View Full Version : Applicants for late licences from Sheffield?
The law came into effect today allowing licensee's to submit applications under the new legislation to allow later opening.
Is anyone aware of any pubs in Sheffield that have stated a position on this?
Weatherspoons have stated that they won't be submitting any applications (I think), and another chain have said that they will voluntarily limit times to 0200.
Kristian 18-02-2005, 02:07 Does nobody know anything about this then?
I was rather hoping the 24 hour Asda would be applying; it always annoys me if I can't get a bottle of wine if it's just after 11. I'm often in there at that time!

GimmeSomePK 18-02-2005, 04:32 I'm open late even if Asda aren't!! :D
The feeling i get is that pubs are being cautious at the moment, nobody rushing out and publicly announcing they'll be the ones open latest. As far as i'm aware there is no official policy yet from the the large supermarkets etc. Each one will have to apply on an individual basis, Spar on Ecce road so far know nothing about plans to extend their licence and i'm looking into other places.
Have to see how things go but i may be looking at a career change come November. Until then order your drinks from me as i may be forced into early retirement!!

One reason why no-one is shouting yet could be, and i will give you an example:
Out of the 20+ or so pubs in the Chapeltown/ High green area.
If only 1 stayed open late, how much potential trouble could that cause on the streets. All the area in 1 pub.

the idea is that it would cause less trouble overall as only 19 pubs would kick out at 11.

having lived in high green for 20 years (moved in november) & all my family & friends still living there i can tell you that for years there has been one pub in high green that stays open untill the last person is out of the door, so in all honestly i cant see it causing more trouble than there all ready is.

After time drinking goes on in a lot of pubs all over the place.
This will just legalise it, and Cyclone thats true about having less trouble with staggered times, the point i was making is if everyone was in one pub and it kicked off.
All in all i think it is a good idea, ps Saxon I lived in Chap/High green for 42 years, moving to dinnington recently.
but not everyone would want to carry on drinking, although i see your point that if only 1 pub stayed open late it might be a little busy.
surely though the potential revenue from all the drinkers would soon have the other pubs applying as well, at least until the market forces stabilised and a sensible number were open to any given time.
ps - so now you have the pleasures of the Lord Nelson, the Little Mester and the Squirrel.

And the Lordens
I know of quite a few places in Sheff that have extended hours but don't use them anymore.
The clubs advertised the fact but when it came to 2am everyone went home anyway.

the clubs may stay open, but the bars cannot, which is a rather key difference.

That's the point i was going to make, a club that has nights on til say 4am currently still has to shut the bar at 2am so some people will leave. Obviously there'll be some people happy to stay for the music and others using other forms of chemical stimulation  but i'm sure if a club is open late they'll be the ones to benefit from later licencing.
On the other hand, if more local bars and pubs do go for later hours, even just til say 1-2am, it could take a LOT of trade away from the city centre. I'd personally prefer to stay in pubs and bars til 2am than go to a club, but then i'm not into clubbing but like a drink or 10.... :D

exactly.
I'd much rather stay in a pub with no music until i'm ready to go home than be forced into a late bar (which has to play music) or a club.
