When I first moved to Sheffield in '99 I lived close to both roads and would often walk down both and consequently compare them. In the time I lived in Sharrow I saw London Road improve dramatically as more excting places sprung up, the Beer Engine became Dulos and so on (yes I know its not technically London Road!!)

People love Ecclesall Road for many reasons, its always been one of Sheffield's most vibrant roads...but which road do you prefer?

For me its London Road every time :)

Funny cos a lot of people are saying London Road when I thought it'd be the opposite! Definately got the best places to eat out in my opinion, I've never been blown away by anywhere on Eccy Road. Prefer it for drinking too, as you've got Dulos, The Cremorne and Barrys Bar has got redstripe on tap and sells dragon stout!!

not a fan the of ecclesall road pubs, with the exception of the lescar, but technically even thats not eccy road.

i think it has to be london road for me, i love dulos, but the real clincher is the food on offer.

anybody who knows me knows how much i love my grub, and i just love being able to go into the continental shops, and buy stuff i cant really find any where else.

technically though, my favourite shop for this is spar on abbeydale road....the number of times ive wandered in a little worse for wear just wanting wine, but finding that they have indian sweets as well is just the icing on the cake.....and breakfast in the morning!

London Road for me. I love going for a pint in one of the pubs along there after the match at Bramall Lane. I grew up near London Road and my Dad worked in The Old Crown and my Aunty Jean and Uncle Wilf (not real family but we always called them that) had the Barrall Inn, my Mum did a spot of cleaning there as well.

Ecclesall Road has it's good points but has too much "not from Sheffield" student attitude about it for me, London Road is down to earth and friendly.

Without the Classic Rock bar. In my opinion London road is superior for Boozers.
Especially when you count the White lion. The Cremone is great, Barry's Bar is great, And Dulo is a gem of a place for a smashing atmosphere.

The best Boozer on Ecclesall road area is the Porter Cottage in my opinion. The Varsity is annoying with the racket of TV screens in every single corner and no place of tranquility. The Nursery is sort of OK but nothing special now the snooker table has gone.
The whole of Ecclesall road has plunged down market from it's heyday 20 years ago when it was feted as "the golden mile" There are far too many take aways and shabby shops now, and the traffic is almost impossible at busy times.

I long for the days of the Slug and Fiddle, the Classic rock bar and the Non-Pots club.

I like Eccy Road mainly due to Yankees, Uncle Sam's and The Nursery. I will concede that some of the places on Eccy Road are rather pretentious and pricey. Barely go down London Road really.

I live on London Road. Its not bad. Some druggies outside the pharmacy but theyve just removed the plants where they used to sit down, so hopefully theyll sod off.
Loads of great places to eat, Zeugma is fantastic as is Wild Rice Chinese takeaway. Never been in the pubs though, always go to Eccy road for that

callippo
25-12-2007, 13:29
that Wild Rice is where I go for green curry when I can't be bothered to make my own, they actually do a better job of it than the Thais next door - not that it's all that difficult.

London road every time - it is the cultural hub of the city if you can tolerate the odd smack head asking: 'got any change mate?' or 'got a spare fag?'... Dulo is possibly one of the best pubs in the city, Dim Sum is the greatest Chinese, the Thai restaurant has a fantastic menu and of course Steers Beers for some of the best deals in Sheffield. The Cremorne (which has a petition to rid their doorstep of junkies) is excellent, cosy and inviting - if the Chemist was to disintegrate taking it's vagrants with it, it would be perfect. Eccy Road on the other hand is O.K if you happen to have about a million quid in the back burner and like ponsing it up with the general pretentious A-hole outer city rich kid and executive population of the city.

Shame the police never arrest the driver of that BMW that pulls up on a daily basis next to the Chemist - I wonder what the driver is doing associating with those junkies...

:gag:

i reckon a quick call to crimestoppers is in order then with the reg number and a description....could be some cash in it!

the cremorne have worked really hard to clean up their corner of london road, and credit to them where credit is due, theyve taken a stand and done something proactive instead of just complaining and hoping something changes.

Though if your bedroom is on the road side, it does get very noisy at times!! especially when its hot and you need to leave the window open... plus my room stank of cigarette smoke all summer.

Unless you go to The Devonshire, The Porter Brook, Porter Cottage (I know, not techincally Ecclesall Road) and the Banner. Proper pubs, good beer (particularly in the Devonshire), good mix of customers, well priced etc... I don't think there's a place for Wetherspoons in Sheffield, full stop. We have lots of decent, small well priced pubs. It's a shame people aren't more adventurous.

I agree, the Porter Cottage is nice. Porter Brook does good beer and reasonable food but internally is fake. The Banner cross is well off the Eccy Rd drinking circuit & The Devonshire harks back to 80's fake. But all charge nearly double what you'll pay for a drink in Wetherspoons

there aren't really any "proper" pubs on Eccy Road, London road pubs you can get a decent beer and usually a decent night in any of them, the crown has great Karaoke nights and its always full, you can chat with people there and there is no pretention at all, you also get friendly welcomes rather than the what do you want on Eccy road. The Cream-Horne is a top boozer an all.

Eccy Road is just a posers paradise, i'm not sure anyone actually goes there for any reason other than to be seen!

The problem people on this thread seem to have with Eccy Road is 'outsiders'... sad really. I love going for a stroll up there - nice shops, couple of nice cafes, it's leafy, the botanicals, Endcliffe Park... And would much rather go for a drink there than West Street

I like both, London Road for food though, every time :)

i don't mind the outsoders, i even consider some as friends, i just think its the whole poncey vibe up there, don't get me wrong it's all really down to personal preference as with anything in life, i'd just rather drink in a pub rather than a bar and eat proper food rather than the "arty" food of eccy road.

Ecclesall Road for me. A variety of eateries, different shops, parks and an easy commute.

I used to love Abbeydale/London Road, and all the second hand/antique shops, however, they have slowly disappeared. Not much to do there now unless you want to eat.

I don't believe that many folk actually visit Ecclesall Road if they think that its full of rich folk wanting to be seen. In reality its full of students, most of the terraced houses leading off it are 6 bed student lets, the whole area is scruffy due to bins overflowing.

I'm not so sure about this posing thing either, its a bit like the folk who post that everyone living in Burngreave is a saint and everyone living in Dore is beneath contempt. :loopy:

Barry's has a nice an authentic 'reggae style' atmosphere, I like to chill in the beer garden though - reason being: 'No dawgs alowed!!!' But the red stripe on tap - WOW!!! And the staff are very friendly - it isn't moody at all:love:.

HA! Regarding London Road: I often think its hard to find a Sheffield accent I've been going there so long I think mine has warped into some kind of new world accent a bit Chinese, a bit Iranian, a little Turkish, slightly West Indian, with a little Eastern European, Thai, Indian and Italian - not to mention the influence of all the alumni from around the country that drink there - and what with the new student village were surely bound to see a varied mix of the teeny boppers with traffic cones on their heads - ooops - sorry - they'll all probably be heading to Ecci Road like flies to.... well I'll let you finish my sentence for me.

Personally (and speaking as an ex-student) I prefer London road to Eccesall, though IMO Eccesall has much better prospects if you include Sharrow Vale road, most of the shops/restraunts on Eccie are a bit high-end (or want to be) or too chain-ey for my liking. Tho the Nursery is alright for a cheap drink and maybe a pub lunch.

Still yet to give the new Lescar a proper go, been in once and it still seemed pretty sound but only stayed for a couple. TBH always preferred the porter cottage, mainly cos of the jukebox.

many of the people who go on ecclesall road are wannabe celebs, and just stare at other people wondering if they've got more than them, the woman have a poker face look, they suck their cheeks in and puff out their lips, trying to "get seen", and the middle aged men all where jeans with suite jackets. London roads got better over the years, with some nice places to eat. Having said that so has ecclesall, so i guess it's the type of people not so much the area. I think both could do with one or two more good places to eat, and champs on ecclesall road really needs to change back to what they used to be, because now it seems boring.

London Road every time except for the charity shops and close proximity to the Botannical Gardens and Endcliffe Park that Ecclesall Road has. Ecclesall Road has too many chain shops and restaurants and too much traffic. On the other hand drivers on London and Abbeydale Roads are the worst in Sheffield but London Road has more unique character, more variety and is far more down to earth.
