Hello knitting group  I've been inspired by you all and some of the lovely yarns that are around at the moment, and I think I'm going to have a go at something simple! I used to knit a little bit years ago (was taught by my nan!), I know the basics, cast on, knit, pearl, etc, I can work to a simple pattern. I am thinking of doing something like a nice scarf to start with, can anyone recommend something? I've looked on the other scarf thread on here but I think they are too ambitious for me just yet!

Also, I remember a problem I used to have and wondered if anyone else ever experienced this. Sometimes I'd be knitting away and then the wool would start to kind of squeak across the needles, really goes through you! The stitches weren't too tight either. My mum said I could be holding onto the needles to tightly and making the wool too warm..... anyone else or is it just me!!

Hello  You want to be careful round this knitting group, there's a bit of a sock fetish going on:D
As for the scarf, I made one up - a friend gave me a ball of wool as a present, I got a couple of co-ordinating colours in the same wool and just did 2 by 2 rib, changing colour every few inches until the wool ran out! Dead easy, and nice and snug :)
I'd advise you not to use one of the fluffy fancy yarns (the ones that look hairy and get sold in scarf kits) as they're not very nice to knit with and I imagine it would make you neck sweat a lot (I'm doing a teddy in it...).
Head down to the Wool Baa and ask Jill for advice too, then you can come away with some lovely yarn to make it with :)

Hello

I started by just knitting a garter stitch scarf, but it was a bit boring to knit. My second knitting project was the Irish Hiking Scarf (http://www.helloyarn.com/irishhikingcarf.htm). It's really easier than you think, the cables are so much easier and make it more interesting when you are knitting it.

Hi all! When are the meets? I might just pop along....

I love the Irish Hiking Scarf, but it looks really scary for a first attempt! I haven't knitted for years! And I've never done cable.

I think I will pop along to the Wool Baa and have a chat to the lady there, I'd like a little project for when I'm off over xmas.

I've actually just printed off the pattern for the Irish Hiking Scarf and it's not as bad as it looks. However I've not done cable before, I could do with a little demonstration! Do you think the lady at the Wool Baa would be able to help. Think I'd have a real sense of achievement if I managed to knit that, it's gorgeous!

Oh, want to go now.... why does work have to get in the way of everything?!

I'd go for a striped scarf like this one (http://brooklyntweed.blogspot.com/2007/04/noro-scarf.html), it's all rib (knit one purl one) and the yarn does all the work. You could use a plain (read "cheaper") colour for one stripe and a colour changing yarn for the other.

Thats beautiful! So effective with the colour changing yarn.

I'm sure the lady at The Wool Baa would be happy to help (note the term lady, Wheezy....here is someone showing the respect I deserve....:D). I am not in tomorrow though as it is daughter no.3's birthday and I am having the day off to run myself ragged! Back in on Tuesday and open until 6.30 that night.

Hi Jill:wave: I came in on Saturday! I hadn't read your post. The other nice lady helped me out though. I bought two lots of wool. Couldn't wait to get home and get started. Anyway I'm cast on and away with the Irish Hiking Scarf and I have to say I'm rather proud of myself already!! My sister has already lined me up to knit her one when I've finished so I am sure I will get to meet you in person one day!

The next one is this Thursday (20th) at the Wool Baa from 7pm. I believe mince pies and mulled wine are to be served aswell as the normal fayre:)

The next Sunday one is on 6th January from 11am. The Sunday meetings are hosted by Peakwool and are most definitely the place to go if you like to see lots of unusual wools - her garage is the 8th wonder of the world:lol:
