In 1941, there was a cafe on Matilda Street in Sheffield near to where I worked and We had a hot dinner in there every day, a huge plate of meat and potato pie, as much as a hungry 14 yr. old could eat, plus a large helping of apple pie and custard, also, steaming hot, with a pint of hot tea for 10 old pence, served by the proprietor " Fred "a middle aged slim man with a red face as he was always rushing to serve a cafe full of customers.
Ah happy days : they will never return.
