View Full Version : Panic Buying for Xmas in Sheffield!!
doddicus 22-12-2007, 10:40 Tell us your experiences of people you witnessed panic buying in Sheffield!!
The supermarkets are the best place for this experience..BUT WHY!!...the shops are only closed for two days and most of the food gets thrown away anyway.
doddicus 22-12-2007, 12:22 My wife has just sent me a text saying that she and her friend have been stood at the checkout at Morrisons at Bramley for 45 minutes now.
Greybeard 22-12-2007, 13:20 Horrendous scrum in M&S food hall this morning. I just turned on my heel and walked straight back out
I was stuck at a check out in Morrisons (Catcliff) for nearly an hour yesterday. Some people had 2 large trolleys over flowing with food/booze:loopy:
Are we expecting a neuclear war or something:huh:
purdyamos 22-12-2007, 13:41 I've just come back from one last shop on the Moor, and went in Home Bargains, Sainsbury's and the greengrocer. None of them had bigger than normal queues, all looked well-stocked, people were not more obviously stressed than usual, it was just like any ordinary saturday.
I was surprised, but I wouldn't want anyone put off by expecting it to be a nightmare. It was alright. :)
By the way, some people might like to know that Sharps the best greengrocer in Sheffield is open on Sunday (he usually isn't).

It tends to be the big supermarkets that the food panic-buyers descend on, rather than the smaller, local ones or ordinary little shops.
Panic-buying food (especially bread) seems to be a Sheffield trait, at least it never used to happen in Birmingham.
When we first moved up here, we trundled into the supermarket as usual just before Christmas and were shocked to find the bread shelves completely empty! And half the other shelves were empty, as well.
birdsandbees 22-12-2007, 13:55 Ive just got back from Morrisons in Hillsborough, had to take my daughter for her weekly shop, it was complete chaos, queuing down asiles you cant get round properly, no staff to help pack so people are emptying trollys then having to pack then empty trolly again. whilee all the time listening to a band play half a christmas tune break for a minute then start again on a different tune........I realise I love Christmas, but hate shopping
Town not much worse than normal right now. Just take your time - accept you have to queue for 5 minutes and your away. I bet meadowhall is like a practice run for surviving in hell though! The wife and mother in law had a stress free saunter round sainsburys at crystal peaks but they did get there at 7am!
SpiderPete 22-12-2007, 14:18 I have just come back from town, wet and knackered. :gag:
Finished my last of the crimbo shopping, and realised at the end I needed a tin-opener and only (oh I cannot believe it my mind has gone blank), the big shop near the markets, and saw through the window the queues were so long I couldnt see the end so went home.
Lets hope the shop below has one :), some places in town were very busy others were ok.

SpiderPete 22-12-2007, 14:32 Wilkinsons :)
Yes thats the one. :)
I went to the shop downstairs and remembered the shop name, anyway they had one.
I can eat now
MichaelJP 22-12-2007, 14:38 It's weird - the shops only close on xmas day now, not sure why people need to stock up with food for a week.

It's not just here, my brother always buys about half a dozen loaves for the freezer.
Why bread though? Who eats bread at Christmas??? It's not like you're going to have a toast binge for Christmas dinner, is it?
I find it's old people who stock up on bread most though. I've just seen our local bus go past and it was for once packed - it's usually not very full at all - packed out with grannies, with bags full of bread no doubt!
lilmisstiger 22-12-2007, 14:58 just been to asda in chapeltown!! carpark jam packed (presumbaly people getting the train to meadowhall or town?) the shop??quieter than most saturdays to be honest! they had you queuing round the bread then a sign saying when checkouts free keeping all the aisles free! very sensible :D :D

People eat and drink more at christmas and I always buy my food to last a week anyway. Only crazy people with too much time on their hands go food shopping everyday
