During the 1950s, my cycling days, we used the ' Sturmey Archer ' Three or Four speed hub gearing. On the opposite side of the hub either a dynamo or back pedal brake could be incorporated.
To change gear you usually back pedalled whilst flicking the changer switch.
However I remember hearing about a Fixed Wheel Hub gear changer being made but I never had a look at one, One great advantage of this would have been to reduce your leg movements.
Did this fix wheel hub gear changer ever come to fruition? or does anyone use one?
Answer found on the Sturmy Archer Web Site. Well worth a visit.
