After looking through Raverly, I've fell in love with a sock pattern Snicket Socks (http://magknits.com/Sept06/patterns/snicket.htm) :o It's looks far too hard for me though.

So, if I was to start on socks. What would an easy pattern be for a newbie sock knitter and not so good normal knitter? I like the look of the Monkey socks, are they an easy one to start with?

Looks like I will be buying some sock yarn at the knitting meet next week :D

For my first pair I got some self patterning yarn (the Wool Baa has loads of different sorts to choose from) and a freebie basic sock pattern (Regia has one or I have one you can have if you like). This will introduce you to the basics of socks and the use of some self patterning/ striping or pretty verigated yarn will produce some fantastic looking socks with only a little bit of effort...unless you fancy the challenge of something harder:D

Wouldn't you like to try gloves instead first? I've heard they are easier than foot coverings

I have to admit, I like the idea of the fetchings and do have some wool I could use for them. But not sure if they would be useful after knitting them though. After spending all that time knitting the booga bag, and it's about as useful as a chocolate bucket, I'm very reluctant to knit something that I don't think will be used (despite starting a second bag, that is probably useless too!)

You could always give the chocolate bucket to someone as a Christmas present, someone else might find it useful (and you've got to admit that it is pretty). Does what we knit have to be useful anyway, there are lots of hobbies out there where you end up with pretty things with no usefulness. (I'm not going to pick on one as it will turn out to be someone's other major interest and then I'll feel bad)

What is it with the appeal of fingerless gloves anyway? (other than you get to cast off early) I can see that I'd be able to knit in them, major advantage there, but if it's cold enough to wear them then it's probably too cold for me to knit.

I never understood fingerless gloves, but I have the feeling I may need some on Monday - we're playing Christmas Carols outdoors in Bolsterstone (6pm if anyone wants to come!), and they might slow the freeze down a bit :(

No! Don't start with Snicket Socks! Seriously! They are a bit boring and it is a bit of a fiddly pattern. I ripped mine out after a bit as it was just crap. Move onto Snicket socks after you've done a few other pairs :)

Are those the ones with the mistakes  :hihi:

I think LisaH is right. Do some ordinary socks first so you get to grips with them. There are some lovely sock yarns around and the faux fair isle is brilliant because the change in pattern and colour encourages you to knit further. Monkey is a great pattern for your second socks and Jaywalker is another good pattern (but because it's really tight you have to cast on a lot more stitches which then makes it longer to knit a pair).

It's great that you're on the slippery sock slope, though!

I'm planning to be there - its just up the hill for me, and it sounds nice and festive!!

I know I am off topic here, but will you be taking mince pies and mulled wine. AND while I'm on the festering talk, will we be very festering at The Wool Baa on Thursday? I do hope so :D:D

I 'm liking the Regia Kaffe Fasset line, I love the deep colour stripes. I'm convinced, I'll start on a simple sock pattern first, before attempting any others.

Doodle,

Welcome to the world of socks. I've just done a pair in the Kaffe Fasset range whilst I was on holiday. If you like your socks to match be very careful about matching the yarn before you start, I thought I'd got the two balls in the right place, but as I got further on I realised that I hadn't and even now I'm unsure whether the two balls match anyway. I started mine from the toe and worked up, both at the same time. I'm not advocating you do that, top down will be enough to get used to just knitting socks.

There is such a huge resource of information and expertise on this forum, I'm sure if you have any problems you'll soon get some answers. Good luck and enjoy, once tried never let off the hook!

No, we got soup last time (mulled wine would be better though!). I think we'll be heading off to a pub pretty sharpish after we finish, it's perishing up there!
Thursday could be difficult, I've got a retirement do to go to - but it is possible to do both...
I haven't done any socks for ages, might have to get some Feelings in!

They are lovely turra21, even if they don't match. :)
