View Full Version : Goths - whats it all about?
coopster1974 07-02-2005, 13:34 Having watched last nights Coronation Street, I'm in a quandry.
What exactly is a goth? Whats the crack?
Is it about individualism? If so why do they all look alike?
Or is it a fashion of a goth to look like a dishevelled corpse?
Can anyone enlighten me?
Is there anyone or anything that you don't have a problem with :suspect:

Punks, Goths, Check out the `Suicide Girls` official website and see if you are still asking that question coopster
Not posted link because it would be deemed inappropriate.
I dunno but if you go down to Devonshire Green on a Saturday afternoon/evening, hundreds of them gather there, I have no idea why! But they do scare me a bit, as any large gathering of people for no apparent reason would I suppose.

:o when I had to change my Google preferences I thought it must be rude but it seems far removed from
this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/northeast/series1/goths.shtml) version/definition.
They just look like any generation of youngsters trying to assert their identity though not individuality as they all look the same. :D
Nobody's mentioned the vampiric aspirations of the more extreme members of this collection of people
(I mean the beauty and eternal life bit)
MuteWitness 07-02-2005, 14:02 who cares how people dress? let them just get on with it.
Phanerothyme 07-02-2005, 14:06 well, (puts cultural studies hat on)
Goth, aka gothic punk, is a northern phenomenon originating, I honestly believe, in Leeds circa 1982-83.
The style has never been consistent, and indeed in the clubs in london around the late 80s (slimelights, kitkat club etc) showed the goth dress code occupying every point in between New Romantic and Punk.
Goths were, in my day at least, people with the Punk Ethic who enjoyed dressing up a bit, and looking smart, or at least meticulously accesorised. Snakebite and Black was the goth standard drink, and when the Sisters of Mercy split you either went all wussy and started listening to the Mission, or you stuck to your guns and bought the Sisterhood LP, followed by the rest of Andy Eldritch's dark, garbled output.
For most goths I knew, music was secondary (unsurprising really, if you listen to most of it, but I first came accross bands like "The Shamen" (in gorbachev we trust) and "Gaye Bykers on Acid" (stewed to the gills) through goth clubs and friends.
Nowadays, 20 years later, who knows what people identify themselves as goths - I just remember the lame joke on Steve Wright (when he used to be on R1) -
"Old goths don't die, they just looked like they have"
MovingOn 07-02-2005, 14:07 I'll always remember when my poor old gran fell in York. The first person to reach her and help her to her feet was a goth. Gran said she felt a bit intimidated to see this goth girl walking towards her, but she was so friendly that her reticence vanished.
Guess it's a case of judging people for their actions, not their dress mode.
I think this might shed a little light on their attitudes
The Ancient Goths were an east Germanic tribe best known as the destroyers of the classical world. (http://www.playbackstl.com/Current/profiles/goth.htm)
Angry and confused, looking for an identity to can embrace perhaps?

York used to have quite a large gathering of Goths. Well, they've got the architecture haven't they, y'know, for the vampires and the bats! I once went in a nightclub there and they played This Corrosion by the Sisters of Mercy that loud my ears are still ringing - 17 years on!!
It's nice to know that Coronation Street has finally caught up, or caught on. Let me know when Gail starts dressing in white foundation, red lippy and fish nets.
On the other hand, don't, I'm wretching at the thought now.
Youngsters need to find identity with a group. It's not really about being individual personally, but often being individual as a group. When I was a kid you were either a grunge kid (who included a lot of goths) or a scally. The grunge kids generally sat off on a field somewhere and played guitars the scallies wandered around and beat people up.
It's not really strange that kids need to identify with a group when they are at a venerable age. Especially when it's a group that doesn't want to conform to the accepted norm. Dressing like a goth doesn't harm anyone. Taking offence at a goth because you don't approve of their dress sense is a bit daft if you think about it. Everyone goes through some kind of phase when they're that age (well most normal people anyway).
Whitby is the place for all things Gothy.
Ned Ludd 07-02-2005, 16:11 Without wishing to offend any Goths, I do feel they brighten things up a bit(!):P in a society becoming more and more conformist
WallBuilder 07-02-2005, 16:26 I don't have any problem with goths, they may look slightly scary but at least they're fairly quiet. When I was in my late teens early twenties I was very involved in the rock/biker scene and i can remember people thinking we must be horrible basing this purely on the way we looked. Punks and trendies are two groups that I'm not so fond of as they were often obnoxious for the sake of being obnoxious.
I wouldn't agree either that they look like corpses, what's wrong with wearing black and dramatic make-up, I've always thought goth lasses look great.
At last, a thread that can be argued in black and white:clap:
muddycoffee 07-02-2005, 17:14 Can I say that I would rather see some goth girls than girls who all look exactly the same, as mainstream girls do. Goth girls are much more interesting.
Indeed, some of those Goth girls look HOT in black leather.
Sam Miguel 07-02-2005, 19:23 Yes, the toned-down, milder from of goth young women do look attractive.
I went through a pretty Goth/Punk phase when I was in 6th Form :? black nail varnish randomly gothy/punk clothes, 6 inch spikes for hair :?
Now I'm at Uni it's slowly fading away due to lazyness, the big hair spikes appear every now and again, but I dont let it grow nearly as long as I used to... its just too much effort to spend 20mins on your hair in the morning!
my dress sense is still rather alternative, but random casual clothing is slowly creeping in... I find its hard to attract anything but goth's when your dressed gothy/punk... and I want a broad range of women ;)
but some goth women... phwaaahhhh... I must say looking slightly gothy can be a turn on... but some women just take it WAY too far... I'm not a lover of people with 50 piercings :?
Goth girls are by far the sexiest on the planet!
Hmmmmm let me think.
Goth, Chav, Goth, Chav, Goth, Chav, Goth, Chav
I know who i would rather spend time with!.....Goth every time
I spent a short time hanging around with a couple of Goths. They were way too intelligent for me at that age but very nice anyway.
FairyNormal 07-02-2005, 22:17 I was a Goth from around the age of 13 or so. I had the big black hair, the black and purple clothes and the pointed buckle boots from Rebinas (sp). My favourire coat was part of a vicars vestments that my mums church were thowing away. It was floor length, black and fitted in at the waist and flowed out on the floor behind me! I loved it and wore it every where until I became the proud owner of a 1940's black tail coat! I then wore that along with a leather peak cap!
I turned more hard punk in my late teens and had a mohican. I still had the mad hair up until about 2 years ago.
Ahhhh those wre the days!
My kids P**s themselves when they see photos of me when I was about 15 (I'm now 36 and past it!!)

I had one of those. I like the little pocket in the tails, perfect for a bottle of premixed pernod&black (lol)
That was what I liked about the goth thing, is that you could pretty much make it up as you went along as far as a look went.
And yes, goths were reliably the most friendly of the "youth subcultures" that were running at the time even if a few of them were a bit hung up on the occult...

Do you feel enlightened yet Coops ?
coopster1974 08-02-2005, 11:12 Well I was kinda hoping for info into the background behind it. The occult and vampires have been mentioned so I assume the roots are from there.
Doesnt explain why they smell though! Probably the leather. And the secondhand, weestained clothes.

Funnily enough not all goths are actually into vampires. Nor do they all smell of wee!
hope this helps.
I wouldnt feel antagonised by a large group of Goths as much as I would a large group of chavs.
However, the clothes are exceedingly difficult to find/expensive in my experience :P
Where do the goths on here 'shop' ?

This all seems a little harsh / bitter, did your Goth girlfriend just dump you or something ?

Shhhhh the wife will hear you!!!
Maybe I've not come across a wider selection as I should have but the ones I have had the misfortune to stand behind in bus queues, shops have stunk to high heaven, hair & clothes.
Just wanted to know if personal hygiene (or lack of) was part of the get-up.
BTW - your right about the lack of aggressiveness. They may smell (some of them) but the ones I've come across have said please and thankyou.
I always thought it was a kind of mask for ugly middle class kids to hide behind?

Only the guys from what I've seen - some of the birds are quite fit in a way. All that eye makeup really does it sometimes.
jonsastar 08-02-2005, 11:54 There are some fine goth chicks out there, and the ones Ive met never smelled of wee, didnt smell of anything to bad really, cept may be garlic.
I saw a well fine goth chick a while ago, she had a long black leather coat, a tank girl top, tank girl boots, dyed black hair, and dark make up, and a red pleated tartan mini skirt, and almost gave me an instant stifmiester.
very nice

See its probably the ones who cant afford to dress like that that give them a bad name. Black is cool but you gotta be able to wear it well and look good in it - sadly a lot dont.

Agreed
Its possibly the ones that dont change there clothes and sleep in there own vomit that look shabby, and give the better dressed goths a bad name.
The lead singer of the Cure doesnt do much for the goth look nowadays.
And it wouldnt surprise me if he smells of waz.
Some good tunes though.

The vampire occult thing is actually quite an new addition to Goth, following the popularity of Ann Rice, Bram Stoker's Dracula etc.
more info about goth than you will ever need.

not really super "gothy" but for alternative clothing theres obviously Rocky Horrors on Division Street, the shops in the Forum... in Rotherham theres a shop called Mesmerize... theres a place in the markets in Meadowhell, cant remember its name...
there's also various web-sites that specialise in alternative clothing :) personally, most of my stuff is random jeans from TX Maxx and the Forum... t-shirts/tops from gigs, Forum, Rocky Horrors, Mermerize, a shop called Kabooki (used it be in R/ham but is now shut)... I'd say my dress sense is more alternative/punk than goth as I'm just too lazy to be bothered with make-up and random jewelry anymore... it takes time and I'm a lazy student ;)
and I'll note... I DO NOT SMELL OF PEE, I NEVER HAVE DONE, I SHOWER EVERY DAY... MOST OF THE GOTH/PUNK'S I KNOW ALSO DO NOT SMELL OF PEE... :)
some may smell of cannibis, or other things... or smell a bit of BO if they was out getting drunk the night before and crashed at someones house... but thats more of a catagorisation of a student or teenager not goths/punks :P
The trouble with Rocky Horrors is that its nearly all band print stuff now :(
Im all for band shirts, but only when they're meaningful and have a tale behind them!
I mainly wear gigshirts and surfer-wear myself mind (ie. baggy trousers and quiksilver/oneill tee's)
Now what I really want is a bowling shirt :D Ive seen them in Ultravixen in the forum but they are soo expensive its crazy.
Rubysoho 08-02-2005, 19:07 A really good goth clothing site is www.dracinabox.com - I am saving at the moment for the red chinese anime style corset dress, I Luuurrrrvvvveeee it:D

Not wee perhaps but definately stale and bad
Not everyone who wears black is a Goth though, are they?
I did like that shop BTW :)

It's black fabric dye. It's a swine.
Many new black clothes have a perculiar smell, and if you don't get 'em dry PDQ after they're washed, they can turn nasty really quickly. Of course, getting anythingdry in a student gaff can be difficult if you're trying to keep the bills down ;)
Much of the Goth clothing is too delicate to machine wash or wring, so it takes about 3 weeks to dry out :hihi: :gag:
Oh, and it's so expensive that when you get a new article of clothing, it must be worn to death
Very true, I have a black jumper that has been dried too quick meaning its started to rise up annoyingly making it shorter than it should be!
Bah.
I had a major goth phase in my teens but I was more into soft rock than goth pop/rock. Still, I fitted in at Rebels very nicely. ( I still miss that place, met some fantastic people).
I had my hair dyed either pink or bright red, had black leather lace up knee length boots, biker style, full length black vinyl coat, prior to The Matrix, vast amounts of black eyeliner etc and would occasionally go out full dressed as a vampire. This is all circa 1991 - 1996 ish.
Though I dress a little more conservatively these days I still have a streak of the goth in me and it comes through with clothes and my house decorating more than anything.
I buy a lot of clothes from Cleopatra in M'hell and gothic_touch on e-Bay, normal for me to wear a flouncy gothic style shirt with jeans and boots, often for work too.
I had a more dedicated goth friend who slept with his arms crossed over his chest, wore black and white make-up every day and smelled of patchouli every day - even his house keys smelled of it. He'd wear his tails jacket and high collar shirts for college back in those days, never attending lectures and smoking in the students union all day. He listened to Sisters of Mercy etc, we got on despite our obvious music dissimilarities.
Those were the days!
Is this (http://www.gothic.uk.com/acatalog/DRAGON_LOO_SEAT.html) your sort of thing then, Zebra?
Got to say I do like it. Something worth considering in the next house.
My current bathroom is entirely non gothic in a rather silly and frivolous manner.
I shall definitely bear that in mind for future loos :D

SatanInHeels 14-02-2005, 08:32 Very difficult to find even remotley gothic clothing to fit the more pregnant shape i am finding...
not that i would call myself a goth, just a little different ;)
camden market and the surrounding shops sell some great clothes if you dont mind travelling to london.. could have really shopped there if i didnt look like a tellytubby gone wrong at the mo. X
o yeah, saturday afternoonish round devvy green etc... kiddy corp is on at corporation so there tends to be a bit of a gathering in the area surrounding.
Strix - well done, bright candy pink with hippy beads n stuff at the window and voile curtains by the bath. It's hilarious and tragic all at once.
Satan - you could try gothic_touch on e-Bay, their sizes are pretty good, they go right up to obscenely huge from ridiculously petite. I think most of the stuff I have would probably fit a bump if I had one.
Fairydreams 15-02-2005, 15:40 Goths girl examples:
http://www.livingdeadgirls.co.uk/
Not for the faint of heart ;)
bexy_babe 15-02-2005, 15:45 a goth is usaly a person who is into rock bands, wears black clothes and and is into piercings. people offten get bulled or pushed out for being goths but it shouldent matter wot you look like or what your into.
xx
Not one mention of the March Violets, Sex Gang Children, Rosetta Stone, Bauhaus, Southern Death Cult, Nephilim.....pah!
:)
Back in the days when I had cheekbones, there was - and probably still is - always a huge debate about what 'Goth' is. It was a very clique-driven 'movement', with the cool kids and the outsiders. As with any youth/music/alternative lifestyle...it became more about the best outfit than the music. The last time I really knew what was going on, traditional guitar-driven goth was giving way to Darkwave electronica. I guess that was in the late 90's.
People who get the image down look stunning - then there are those that try and fail and sit on the City Hall steps (or used to). :P Heh....
weazel05 11-03-2005, 15:44 I find that goth culture is much more inviting that mainstream society. I have only been to the corp a few times but i felt less intimidated and more relaxed than i ever would in places like kingdom etc.
Also from my experience goth's may look intimidating or wierd but has anyone really had any bother from them?. The comment about please and thankyou made me laugh because members of other cultures in britain have never heard of the words.
Alot of the time it seems the goth's are on the recieving end of any abuse. I think in a world where we amount to nothing other than a tax pig to others that having a firm identity to stand behind is a good thing.
Goth's are so for many reasons. Not all of them like the music perhaps, maybe prefering dress style or literature. Others may love the music and enjoy drinking. A small portion of the culture may be into satanic worship but i must stress you dont have to worship the devil to be a goth.
I mean come on who really needs earache are the no hopers that sit on street corners, smashing public property intimidating the elderly and being an outright pain in the backside. My main point is we fear and ridicule that which we do not understand and if half the people in this world even read a single sentence relating to goth culture they would find themselves looking the lemon for their short sighted and shallow view of a very diverse culture of people.
Rant over lol.
alsvartra 13-11-2006, 15:34 gesh seriously some of you need to hang out with some real goths! we got attitude sexual looks we dont take **** your local pussies maybe but they deserve it, you seriously need to get in the real world here!

nikonuser 13-09-2011, 14:30 Most of 'em are ugly and/or fat. They are unattractive people who are crying out for attention.
You've obviously not seen Abby (Pauley Perrette) in NCIS
curriechick 13-09-2011, 14:47 Even I love Pauley Perret, I think her Abbie character is great.
My husband and I have been to Whitby several times for the Goth Weekend at Halloween and it is the most fantastic weekend. We are not goths ourselves a bit old for that now however there are people of all ages there and the outfits they wear are amazing they look stunning. There are men dressed in waistcoats and long black tailcoats carrying walking cane and wearing top hats and they look great.
All the pubs are decked out to welcome the goths and there is never any trouble, we go into pubs and are surrounded by them (and incidentally none of them have ever smelt of wee or anything offensive at all) and they are so polite and welcoming we usually get into conversation with a group of them and they don't mind us asking questions about their dress ect.
If you want a great weekend away with a difference I would highly recommend it, but you do have to book early as it books up quickly and the sight of a goth the morning after at breakfast can take some getting used to!!
We have grandhchildren ranging from 4-18 and would happily take any of them along with us.
Most of 'em are ugly and/or fat. They are unattractive people who are crying out for attention.
Lets have the latest photo of you as I suspect vous n'ettes pas le portrait d'huile ma cherie,ce n'est pas!

Harleyman 13-09-2011, 22:59 I thought Goths were those people who ransacked ancient Rome. I'm surprised there are still some around after 1600 years :o
