Mike the Cool Person....

I lived with a guy who was the image of Vivian...though he was a dentist rather than a medic. He was still as mad as a basket of snakes.

And for a year I had a landlord in Manchester who made Jerzy Bolowski look like Mother Teresa!

This show was a revelation to a 15 year old in 1982. My jaw hit the floor and it has stayed there ever since.

Until then, I hadn't suspected that I could possibly laugh so much.

Can you modify your original post to add a poll? It would be nice to see the end result.

I'd vote Rik because he is the butt of everyone's jokes.

The one I least liked was Mike. I'm not sure if I didn't like the guy or the character.

It was good to see three of them move on to "Bottom". It's just like looking in on them 10 years on and seeing they're still miserable failures!

The young ones is an excellent program. vyvyan the punk has got to be my favorite. am an 80's child and loved the program when i was a fair bit younger .... totally fell in love with it ...... always thought vyvyan was well funny ... ade edmonson n rik mayall are pure comedy genius if u ask me. early bottom stuff is great too , although has gone a bit downhill lately ....
mike was always my least favorite ... never really got his jokes n stuff when was younger n still not keen on that character but hes needed for the balance within the house etc ..... infct theyre all great. even the landlord .. ah whats his name ... Alexei sayle thats the one... although im not too fond of most of his comedy work...

anyone else got the VHS's? if you freeze frame it strange little clips pop up for a fraction of a second ... like a man on skis and a dripping tap .... like subliminal messages type thing

also find it wicked that the young ones is still funny to this day ... a lot of comedy shows die out with age but the young ones will forever be a classic p**s take of british culture in the 80s...

Anyone else cherish Vivian's Anti-The Good Life rant?

Carmine, I'll have you know that Felicity Kendall is sweetly pretty - and I want to defend her!

Vivian without a doubt, I thought he was everybodies fave.

I hated Mike and was never too fond of Alexi Sayles character.

I loved Rick; I kind of became him when I was about 15 - in attitude at least!

This takes me back. I was around 20 when this came out and had long hair just like Neil. I used to get kids calling me Neil all the time so he's got to be my favourite, if only for reminding me of my youth. Of course, I'm middle aged now, short hair, married with child, big mortgage, respectable job.
Still feel the same on the inside though :)

Neil - he rated All Things Must Pass as the grooviest album ever and I tend to agree. Also, he had a number 2 hit in 1984 with Hole in my Shoe which was like, way far out.

'Oh look at all that cheese under the cooker'. He was also soft as ****e.

Bottom was a funny series, but I prefered The Young Ones as there was an intelligence and a definite agenda beneath the slapstick violence and distorted stereotyping.

Neil in a letter to bank manager:

Darling Fascist Bully Boy.

Give me some more money.

You ba%$%rd.

Love
Neil

(From the episode where Neil is forced to join the police - IIRC - WIPD)

I loved the Jackanory series with Rik Mayall reading 'George's Marvellour Medicine' Was fab, he's such a funny guy, although he's looking a little pervy of late! :gag:

Best performance from Alexi Sayle:

Alexi Sayle (dressed as Mussolini): Now you go away and practice that, and if you don't get it right I kick your head in.

Neil: Fascist!

Alexi Sayle: Ci!

I love the Young Ones now, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it for years - Rik Mayall reminded me hugely of my first boyfriend (in terms of looks mainly) who I didn't have entirely fond memories of!

(Even so, he wasn't the prat that Rik - sorry, Wik - was! :D )

In recent years, I've enjoyed the programme a lot more, having been deprived of it in years gone by!

Oh, my favourite character is SPG, the vicious hamster .....

Yep, SPG is a good character! (Vyvyan's Rat(?), Special Patrol Group)

Of the main characters Rik has got to be the best, is definitely in my opinion the best written character and most believeable (I know its not supposed to be totally realistic but I hope you get my meaning)

Come on in Neil, and take the tit off your head!

I thought Rik was the most acute caricature - so true of trendy lefty "intellectual" students at the time!

Which one was Balowski?
