Pear Shaped / Tits Up

Does anyone find these negative terms offensive to the female form?

Just wondered... please discuss.

IIRC

Pear shaped refers to the shape of a pear, the idea being, someone was aiming at a perfect circle, but got something "pear shaped", ie less than ideal.

Tits up, refers to "falling on your arse", and therefore landing "tits up". Same as "belly up". Similar to "arse over tit".

IMHO it has nothing to do with being negative towards women, I do really hope you meant this as a joke (for your sake).

Personally I've always preferred VNS (Vertical Nipple Syndrome) - a more geeky form of tits up - and even less offensive to the female form if possible as nipples are universal!

Pear shaped refers to balls, not women.

Titsup is a variety of catsup made from small birds. At least, so I'm informed.

I've never thought of it as being directly derogative towards women, especially the 'Pear Shaped' one. A close mate of mine has been using it ever since I met him and I'm sure if I asked him about this he'd give me one of those funny looks that said "What ARE you on about Paul?"

I can see from a feminist's point of view how it might be taken that way but it's never occured to me. I hope this doesn't turn into a debate about women's rights and equality because there's already far too many of these discussions on the forum as is.

Your average feminist must be scraping the barrel if she considers comparison of a misshapen circle with an oddly shaped fruit sexist or derogatory.

How would she feel about phrases like 'cock up' or 'shafted', which are used to mean pretty much the same thing, I wonder?

Yep, with leddi on this one. So how about,

"Cock Up / Balls Up

Does anyone find these negative terms offensive to the male form?"

Purleeeeze !

I have never thought about the following phrases being taken in the wrong context between Male & Female...
Cocked up / Balls'd up / Tits up / B*ll*x to it / Pear shaped...

I have said a couple of these in the past an the thought never crossed my mind that i was talking about a Mans or Womens body (parts)... or indeed offend anyone that may have been close by :?

How about F*k'd / Shagged / Shafted... Could this offend Men & Women... who have hang ups about sex!?

I feel if your a little po'd with something that hasnt gone to plan... the last thing on your mind is to watch what your saying or take a second to think of what your about to say may offend the people around...

Nah! B*ll*x to that :o  :hihi:

Sniff....sniff.....

Do I detect the evil pervasive stench of political correctness?

I've used these phrases for most of my adult life, and have never thought of the sexual connotation. I also say 'You get on my tits' to people - this doesn't mean I'm sprouting female breasts.

I never did launch that thread on PC....this is an excellent reason why such a thread is needed!

An ICBM maybe a more appropriate thing to launch.

Maybe the pears should hire a lawyer to claim compensation for being discriminated against because of their shape? Equal rights for all fruit! Especially pears and bananas.

I prefer "it's gone Pete Tong", though I realise this might be offensive to anyone called Pete Tong.

I also have a habit of saying 'It's fallen in the water', which I think references the Goon Show, which was before even MY time! :)

Ok now I'm wondering why you were wondering this? Any clues?

Despite lots of people claiming this is PC gone mad (as usual), no-one has even suggested that anyone might find them offensive, and I don't think anyone in this thread does.

So what's the story?

Well thats what I thought also.

Reminds me of someone I know thinking that the expression `daft as a brush` comes from a brush not being really very smart.

Who knows........

Maybe we should stop saying this too. We wouldn't want to offend the manufacturers of street-sweeping and house-cleaning equipment would we. :loopy:

You know I hate to be pedantic (;) ), but the actual line from the Goon Show is:

HE'S fallen in the water

The term pear shaped comes from the early days of powered flight when, if a loop the loop went wrong the loops would not be circular but rear shaped instead, nothing to do with women at all, unless they were flying the plane of course.

My favorites are:

"It's all turned to rat sh*t"

"It's going to hell in a hand basket"

and bizzarely "It's all gone poo flavoured"

I would only be bothered if "pear-shaped" and "tits up" were used to describe me. Otherwise, they seem harmless enough.

From the superb comedy series Spaced

"I'd look like a tw@t in a jumpsuit"

"Don't say that Tim, it's a word that hates women!"

"What, tw@t?"

"No, jumpsuit"

From these replies I think we've established that none of us are the slightest bit offended by these phrases.

So now perhaps the OP could explain the purpose of this thread?
