i have used olive oil in my dogs ears but i would use a cotton ball not bud just incase they move suddenly and it goes to far in.

If the ears are getting mucky often then that suggests that there may be something causing the muck (either ear mites or an infection) as healthy ears more or less keep themselves clean. If they need doing often then I'd get your little one's ears checked out at the vets just in case.

I check for mites etc every day during grooming, and it's not making her scratch or anything, I just wanted to check if the latest methods of cleaning were any different :D When I had my last yorkie, we were encouraged to 'strip' the ears, but I don't really want to do that.

I know its not nice to pluck the ears, but the hair will be causing the excess wax and dirt, so its a vicious circle.;)

Hi. For my dogs ears I use these little wet wipes from pets at home especially for dogs eyes and ears. :)

I wonder if I could get her to sit still long enough while I use one of those little nose trimmers in her ears, or is that a bad idea?

Hi Hayley, trimming the hair wont make any difference. Its the hair in the ear canal that causes the problem and this is deep into the ear, so the only way to get rid of it is to pull it.

The dog does get desensitised after a while, a bit like plucking your eyebrows. Its being cruel to be kind, you can buy Thornit ear powder which acts as a grip for your fingers. You can give the ears a good clean afterwards with some peppermint ear cleaner which can help to sooth and clean.

Good luck.

I'm so glad that Molly has huge ears that don't need any of this sort of thing doing to them! I could drop a cotton wool ball down her ears without it touching the sides. I know that there are down sides to this sort of ears too, but (touch wood) they are pretty good at looking after themselves so I leave them well alone.
