Hi,

Mi mum just gave me a menu for UK Mame on Fulwood Road... now I have never had African Carribean food before but it sounds nice so wanted opinions on this place and also do they deliver all over Sheffield? Says no certain limits on the menu.
Not sure what I will like either, I eat mainly chicken based things, don't mind a bit of spice. Any recommendations?

Thanks :-)

As an established foodie - I'd skip it, I'm afraid.

It's very hit and miss.

The service is absolutely abysmal. Possibly the worst I've ever experienced - and I've been around!

You'll be waiting a long, long time for your food, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is just plain bizarre.

It has fantastic potential, but the owner - and I know him personally - needs a rocket inserting somewhere where the sun is currently not shining.

A lovely man doth not make a successful restaurant/business I'm afraid.

Aww, shame to hear it, fancied something different too! I was thinking of the takeaway option (delivery) but suppose the service would be similar. Still open to opinions though but will bear this all in mind :-)

A friend and I ate there a few years ago. We experimented with food we were not used to eating, and had an enjoyable meal. But, Stagewalker's experience would appear to be more recent than mine.

I agree it's not the world's most organised place, but I wouldn't write it off. I have many happy memories of that place, although usually because of extenuating circumstances. Odd menu, never the wine you want, debit / credit card machine never works etc etc etc. Occasional moments of brilliance in the food though.

Ive been a few times and the foods great, especially the Johnny Cakes! The soups a little salty though, and yes im affraid it does take ages for the food. We once ordered and it took 2/3 hours I think, but it was worth the wait. If you are going to order, make sure you order a few hours before......... They are really nice people and did make us chuckle :hihi:

There used to be a load of UK Mamas in London a few years back. I think it is a franchise. Always liked the ones in London so am going to check it out. Will report back.

We gave it a number of tries Red...hoping desperately that things would improve :(

I wanted it to work - I really did. The chap who owns it is a wonderful, wonderful man, but I suspect that it's surviving on little more than a shoestring and memories of the past.

It's certainly been up there in days gone by - you need only look at the photo's displayed on the walls. But on the occasions when we've been - we've been the only ones there (and I'm talking peak times on Friday and Saturday night)

I once witnessed an angry customer calling up about their takeaway which was three hours late. At that point we had been waiting two hours for our main course. There were no other customers in the restaurant.

If ever there was a project for Gordon Ramsay's kitchen nightmares - this is it.

This I would agree with. Unfortunately it's all so unpredictable.

As a booker for large events I expect both quality and consistency - every time. Not just when the Chef's in a good mood.

We went approximately 7 years ago. Even though we ordered different meals (with different meat), they were basically the same gloupy slop, tasted identical. As with many here, we really wanted to like it, but it was quite terrible. We were the only ones in the place and the waitress and (I assume) the owner just sat on the table next to us doing the books and basically making us feel uncomfortable. Suffice to say, we never went back. No atmosphere, poor food.

If you go in a big group don't be talked into the banquet menu...it's stodge + stodge. If you decide to give it a go, try the mutton curry, it's excellent.

BTW, I like the sign in the window..."Romantic African Drumming" :hihi::hihi::hihi:

We went there about 5 years ago and I have never had such slow service (2hrs+). From the sounds of it that hasn't improved.

No one wants to rush a meal out but there comes a point where everyone's getting annoyed because they're hungry. Maybe have a meal first before going?

I have been once for a friend's birthday and really enjoyed it. Yes it is a little surreal and the service can at times be slow but it is a truly delightful place and I enjoyed my meal a lot. It's great because it is so different to all the chain restaurants and fast buck profiteering restaurants that dominate the market nowadays. You get really friendly service and a free drumming lesson if you are lucky. A real one off :)

It's probably worth going once for the experience. But eat first, 'cos you'll be starving by the time your food gets to your table! And if you don't like food too salty, you should ask them to go easy on it.

Don't bother trying to get them to deliver, it's a total waste of time, they have to get a taxi to do it and then they want to charge you a tenner extra, and then the food doesn't arrive for 4 hours and when it does it's cold and not what you ordered.

I wish I had seen this thread before : (

Have recently been there for the set menu. We don't normally go out for meals (courtesy of the credit crunch), and I really wish we hadn't go. The service was really poor (the waiter was zombified), the meal was heavy in the stomach, with cheap cuts of meat, bones, tasteless starter and plonky wine, and the atmosphere was uncomfortable. An evening which was supposed to be a celebration, and I just want to forget it.

I wanted to like it, too, but all I can say is that I hope my stomach doesn't feel too bad this morning.
It says 'best newcomer prize' in their menus, but that must have been a long time ago. Not since my days as an au pair had I gone to such a poor standard of restaurant - I rather eat at home watching The Simpsons.

Interesting to read some of the comments on this thread...

I know the owner very well and my girlfriend and I regularly go along for the drumming workshops, after which we all sit down and have a meal in the restaurant.

Personally, I love the food but I understand it isn't to everyone's taste. I see what people say about the odd atmosphere as well, but I think that is all part of keeping it very informal.

However, I was at Peace in the Park last saturday and the queues for their food stall were just ridiculous. I don't think I ever saw less than about 25 people queuing all day long, and everyone commented on how good the food was - so they must be doing something right.

Please don't go there! I got really bad food poisoning in summer 2008. It is not worth risking it for the sake of saving a few pounds, it's people's health! Best to eat something nice at home or print a Money Saving Expert restaurant voucher for a BOGOF meal deal, for a meal that you can remember for the right reasons.

UK Mama's is a bizarre place.

The owner is a nice man - but nice doesn't get things done, or keep standards high.

I get the feeling that many years ago it was probably very successful, but those days are long gone. Service is abysmal, and I've never waited two and a half hours for a main course before.

Having not eaten at very many Afro-Caribbean restaurants I have no real benchmark by which to judge the food, but if I was to judge on service, ambiance and environment alone, it would definitely be a big thumbs down from me.

Dont judge Afro Carribean food on that place. There is no comparison. I am of carribean decent and I left in disgust. The manager was quite rude when i told him why we left. If he cant take it he should never have asked me what the problem was. I told him as it is. AVOID THIS PLACE. About time it was shut!

He rang me when we left his restuarant. We left because the food was horrendous. When the main was served we looked at each other and said it smelled horrible and looked as bad. We took a mouthful then told this young working there that we was leaving. He mentioned working with Levi Roots..... the phone was on loudspeaker so my daughter could hear the conversation. We were in hysterics and he told us off for laughing. When i tried to speak he talked over me and said it was his time to speak. How rude. He then asked us to cook our own meal after offering us a free meal. We couldn't believe what we were hearing. The whole experience was bad. Well I never took him up on his offer, but I am on a mission to warn everyone how bad the place is.

I remember going there a few years ago and everything about it was pleasant. The food was a bit heavy granted but I liked the Escoveitch particularly. The fried sweet potatoes and plaintains were tasty accompaniments if a little small in portion size.

Restaurant fined for serving up 'poisonous' curry dish

Magistrate Jacqueline Bevan told the restaurant owner though he was not at the restaurant when inspectors visited, a regime should have been in place to prevent any unsafe food being in the kitchen.

Paul Barber, prosecuting, told the court inspectors visited the specialist African and Caribbean restaurant on July 23 last year after a complaint from a diner who had eaten there the previous evening.

Various food samples were sent for testing at the Health Protection Agency's labs in Leeds and results showed poisonous bacteria in the mutton curry.

Mr Barber said inspectors re-visited the restaurant in October last year, and found its food safety management system was not adequate and the chefs had failed to keep food temperature records.

Dr Ogwudire, aged 43, of Fulwood Road, pleaded guilty to placing unsafe food on the market.

Andrew Dalrymple, defending, explained Dr Ogwudire had to speak to inspectors on the phone when they visited in July 2009 as he was seeing a relative in hospital in Birmingham.

He added this was his first offence after 16 years of running the business, and that the council had previously awarded the restaurant four stars out of five for hygiene.

The court also heard Dr Ogwudire and members of staff had eaten the mutton curry the previous day and had not been ill.

Mrs Bevan fined Dr Ogwudire £1,000 and ordered him to pay costs of £800 and a £15 victim surcharge.

We told him we wasn't happy. But we had the sense to leave the premises. Even the promise of free food, which he even said we could cook ourselves didnt make us want to ever go to that place again. We are of carribean heritage and we expected at least a decent African/Carribean meal, but that wasnt the case. I dont know why that place is still open to be honest. It has to be the worst paid for meal we have ever eaten. Plus we found the boss to be very rude which didnt go down well. Dont ask us if i liked the food and then to argue with me over our opinion. I didnt see the article until after our visit. If I'd have known i woulds never have gone in the 1st place. A freind tried to warn us abut as i had already purchased vouchers we had to see for ourselves. What a mistake. I asked for our money back via telephone message but that was ignored. Honestly......dont go there!

After allowing adequate time for Dr Godson Ogwudire to re-contact us in regards to a possible revisit. I have informed the Star Newspapers of our experiences via fax. Ogwudire also said we could have anything off the menu and let let us know so he could book us in. I rang on more than one occasion but he has decided to screen our calls. The website for UK Mama is a complete farce. It gives you an impression that the place is posher than what it actually is. When you eventually see the premises its a bit of a shock. They pretend the place is fully booked and when you arrive there are plenty of table free. We were there for 2.5 hours before we were served our main dish of slop. We left before the desert. What has been the longest you have been there?

I know you had a bad meal there once, but aren't you taking it to extremes now?

Chill out - most people were put off a long time ago. :)

Perhaps I am. But If I can save one person from food poisoning that's good enough for me.

I had a meal here recently after purchasing a voucher from Groupon.
Everything was very bad; first we got a call about an hour before we went to say that we couldnt go untill 2 hours after our booked time, then when we got there and waited about an hour and half for main course and then another 30 mins for desert. We got put at a rubbish table even though it was empty. The staff didnt have a clue - seriously, food was awful etc etc

BUT If you bought from Groupon it was only like £5 for a 4 course meal for 2 people so its not the end of the world is it!

We also purchased a voucher from Groupon for Radhuni on London Road, I can say everything was amazing!

Its not the price of the meal at UK Mama its the principal. But moving onto better things we went to Radhuni on London Road last week and it was lovely. I took my daughter her b/friend and her friend. We were spoilt rotten. We would definately be going there again. The atmosphere was excellent and the food arrived quickly. We had that much food left we asked if we could take it home. 10/10

No coupons but have you tried ZEENAT on Attercliffe Road. We go there quite a bit for the buffet on Mondays. If you mention them on facebook they do a free draw for Monday buffet for 2. My daughter was picked twice. Try it its less that £8 and the buffet changes each week so it makes it more interesting.

I bought the radhuni voucher too, not had chance to use it yet though. I also bought the thai one a few weeks back which was good, though I am most looking forward to my Aston Martin DB9 voucher!

I avoided the UK MAMA one after hearing previous reviews!

I was really chuffed we'd got an Indian restaurant on London Road when Radhuni opened...unfortunately I had the most bland, lifeless Rogan Josh I've had for many a decade - so disappointing.. btw I had the most memorable meal - for all the wrong reasons - at UK Mama many years go on Valentine's night...it had disaster written all over it from start to finish...I'm frankly astounded it's still open..

They still have the Valentines decorations up. Prob from when u was there a few years ago....... lol x

That place is HORRENDOUS to say the least. I've said too much about that place already. They need to get their act in order and like quick!. In order to make it work they have to admit things are really wrong with the whole restuarant & staff. But to be honest we all know thats not going happen. So I would ask anyone to reconsider buying GROUPON vouchers for this place taking into account the reviews.

Im sorry you didnt enjoy your curry on London Road. We loved ours. How long has it been opened?

I went here with a groupon voucher - very cheap deal and have to say the food was really quite nice. It is so much in need of a make over inside and the waiter was the most bizarre waiter i have ever encountered - just felt it was a shame cos it kinda has potential

Not long..a couple of months maybe...I was gutted cos it's bang opposite my local - the Cremorne - and extremely handy for a post-session curry!! Ok well, if you say you loved it I will give it a second go...I'm always happy to be proved wrong on such important matters :D
Thinking about it, on the night I went on, there were virtually no cooking smells/aromas - spices, garlic etc - coming from the kitchen...which you would expect in such a small restaurant and which I found a bit strange at the time...but then forgot about. Maybe the kitchen was down or something and they were making do. Anyway, thanks - I'll definitely give it another shot!

We're going to the Radhuni this week .......... looking forward to it, and thought I'd check on here for reviews .......... all mainly good :)

However, as with others, I passed on the Groupon UK Mama vouchers ...... didn't think they would be worth the paper they were printed on lol

I agree. I went a few weeks ago and the food was reasonably good (not amazing, but certainly enjoyable). But....

....the waiter seemed like it was his first day on the job and was really struggling (since he was the *only* waiter in the whole place). All the food came out at different times so that you had to eat your main course before you even got the side dishes to go with it (else the main would go cold). It just all seemed a bit chaotic and amateurish. The manager came out at the end and we have a long chat with him - seemed a really nice guy. But I have to say I won't be going back because I felt the service was very sub-standard, and am put off by comments on here about the food being "hit or miss" with miss apparently equalling awful or worse giving people food poisoning?

Also they don't seem to stock 80% of the drinks on the menu! In the end we had to ask them to tell us what they had got, rather than continueing to go through the menu to be told "sorry we don't have that either"!

I went in there for an early bird special a few years ago and had a vegetable stew.

It looked like it had been boiling on the stove for a week, the only identifiable vegetable being courgette (I think) and tasted as if the lid had come off the salt pot.

Halfway through our 'meal' a regular customer came in and ordered from the expensive menu.

We were the only other people in the restaurant and from that point onwards, we were completely ignored, while the waiter grovelled and slimed all over them, to the point where it was becoming nauseating.

Possibly the worst restaurant I've ever been in

Been a few times, the food is ok, not really a great example of African/Caribbean cooking. If you're looking for a fun night with time on your hands and moderate expectations it's ideal.

I went up with two mates recently and really liked it - yeah it was a bit tired inside, but was quite homely and the food was really nice. An African guy in very colourful clothing even taught us the bongos after we'd eaten which was very odd but fun!

Service was a bit slow but much better than being rushed in and rushed out like some other places, gave us time to sink a few more African beers... maybe thats why they do it!

Actually it's because the local BBC news did a very short report from there prior to the England v Nigeria game during the 2002 world cup, as the owner is Nigerian.

I have had experiance at UK MAMA. I had the oppertunity to become an apprentice at the restaurant, not knowing about the experiance other people have had there. During my time there i was given no training what so ever! I was told to set the table's and take orders. I was the only waiter there and been treated as an employed proper waiter with experiance before in the industry. The owner would call me to the kitchen downstairs and tell me to go to the tables where people were eating and have a conversation with them about where they'd come from ect.. I myself wouldn't like to be irritated by a waiter asking about my life when trying to have a nice evening out. The owner told me that the training providers would be in touch with me and ring me at his restaurant while im there, after a couple weeks i became curious about the training provider and so i called them myself.

The owner of the place had never informed them of an apprentice having started and yet wanting to pay me the normall apprentice wage of £2.50 per hour i worked the unsociable hours of 5 till 11:30. Sounds abit dodgey right?! I did however sort this out with the training provider and was given full pay. The manager was rude, disrespectfull and aggressive to his employee's and to the costumers who disliked his food. Reducing one woman there to tears.

The new waiters there may be a little slow because proper training and attention is not given by the manager, who also doesnt explain himself but instead thinks you can read minds :suspect: ..

Most all the food on the menu is from frozen which he has made himself, the amount of soft drink there is discusting, the tall narrow glass is filled to the top with ice then about 10% full with drink. In the few weeks i worked there before quitting the beer was never a wide range like on the menu it only consists of red stripe and 2 others.

I wouldn't eat there myself !!

Myself and partner have used this restaurant for years,we have had birthday and anniversary meals there with no problem. Infact when we cancelled my birthday meal 4 years ago {as my mother passed away on my birthday),when i did eventually go the owner met us with flowers and was extremely nice, i love the personal touch there and have always enjoyed the food.

While dealing with some other stuff, I was discussing this place with Gordon Ramsay's production team a few weeks ago. They said they'd had floods of people contacting them with similar horror stories about Uk Mama - hoping that they'd be featured on Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

Having eaten there myself - and seen downstairs in the kitchen, I can confirm that it is, without doubt, the most bizarre dining experience I have ever had - and when you've eaten out as much as I have, that's saying something!

The only surprise, to me, is how it manages to stay open.

I have read the other comments in this thread and obviously realise that people will have different experiences, i have been to some restaurants that have come highly reccomended and not been happy with either food or service. And one right doesnt cancel out anything i was just giving my opinion.

I also know this guy and I'm surprised he is still open too, I'll not say why on a public forum. I've eaten there once and like other posters have said everything tastes the same.

The thing that winds me up the most tho is as an African/caribbean person I have been brought up on some delicious food and this food is not at all authentic and you are not tasting caribbean food at it's finest.

There are No resteraunts in Sheffield serving authentic carribean food however the Earl pub does on a friday, If you want authentic I would suggest trying there.
