View Full Version : Which church to take my daughter to?
Does anyone on here attend the church on nursery st. It's a New Testament of God church. I have just got back from Jamaica and I attended church once there with a friend. It was a surreal experience for me as the only churches i have been to you have to be quiet, sing boring songs etc. In Jamaica people were singing, dancing, crying, speaking in tongues. It was quite emotional. I promised my friend I would try and go to church and I just want to find a church like this.:)
Plain Talker 15-12-2007, 00:19 St Thomas's which meets in the philadelphia centre near the old royal infirmary are a church where the gifts of the spirit manifest.
I understand the New Testament Church Of God also are this type of church.
smileyjiver 15-12-2007, 10:34 I don't know if it is still there or not but the Sheffield Community Church used to meet in the old Quaker building behind Bankers Draft and they were always the happy, clappy type meetings.
There's one near Park Square roundabout too. There's always a great turnout judging by the amount of people I see going in all in fancy hats and things.
ukstudent 15-12-2007, 13:35 Try the one at the mega centre. Its centred around young people and is very lively and modern so I've heard.
louisbourg 15-12-2007, 16:15 yes i am sure nursery street church will suit your needs ..... my brother has been a member there for many years , and he loves it there

fellsman 15-12-2007, 16:25 Why do other people worry so much about who goes to church and who doesn't?
If it raises your spirit then that's great.
If you were forced to go when you didn't want to; that isn't so good.
Sounds like a lot of fun to me. Singing, meeting others.
Take from a religion what you need at a certain point in your life.
Me; I'm not a church goer. I just believe in whoever or whatever made this world, did a good job. I enjoy seeing a sunrise or a sunset. Wild geese flying over the fields. It's up to each and everyone to make our short time on this planet as pleasanter an experience as possible.
If no one is hurt then religion can be great. At times ......
Chill a bit and go somewhere nice in your head.
We all need positive experiences.

Hope City Church at the Megacentre.
Nothing worse than being at a church and having a talking, annoying, child. We were at the candlelit carol service at the cathedral the other night, and there were far too many children who wouldn't be quiet.
It was such a nice evening except for the kids. Keep them away until they can keep quiet for a long enough time.

so Jesus famous quote in the bible was "Suffer the children to shut the heck up" was it, and not "Suffer the childen to come unto me?"
Children are as much part of a congregation as the adults.

Not when they are whinging and moaning and ruining the magical experience for others. Church should be for over 12`s IMO.

Send them all to the workhouse while you bask in your own glory:hihi:
RE: SPRUCE AND HOOK
Please reread original post. I asked about lively churches not boring ones where children are made to be quiet. i bet you two would never go to church in Jamaica. i'm sure the happy and joyful way the people I saw celebrating their faith would seriously offend your eardrums. A partial quote from one of my favourite films,Dogma. "some people celebrate their faith, other people mourn it!":)

.....what?
tomjerry 16-12-2007, 13:47 St Thomas Philadelphia is a very lively and welcoming Church. Services at 10.30am every Sunday. There's a Carol service at 6.30pm tonight if you can make it.
.....what?
If you are happy with something why wouldn't you want to show it? Why would you want to spend every service sitting like you are at a funeral?
Everyone is entitled to follow their religion in their own way. Some like to sing, clap and celebrate it with a loud colourful group, others like a more peaceful experience. Nothing wrong with either, unless of course you're stood on my doorstep on a Sunday morning trying to find out why I haven't yet let God into my life, attempting to make me feel guilty and telling me I'll go to hell etc etc blah blah. :)
In my opinion, Spruce, Hook and Michdia can do what they want with their religion and enjoy their own experiences in the way they choose. No need to start ridiculing each other because one wants to sing and clap and another wants to sit quietly and peacefully. Just don't go to each other's churches. :)
I give this thread another few replies before the fight starts. :hihi:
Edit: Great post by Fellsman by the way.

There's a difference between enjoying some fantastic music from a local junior school choir and having it ruined by a few children who can't stop talking (would you stand for it at the theatre or the cinema?) and going to a boring church.
I suspect that breast cancer care would take great offense at having their candlelit service called 'boring'.
I agree with farmboy, everyone is entitled to their own way. I bet certain people on this thread are the kind of people that moan about childrens noise even though they choose to go to places they know there will be children.

I work in a school! There's just a time and place for everything, and at a special carol service I don't think there's a need for children who can't keep quiet.
I obviously never asked about your type of church, Hook and Spruce so why are you even continuing to post on this thread.
Thank you to everyone else's constructive posts. :)

Quite different to one of those mosques you're so fond of eh PT? They even ban women from those!

We are discussing Churches, not Mosques, thank you, and, regardless, your comment is erroneous, as I know plenty of mosques where women are welcome.

But don't forget - without children the churches have no future. Instead of resenting the 'noise' they make, why not look in fondness at the gifts we have been given by God to help our world become a better place? By 'exiling' children from certain services we are not teaching them or giving them a full range of experiences from which they can choose their own path.
caronlel 17-12-2007, 11:18 It's obviously true when they say "never discuss politics or religion" - seems like both cause wars when even an innocent question which started this thread ends up in a free for all slanging match.
Now I know for sure why I don't do either.....

They do say that, it's true. Mind you, there's nothing like either subject for evoking responses, educated or otherwise! :)
