View Full Version : BT Broadband
Guys and Gals
This issue is driving me nuts:
I have BT Broadband Basic and my email is scrwed up. It seems that BT Broadband Basic only provide INTERNET access NOT email. This has rendered all 5 of my emails addresses useless, as i can only recieve not send. BT say that i need to upgrade to the £26.99 a month package to get email, but i dont want to do this. Does nayone know a way to get round it? Or if i do have to upgrade to the £26.99 a month if my other (Non BT) email addresses will work????
Do they offer any Webmail facility? If they do you may be able to access it that way, or set autoforwarding on to another provider who may allow POP3 access that your email client (Outlook at a guess) could then connect to.
not having that extra package should only disallow you from accessing your BT email, not others. What are the other email providers you use?
Freeola & Wanadoo.
I can RECIEVE from all accounts fone...but NOT SEND.....
With BT Business Broadband they sent a mail to subscribers ages ago telling us of this - that receiving mails would be OK but that for any sending mails you'd need to register the 'external' ISP mail servers that you'd use.
I'm surprised that this limitation exists - are you sure you don't have a message from BT with SMTP details in?
Joe
Hmm ... i always thought that internet provider emails came free anyway?
Who'd pay extra for a stupid email account?
Are you using Outlook Express for your mail?
Most mail acccounts can only be freely accessed for retrieving mail. To send mail you either need to have an ISP that will allow you to send or use someone elses SMTP server, probably with authentication.
Who are your other mail accounts with? Have a check on their sites for mail settings and see if you can use their SMTP server with authentication.

Not with BT BB Basic, you get internet access and that's it. No SMTP services, no newsgroups, no nothing except access to the internet!
Im using Outlook Express.
BT Broadband Basic only provides internet access...no email:
"Question
Why doesn't BT Broadband provide email?
Answer
BT Broadband is an Internet access product. The competitive price of BT Broadband is achieved by providing simple Internet access without some of the value-added services often supplied by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as email and webspace. This means that customers have greater choice when it comes to selecting an email service to meet their needs.
You can still use webmail services with BT Broadband (for example, Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail), but if you have an email account from an ISP this is likely to be affected. For further information click here."
Freeola dont allow it, neither do Wanadoo
steevie/d 07-02-2005, 17:34 i suspect there is somthing wrong with your e:mail settings on out look express worh a try steve...
Skatiechik 07-02-2005, 18:14 You can't send an email via freeserve or anyone elses server for that fact unless you are CONNECTED to them. Granted 9 times out of 10 it will send for all intense of purposes from OE if you trying sending it that way but it will just disappear into space
You need to send via the SMTP server of your provider, and as avalon has said BT Broadband basic do not provide this service.
My suggestion would be to use one of the many companies that provide email services. Try these http://port995.com/ it is a spinoff company from metronet
_Fate_ not every provider internet package comes with an email address, there is a largew majority of people who prefer not to have their ISP tied to their email address incase they decide to change provider.
I see.
Avalon, why dont you just sign up with Hotmail? They now provide 250mb storage space instead of the previous (i think) 10mb. And u can then use it with MSN Messenger. :)
alchresearch 07-02-2005, 20:37 I used to be on dial-up with Lineone and they were the same - they won't relay mail.
I'm now on Blueyonder broadband and although I still have the Lineone account and webspace I cannot FTP unless I go through their dial-up number.
Your best best is to buy a cheap domain name and you can keep the same email address for life and just alter the email provider as and when you change.

I already own two domains but the host will not relay email either, and it costs to move it to another host!
You can run a SMTP server from home. First thing to mention is that you should obviously make sure you dont set it up as an open relay (see below).
There are some things to consider about running a home SMTP server:
1. A static IP address helps alot. If you are purely using the mail server for outgoing mail from the same computer or another computer on your lan then it isnt a huge issue. However if you want to run pop3 (ie: have incoming mail delivered to your mail server) then you really need a static address (before anyone jumps in: yes I know you CAN run a no-ip client but its not good for mail delivery).
2. Some ISPs block port 25, reroute all port 25 traffic through their own SMTP server or deny access to MX records to connecting clients. If BT do any of these, you will have trouble running an SMTP server (decent ISPs will block downstream port 25 and open it up when you prove its not set up as an open relay - but this is BT so the ports are probably wide open).
3. Some mail servers will reject mail if you dont have a valid reverse DNS entry for your IP address. Again, because you're with BT you can forget about getting your RDNS changed. Thankfully few mail servers seem to rely on this now so you shouldnt have too much problems. But if some people don't recieve mail your sending whilst others do then this could be the reason.
If you havent found any of the above too daunting search google for a free smtp server. Again, make sure you dont set it up as an open relay (choose one thats easy to configure and as a minimum allows you to set an allow (IP) sending list and has outgoing server authentication).
Once its running you should check it with a web based open relay tester. You can find one here: http://www.abuse.net/relay.html
As long as the above site doesnt register it as an open relay you can test the server by changing your settings in outlook/outlook express. Assuming you will be running the smtp server on the same machine you are sending mail from you would change the smtp server to "127.0.0.1" (without the quotes).
Now try sending a mail to a webmail account (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc.). If you recieve the mail then your up and running.
I use Bt broadband with out the email thing and there is a way to get round it - just a real pain.
Skatiechik 08-02-2005, 13:39 Thats not the issue stelps, the issue is you can't send via the ISP email address unless you are connected to them. BT Broadband Basic do not provide this feature so it seems.

It was the issue, avalon knows full well it is possible to recieve, if you read the intial post.
The issue is that is not possible to SEND (nothing to do with recieving) unless you are connected to the ISP in question, or an ISP which offers a SMTP service, or an independant email host.
