My dad speaks Italian so I wanted to get him a fab Italian film for Christmas: he was rambling about something the other day saying it was the best italian film ever but I can't remember the name.

Any suggestions?

Am not thinking of the Godfather or Scarface or anything US made. True native Italian cinema....

La Dolce Vita! Anything by Federico Fellini. God I love the Italian language, it's great, I keep saying La Dolce Vita and La Strada to myself now! Haha!

Some would say La Dolce Vita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_dolce_vita).

Indeed! Someone else did!

Bicycle Thieves as Basil suggests, but you might need something more to go on. There is also Raffifi (spelling). Or maybe they mean spaghetti westerns!

Cinema Paradiso is a beautiful film as is Il Postino (although the director is actually English.)

Could it have been Malena? By the same director as Cinema Paradiso I think. That's a good film.

I'd have to say Cinema Paradiso too, fantastic film, really enjoyed it. To be honest though, it is the only Italian film I've ever seen also...
