This looks helpful if it is a non-fancy yarn

Would Ravelry help?

(I'm not sure as I haven't had a good look yet - still waiting to be invited but only about a million people left in the queue before me!!) :(

I would also ask other knitters when you meet them. THey all seem to have amazing memories and that could unlock a few names.

I'd work out the wraps per inch first and work out what sort of yarn it was (there's a link here (http://www.woolfestival.com/articles/WPI.htm)that shows you how to do it, tells you what the right needle size would be and estimates how much you'd need for a sweater). I'd then try and work out how much yardage I had, if you can work out how many yards you have in 10g then you know how much you have in total. Then you can find a pattern in the weight of yarn you have that hopefully takes less yardage than you have.
