View Full Version : Who would be interested in a new house style club night on a sat
MaisonEvents 08-02-2005, 01:56 AM We are thinking of starting a new night on saturdays for funky vocal uplifting house, as there really is very little around apart from scuba and hussle @ zero.
Comments and suggestions of venues and decent house DJ's would be welcome.
neiltdj 08-02-2005, 09:51 AM Sounds good - Sheff really needs to get back to having a good time. Where is the venue? Who are you? And where do I send a CD? I have been playing round sheff for over 7 years now!
sheffbag 08-02-2005, 10:18 AM Get in touch with Steel city promotions, they have just been doign a night at Banus but it was wrong night to run it (Thurs) so wasnt successful but DJ's are quality
Rich ya da man
scottf 08-02-2005, 11:05 AM If this is the same people who put on maison down south then get your ass's up here - you would make a killing in sheffield with some of the lineups you guys have!!!!
Delboy71 08-02-2005, 11:21 AM Sounds good to me!!

Hi, not sure which venue yet looking at a couple. I have done events for 14 years only a couple if sheffield though.
I am new to the forum, how do i get your email to send my my address to send me a cd dont want to post it up here
sheffbag 08-02-2005, 11:31 AM do another post then you can send private messages and include your address in that
MaisonEvents 08-02-2005, 11:42 AM ok will work that one out bit later, need to have 5 posts before will allow me
What has happened to Sheffield's nightlife?
In the late 90s the city was thought of as one of the best nights out in the North, and people travelled from all over the country to spend Saturday evening in Sheffield. But we don't seem to have moved with the times, and in my opinion as popularity for trance music wanned this city died a death too.
So what are we left with now? A handful of "late" bars, usually closing around 12.30, that charge an entrace fee just for the privilage of that extra hour, one or two half-decent clubs that seem to be loosing their way in a haze of R'n'B, and a load of crap cheesy venues where the old tarts and scally blokes go to grope each other on the dance floor.
I think it's a great idea to start up a new house night in Sheffield. This city desperately needs one and I'm sure it would be an instant hit. It's such a shame that Bed isn't available to be used as a venue any more - that was a great club but sadly I believe they're turning in into the entrance hall for a massive new student complex off London Road.
MaisonEvents 08-02-2005, 11:55 AM I totally agree, i have been here for 10 years and seen the sad decline. Between you, me and the rest of the forum there is plans to open a new club (sadly not my plans!) and if we get this new night off the ground then who knows.
I need to know of any spaces that could be used for a night, not just clubs but maybe social club buildings, even warehouses that i can approach.
I think the youth arent into what you and i might call a good house music night which has led to the decline, but i am sure there are enough of us left who are!!
scottf 08-02-2005, 12:03 PM sheffield city council have shut clubs and forced people into crap bars that shut late- at the same time refused licences to many new bars- they are trying to stop trouble in the city centre by stopping people going out drinking!!!!
Sheffield has 50,000 students that are frankly bored as hell!!!
Hang on a tick - I'm only 22-years-old so hopefully I still class as 'youth'? I can't have degenerated that much surely?
*****Dashes to a mirror and frantically begins checking for wrinkles*****
Actually I think you're right in that today's 16 and 17-year-olds seem more into R'n'B and chart music than they used to be, and the students will dance to any old crap as long as they're p****d enough. But I'm sure that with young professions in their 20's who remember what a good house night feels like (and we do get the occasional reminder from Hed Kandi) they'll be a huge market for any new events.
Especially if something was happening at the weekend. The choice on a Saturday night is so dire at the moment that it's almost tempting not to bother, but the weekend is the only time us working lot get to let our hair down.
There are a hell of a lot of disused factory buildings and warehouses in Sheffield, which could be turned into a similar set up to Gatecrasher One/Republic, but it's finding on close enough to the city centre that could be tricky...
KATIEB_23 08-02-2005, 02:07 PM ME! ME! ME!
(And all my friends)
I am sick of hearing "Sheffield's just not as good since Bed closed down" from everyone I meet.
I will watch this space with anticipation...
5_HATS 08-02-2005, 03:21 PM There is a definate lack of venues to choose from in Sheffield and as a promoter myself I know how hard it can be to find a decent suitable one.
Obviously times will change and I am sure things will start to get better.
We are currently using the Everyone Centre on Broadfield road, whcih is basically a community centre and not a club but in my opinion is a nice venue, whcih can hold about 350-400 people.

If you all breathe in at the same time...
halesworth 08-02-2005, 05:34 PM Yeah would definitely be interested. Sheffield is lacking the house music and not all students can cope with the cheese and r'n'b, despite copious amounts of alcohol. Something on a saturday, not overly expensive would be cool, as everyone just seems to end at 11 :30 on a weekend. Bring back the house music!there's definitley enough of us left for it to work and as a 19 year old student im slowly but surely converting my friends!
robbie 08-02-2005, 09:16 PM could be good as long as you get the right crowd in....
MaisonEvents 09-02-2005, 12:43 AM As this is the first time i have used the forum i am almost overwhelmed with the positive response to this idea.
The good news is we have shortlisted about 8 venues now and provided we can find one that feels right and is open untill miniumum 2am not too expensive and has a decent sound system then we are on!
In that case will need people to help with promotions reasonably priced local printing, club dressers and local DJ's for possible residency... anyone out there?
We may start this as a once a month to gauge its viability but plan to get some bigish name dj's to get cracking with!
Anymore feedback is more than welcome.
Cheers
mattjanes 09-02-2005, 06:26 AM Sheffield went downhill when Gatecrasher soldit's soul to the devil and started running awful pop nights for students.
Incidentally, I am a student, and I don't know why the big clubs run nights like that. Everyone I know has their music preference - whether it be Hard House, Funky House, Drum and Bass, Hip-Hop, or even Metal and Ska-Punk - I know that it doesn't include dodgy pop RnB tripe.
One of the reasons I came to Sheffield was for the nights out - which I am sorry to say is not what it was.
It seems these days people are willing to put up with poor music in return for 50p vodka shots...

That s very impressive - most Sheffield promoters are finding it difficult to get one weekend venue let alone 8 possible ones!
moongarden 09-02-2005, 10:39 AM the arches on the whicker is my favourite venue - fingers crossed waiting for the work there to be completed without any more building hiccups
i agree with mattjanes - it has to be about the music
looking forward to planet zogg on saturday!!

Thanks! We are keeping an open mind about venues and not just looking at clubs thats how we have got to 8. It may end up being a 'house' rave in a warehouse!

I say again - sounds good to me!!
Seems to me that the best house nights in Sheff are now on a Friday whcih doesn't really fit in with the needs of me and my friends (we travel over from Scunthorpe and some of my friends work Saturdays). A good alternative to Hed Kandi would be cool. Used to go to Bed and back in the early 90's when it was Palais. Sheffield was really cool and still is,just need to get the right night sorted on a Saturday. Good luck and keep us posted!!
welchiewelch 09-02-2005, 02:25 PM Good luck to anyone doing a new night but a funky vocal house one ? Enough already. I'm sick of seeing funky vocal house on posters and flyers - what the dickens does it mean ? That only music with a 4/4 rhythm that has an element of funk and a vocal will be played.
JoaquiNation 09-02-2005, 03:05 PM Hey up Welchie, I reckon if the Phonetics boys hada got together with Scuba for a once-a-month access all areas, then nobody woulda beaten it for miles.
Not too relevant to the discussion, but just an opinion I thought I'd share
something that does kill Sheffield nights are the no-more-alcohol-past-2am licences which our great Sheffield City Council seem to like ( I reckon they just wanna encourage their 'football and pies on a Saturday afternoon followed by binge drinking and a feight' mentality - proper Sheffield)
Well up for all of this.... especially if the emphasis is on fun, eg garlands. More 6am licences as well.
kilauea 10-02-2005, 01:54 PM I'd be right up for this - possibly even DJ'ing if I could squeeze it with work and you wanted me.
I'll watch this space....
LounginJ 10-02-2005, 03:21 PM Hey Peppermint Loungin' have got a night on the 22nd at the room fka the fez, that anyone who is into their house should definetly check out!
it'll be a very special one off this month -
Sonny Wharton (Renaissance) VS The Beat Monkeys (Chibuku)
6 Decks, 3 Mixers and 4 CDJ's
Firas (Pin-Up)
Dan Henniker (Peppermint Loungin')
......all in the imtimate surroundings of the room
LounginJ 10-02-2005, 03:37 PM People need to start supporting the small nights in bars and clubs around sheffield that are playing house, breaks, electro etc because all good nights start small and then build up from there! It ****** me off when people, especially students, just go to crasher or kingdom because 'that's where everyone goes' broaden your horizons sheffield!

Damn right! And come to Transmission Vs SUBversion on't 19th feb at Everyone Centre. Not a bit of cheese in sight.
the fonz 15-02-2005, 02:16 PM IMO we need some more big name djs at some more big nights, supporting local nights and djs is great but we need the big names to bring people to sheffield.
Ive been all over and although places like Crasher and Bed had their faults they brought people from all over the country to see big names djs on our doorstep. Once places get popular it makes sense to mix in a bit of local talent.
I think that maybe funky house has had its its day, and that places like UG have the right idea by providing a real mix of musical tastes, i also think that maybe zero sufers at times for not having two rooms.
gregcdj 15-02-2005, 02:49 PM I DJ.
I used to play for Pin-Up and now I play for Hustlin but am always up for new adventures..
PM me your email address and Ill send you a CD or two.
leddi 15-02-2005, 10:43 PM Sheffield will never have good night life so long as students think that these nights are purely put on for their benefit. I'm sorry to say it because i'm a mature student but the feeling i get when i go out is that i'm in the way, and its my home city!!
so er yes a new house night would be good, bring back Chris and James!!
