then it would be more like 50,000.............
Interesting suggestions so far thanks.
Anymore anyone?

i believe Hallam have about 6000 staff, but I'll have to double check that. (I'll go and count them all)
It's the council (about 14-15,000 staff I think) followed by us at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (12,500). They're the two biggest employers in South Yorks as well now following the downsizing of the major industries.

Having worked there for a mere 2 weeks this comes as no surprise to me.
I would NEVER buy any products from them.

Well this page (http://jobs.sheffield.gov.uk/corp_information.asp?NAV=G) also claims the the council is S. Yorkshire' largest employer.
If we take STH as number 2 then this page (http://www.shef.ac.uk/psychology/sitvac.html)
claims that Sheffield University is the 3 largest employer in the city.
If that is so I guess we can assume that Hallam Univeristy is fourth.
Hmm. Not sure how the civil service/ NHS fits in to all this.
Anyway that gives us a top 4 of :
1) The Council
2) STH
3) Sheffield Uni
4) Hallam Uni
.... or do you know better?

the NHS is definitely the biggest employer in europe... not sure if this is applicable to sheffield in particular though.
STH is part of the NHS - well the adult hospitals side of it (Hallamshire, Northern General, Weston Park, Jessop and Charles Clifford).
There's also the Children's, the GPs and other NHS employers which are differrent organisations.

We employ 16 so that makes us number 5 eh. Wow. I am impressed!
There aren't 12,000 staff at the Uni. More like half that.

I think the post was a subtle poke at the decline of Sheffield's manufacturing industry and not to be taken seriously.

redrobbo 06-04-2005, 01:58 Surely it has got to be the council - teachers, nursery staff, home helps, social workers, street cleaners, planning department, Town Hall staff, Highways, gritters, parks, etc. The list is endless. Not all are full time staff of course, e.g., school crossing patrol wardens only work limited hours.
