View Full Version : Who are Sheffield's largest employers? nomme 09-02-2005, 18:18 Who are Sheffield's largest employers and can you provide links/evidence/numbers to back up your claims? I think the council is probably number 1 followed by (i'm guessing) the NHS and then the 2 Univeristies. Any one know the top 10? Top 5? Nomme RichF 09-02-2005, 18:42 The Government! Department for Work and Pensions, Jobcentre Plus, Inland Revenue, Home Office, DVLA, Small Business Service, Department for Skills and Education all have a significant presence in Sheff ... and that's the ones i can think of off the top of my head. bigpockets 09-02-2005, 19:11 Sheffield is the base of HSBC's IT community + a number of back office functions. All in all they employ well over 6000 in the Sheffield area. Having worked there for a mere 2 weeks this comes as no surprise to me. Well this page (http://jobs.sheffield.gov.uk/corp_information.asp?NAV=G) also claims the the council is S. Yorkshire' largest employer. If we take STH as number 2 then this page (http://www.shef.ac.uk/psychology/sitvac.html) claims that Sheffield University is the 3 largest employer in the city. If that is so I guess we can assume that Hallam Univeristy is fourth. Hmm. Not sure how the civil service/ NHS fits in to all this. Anyway that gives us a top 4 of : 1) The Council 2) STH 3) Sheffield Uni 4) Hallam Uni .... or do you know better? STHT 10-02-2005, 10:33 STH is part of the NHS - well the adult hospitals side of it (Hallamshire, Northern General, Weston Park, Jessop and Charles Clifford).
