Hi

I am wanting to take my sister away for a couple of nights to London for her birthday to see the sights but as I have never been, I don't know of any good but cheap central London hotels.

I would be really grateful for any suggestions and or details. Also, does anyone know what the cheapest way to get there is as I have looked at the train costs and they range from anything like £20 single to £45 return?

Any info would be really useful.

Try midland Mainline, me and my friend went on one of their offers just before Christmas... both of us for £20. You have to book on a definite train, but it's cheap enough.

Also, for hotels try the travelodge/ibis/premier type things. They aren't usually in central london but a tube pass is cheap enough.

Can't help with the hotels I'm afraid, but Midland Mainline are currently doing an offer of £15 return trains to London, until the end of March.

If you check out their website at http://www.midlandmainline.com/DisplayPromotion.asp?PromotionID=49 you will find the details of the promotion.

I once went on a coach trip to London, which included 2 nights stay at the Tower Hotel (just by Tower Bridge). I know it only cost me about £100 for the lot, unfortunately I can't remember which coach company it was! Sorry.

Hope you have a great time. x

Sorry but such things do not exist.

You will find some flea wridden hoppits in Bayswater which will be in the cheaper end of the London market, but still not cheap.

As feargal says your best bet is Travel lodge type places. You pay for the room not per person, you know exactly what you are getting because they are all the same and they are clean.

There are some central London ones but they tend to be a bit pricier (still cheaper than hotels). Don't be afraid of staying out West because the transport links are good and cheap. About 9 months ago a family ticket for 4 people for the day was £8.50. That covered overground and underground trains and buses.

The following links should be useful.

I have one piece of advice for you with regards to London hotels... you get what you pay for.

Don't go for a cheap hotel, I made this mistake last year and paid dearly. The room was awful and my wife ended up with bites on her legs. The furniture was really old and the en-suite was just falling apart. All this for a central hotel at £65 per person per night.

We almost just left and used another hotel! Your best bet would be to use a national company like Ibis or Holiday Inn's and expect to pay £150-£200 for the room/s...

Good luck!

I can reccomend the old GLC building behind the london eye. It's now owned by travelodge or holiday inn. But as the building is listed they have been unable to butcher the rooms down to the size of a cupboard.
As mentioned earlier - there are no "cheap" london hotels (although Youth hostels are worth a try), but its in a great spot, has big rooms and is nowhere near the most expensive.

If you can wait until easter, London School of Economics (LSE) let out their student accommodation. From under £50.

Check it out here:

I went to London about 18 months ago with my (now ex) girlfriend, and we stayed here -

http://www.travelstay.com/pages/RegentsPalaceHotel.htm

The hotel was in a good location. By booking on the travelstay webiste I got us the room for around £60 if I recall correctly. The hotel was decent - not plush but certainly not a dump and we got breakfast included. When I got there and looked at the prices of the rooms we should have been paying £120 for that room, so we made a good saving on the travelstay website. Have a look and see if it's still the same.....

We got a "two-some" train ticket from Midland Mainline which involved pre-booked seats and train times but it was no problem and cost us around £20.

If you don't mind leaving the booking of hotel rooms to the last minute. I have always found the following website to come up trumps.

www.laterooms.com

A good place I've found to stay in is the Best Western Corona hotel in Victoria . I've stayed there a couple of times , and not
only is it relatively cheap for Central London , it's clean, comfortable and within reach of both Pimlico and Victoria tube stations.

Their best rate is £55 a night if booked through their website

Thanks everyone, there's some really useful links I'm going to have a look at. I had looked at the 2-some travel ticket and it is probably what I'll go with as it seems the most reasonable.

Thanks again !!!!

I go to London quite often and I always book with Priceline when I need a hotel. It's a bit confusing the first time you use it but the savings are definitely worth it! And it is very good for last minute travel.

Here's a detailed guide with screenshots and everything on how to use Priceline properly. Priceline UK guide (http://www.hotukdeals.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t4548-.phtml).

To give you an idea I usually stay in a 4 star hotel in Kensington for £35-£40 (price per double room not per person). This weekend I am staying at a Hilton 4 star for £50.

Not bad hey! :)

I don't know if it will help, but if you don't mind hanging on to (nearly) the last minute, then Thistle Hotels (www.thistleauctions.com) have a weekly online auction of some of their rooms. The auctions run for a week and close on Tuesday (7pm-ish) for the forthcoming weekend. Currently, £91 will get you 2 nights in one of their places, but as the deadline approaches, the prices rise. I got lucky once for one of their Kensington ones - a full suite for 2 people/2nights for £140, which aint half bad.

I stayed in the
PEACE HEAVEN
3 Creswick Road,
Acton,
London.

Really good clean hostel not far from the centre. I think I paid £20.00 per night. More like a travellers hostel but really clean and friendly, would defiantly go again.
