View Full Version : C.B. Radio in Sheffield
Years ago when I first came to Sheffield I had a C.B. in my car.
There was always a bloke on in the mornings called Eddie (Fisherman), who gave waggon drivers directions arround the city.
I once asked for directions myself and was amazed at the detail he gave, even down to the heights of the bridge's I was passing under.
There was also a lady living somewhere near Chapeltown who used to be on at tea time to talk to the truckers on the M1.
Are they still on? and does anyone else remember them or did I just dream it all?
EDIT* My handle was "The Magic Ball", what was yours?
Back in my youth i was a CB'er... I loved it...
I got in with a crowd back in Gosport... we used to have a lot of fun... Playing tricks on people along with playing mouse trap/cat& mouse? (cant think lol :? ) was great fun anyway...
The best time we had was when we parked my friends car right at the edge (where people walked past) in quite a full car park... His car was fitted with PA system... We would all sit in another friends car whilst using the CB/PA system to talk to people walking past... we called it the 'Talking Mini' we would say "excuse me... yes you! can you tell me are my wheels clean!" "do you like my colour" should have seen some of the people's faces... we had a right laugh doing it... Very daft :hihi: but hey we were kids! well ahem! thats my excuse...
It's that long since I used CB that I can't even remember what my 'handle' was
I remember talking some truckers, t'was great fun :)
steevie/d 07-02-2005, 06:49 c.b is pretty much dead in the sheff area now .dont know why it may be that people have all got ps2s and x boxes to pass the time now lol!!
As a radio amateur I had mixed feelings about CB - mainly because I got the blame for their interference! :)
I had a legal 27MHz FM rig for a while which I used mainly to speak with overseas CBers when the skip was in - sort of an additional amateur radio band for me!
I don't even know what the bands are in use today - is 27 still running? What was the other one that never took off....930? That was going to be closed, wasn't it?
Joe
PaulTansley 07-02-2005, 07:49 I bought a CB about 7 years ago just to see what it was like but it was very quiet compared to the early 80s when CB was in its element.
Eddie thee Fisherman lived in Wybourn and was disabled and had both hips replaced when I last spoke to him OOoh must be 12 years ago.
If anyone on here is from the Wybourn then they may know of him and if he is still around today.
Dj_Shadowman 07-02-2005, 08:33 Im sure I saw Eddies aerial still in his yard the last time I was in Wybourn - will have a look next time im passing.
There was also a lady living somewhere near Chapeltown who used to be on at tea time to talk to the truckers on the M1.
I remember her, she sounded really young and in actual fact was 65+ cannot think of her handle yet.
I remember about 12 years ago there was a woman on the Wybourn who's handle was 'Midland Lady' (Yes she did have a Midland CB ;)). I was only a 'chabbie' at the time and thinking i was hard, i gave myself the handle 'Dark Angel' :suspect: .
Those were the days!. There were Ariel's everywhere you looked (most of never had a licence though). I had 2 CB's, a Wagner home base which someone at IXL.CB told me was illegal?. And a Harvard with another board in it. I can't remember what it was called (possibly a midnight board), i wonder if this is what you were talking about Joe?.

Oh yeah, the midnight board was the secret AM board I think.
I used the side band a lot to QSL my handle was Multi Storie.

i gave up with mine after many years when they started givin em away with the cornflakes :-(
too many idiots who had no respect,i remember the guy who used to key up and all you could hear was a clock ticking !,
i met several friends most of who i still know,so it wasnt all bad,
i used to be in the greenfields brakers club who met up at/next to ecclesfield grammer school,
had a rotel 240 and dad had a cheapo thing in the car also had a midland am rig,it was like chalk and cheese when hearing the differance in signal strength between fm + am,
missed out on that "new" frequency that came out,but i still own all the old sett up,its just in the loft :-)
way down ..way gone

BoroughGal 07-02-2005, 22:45 he he indeed!
I had a CB when I was a teen. Wow. You ought to have seen my p*ss poor set up....!
I had a mag mount that was sat on a biscuit tin, hanging out of my bedroom window. I lived at Hillsborough, and could JUST ABOUT manage to hear people on the hill at Shirecliffe. No further! Other than (and this is where JoeP made me laugh) the lad with the best set up you've ever seen who lived on the next road to me. He used to bleed over into EVERY SINGLE channel on my CB. Tried squelshing him out, but it just wasn't having it!
All this, and I was only burning 13 candles at the time! I used to get right done off me mom for staying on till the early hours on a school night...

Same here, my mum and dad would never let me have a proper ariel mounted on the side of the house, hence the mag mount on a buscuit tin in the bedroom, but when ever the guy across the block with his GP whatever ariel would go on air the signal gauge needle would nearly snap off as it wacked across the scale to 30+ or more
CB radio days were some of the best times i have ever had.
I was a member of the "Pack Horse Breakers" based in High green. I made many friends, but i remember it being similar to todays internet chat rooms with old men perving after young girls, I started on the much better AM frequency, then went on the legal FM (The most distance i got with that was boston, unfortunatly, the Boston in Lincolnshire)
Good days, anyway 10/10 for now, catch you on the side.

Someone in the Dinnington area told me that C.B. was dead round there because of the internet.
He's probably right, all we used to do with the C.B's was natter on, which is what we do on here.
The other thing is kids are too lazy now. You'll not get a kid to fix a 'twig' up any more or spending time 'swa-ing it in' because every thing now has to be instant.
You know what, I might get my rig out of the shed this afternoon.
10/10
I was burning 18 candles... :o I also would agree that they were some of the most memorable days of my life... going on eye balls & basically having alot of fun with it...
I too had a biscuit tin as a base lol had a mic too that i almost practically had to eat so people could hear me :hihi: always wanted an echo mic but never got round to purchasing one...
My next door neighbour was also on rig so at times it was very difficult for me to get out or find a channel... His set up was alot powerful then mine. :(
My handle was Special K after the girl who learnt to body pop/dance in Breakdance the movie an Breakdance 2 Electric Boogaloo
Some of the handles i remember... Desperate Dan / Tunafish / Dr Pepa / Buddy / M & M / Animal / Buster Gonads / B & L... seems really strange now looking back :?
QSK on the side... On the side (let it slide) bring it in... Can you tell me who on line please... Who wants to know... Whats your 20... :o OMG!!!! I think i need :help: (Memories...)

LOL... I've still got mine too :hihi: doubt i would 'get out' now tho :?
10/4
Did you get the "tellers of tall tales" on the rig down here?
There was always some one on in Durham when I was a kid who made out that they had the best rig in the world and a great car or a fantasic job and it was all fibs.
One bloke I knew made out he was a electronics expert and worked all over the country fixing expensive stuff when he was in truth a out of work night watch man !!!
I recently got back my old CB radio from a chum I gave it too, who I met via CB. .
He wasn't getting anyone up near Ecclesfield, So I got it back and theres a couple of mobiles I get now and again and a couple of others around the woodseats area. .
I remember the bird who lived near J35, M1 who used to talk to all the truckers and I'd get some of the truckers heading between 35 - 34 (as you could see that strech from me bedroom window)
I remember some of the regulars when I used to use it, when I lived at me moms in Ecclesfield. .
Killaklik
Dragsta
Panasonic
Casper
But I still don't miss the goooonads that would key up and play shabba rank hardcore crudd 24/7. .
Was ruined by weiners. . . !!
dollypeg 08-02-2005, 15:55 does anyone remember any of these breakers from the 80's: Wagepacket, Studded Gold, Blue Boy, General Lee, Sapphire. Did anybody ever go to the CB club at the Royal on Abbeydale Road.
Roger Diddly Dodge...
I was on rig whilst being down south :( so i wouldnt know anyone in the Sheffield area...
The lady off junc 35 at chapeltown was sweettalker she gave traffic reports to all the truckers.
The older lady was probably LADY L.
Any one remember the BLUE ICE BREAKERS CLUB at High Green
HAPPY DAYS
BLUE SPARK
jenhoppy 09-02-2005, 16:03 What a brill thread!Really takes me back.I also remember Darren Dark Angel and his mate Paul, think Paul had a sister called Helen.
We all used to meet up at the old Asda site at Handsworth, and what laughs we had.
I think the cb kept me out of a lot of trouble in my teens, and wish it was more popular nowadays for our kids.
I remember having 'eyeballs' and really made some good friends through the 'airwaves' both old and young.
My mum used to come home from work and find 3 or 4 'breakers' parked on our front drinking tea and coffee, then off we would go to other 'breakers'houses.
We had weekends in Skeggy, trips to theme parks etc..
Would love to catch up with all the old gang, still see a few local people who were on the cb,but think a reunion would be great! What do you think?
You're all talking like it was ages ago, I only took mine out of the van the other year! I used do a lot of travelling between Shrewsbury and Nottingham and the rig came in handy for traffic reports. Not really been used since the sat nav though. :(
I never had a biscuit tin aerial, I was allowed o have one bolted on the side of the garage, with the cable in a sort of washing line fashion across to the house! Other than that, I can't really remember much.
"I was a member of the "Pack Horse Breakers" based in High green"
i went to a cb barbie up there once with a couple of mates, only seem to remember "chris" with sweet martini sat on his knee (the dirty bugger!)
he's been in the papers a lot complaining of wheelchair access to his house,
i also remeber the half cooked sausage's.....bblluuuuuggghhh..

stevie1957 09-02-2005, 18:56 Eddie, Fisherman. Now there's a blast from the past. Eddie used to have a two element beam in his back garden which could be clearly seen from the road. This fella used to get complaints from CBers all over Sheffield, Rotherham and the north midlands about him bleeding over all forty channels. He used a Melos along with a linear (burner in CB lingo). A regular comment to him was “knock it down a bit Eddy”.
Eddy’s knowledge of the South Yorkshire and the North Midlands was excellent, with many truckers entering the area shouting in particular for Eddie (Fisherman). He had no problems in giving directions to three truckers all at once.
I gave up CB radio in 1987 when I became a radio ham. By 1987 CB radio was taking a dive with all the abuse and a lot of the good CBers had had enough and were selling up.

A mass eyeball seems a good idea. I would certainly attend. I’d love to meet up with some of old CBers.
The clubs I remember in Sheffield were:
Mike Delta, who used to meet in the Three Feathers on Prince of Wales Road.
Steel City Breakers, who used to meet in the Woodburn pub before moving onto the Staniforth Arms.
Kilo Bravo ( killa watt burners) Miners Arms, Killamash.
There were other cubs in the area but the old grey matter fails me again.
mega_monty 09-02-2005, 21:58 Did any of you guys actually buy a CB Licence ? As I only had a buscuit tin set up I never actually bought one :nono:
Seem to remember CB had its own TV licence equivlant type of detector vans floating around, but never encountered them, got told off for broadcasting on Channel 9 the so called emergency channel.

My bloke found couple and we started messing around with them while he was on his way to work and I was out shopping - we were just trying to see what range they would go up to and needless to say we started being a bit silly and rude.

I used the old CB years ago (around 25) it was all AM then, we used to be scared to death of getting caught. Then they introduced the FM band and legalised it. That was the death of the old AM and it introduced CB to the youngsters, and spoilt it
Still it was fun while it lasted!

his dads handle jaywalker and his mums coconut kisses but was shortened to coco.
Hmmm... Your other half, Instant Mash was on CB long before it became legal... Tut-Tut!
I remember talking to him occasionally, along with some of the others that you list.. Sweeney (Lol from Basegreen)... MK2 (Became known as 'Mucky-2', much to his initial annoyance after we first christened him!)... Jackdaw (Poor old Jackdaw, we used to plague the life out of him at one time)... Drifter, Strider and Jaywalker also ring a bell... And I've never used legal CB in my life! ;)

JEEZ! You don't make me feel any younger, Ghozer!
If you were the first-born, I remember Rolly announcing that 'Snog Brid' was expecting you... I also remember some of us continually asking him if he'd managed to figure out what had caused it yet!
We took the mickey out of each other a lot and fortunately for him, your dad was a good sport about it all... A nice guy, your old fella.

LOL!! Yes, I was the first born, and im now 23 ;) -- how old does that make you feel?? :)
What was your handle?? Maybe my mom remembers you?
other storys my mom has told me, Was Fox and Hounds, and how everyone used to make my mom and dad be the fox since they had a 4 way postional setup on thier car, they could flick between the aerials to find the direction the signal was coming from, so when they were hounds they would always win...
Which is why they were always made to be the fox..
something along thoes lines any ways...
Jivester 08-11-2005, 16:29 I remember a lot of the people mentioned in this thread Jive Bunny (Me  ), Jet set, HMII, SK, Top Cat, Pioneer to mention a few I also remember the "top of the world" but thought it was at Treeton, Asda carpark when it was at Handsworth. Eddie Fisherman received his detailed info from Sheffield Control, which consisted of Joe Pirate, Super K, Gardner 1 & Lollipop now deceased, along with Rodbender.
Does anyone remember them, they did receive a mention in the CB magazine of the time.
Joe Pirate was the one that was on from early morning till approx. lunchtime, Eddie arose from his pit at around 11am!!
I should know, I'm the long suffering wife who used to have to pry him of the CB to go out!!!!

Hello Joanne:)
Sniffpetrol 29-12-2005, 19:50 I was on in the meadowhead area between 82 and 87, my handle was terminator (how sad does that sound now ....) i remember Wizard (chris) and some old duffer called straight deal who lived down my road who had a huge airal in his back garden and used to bleed all over my signals.
caramac55 29-12-2005, 22:25 Thought CBing had died now, it used to be big in the 80s, Remember buying a thunderpoll arial. It was massive, I used to transmit from the Shiregreen area, my handle was midnight rambler. brought some happy memories back though.
Barbarian 30-12-2005, 09:55 In the 70s, when CB was AM and only a few had them, I used to bring them in from Germany on regular runs sell them to Steel City custom trucks on Penistone road and she would sell them on. I wonder how many of you had a set via me? My handle back then was DD.
I still have a CB in my truck(now fully legal), I have one in my car but its very rarely switched on. Unfortunatly nowdays theres too much mike keying and playing music around Ch 19. In the 70s we used to break on Ch 4 in Sheffield, then move to other channels to keep 4 clear. Similarly Ch 19 was kept clear for truckers and ch 9 for emergancys. If you swore on the net, you were called a bucket mouth, and then no body would speak to you for ages.
I often still listen in on ch 19, but unless called or someone asking for a rig check, rarely break.
There is a chap up near Northern Gen Hosp, Sheffield control, handle of gardener one, still giving out directions and advice to users.
We down and on the side
Barbarian:thumbsup:
What a thread..i had a cb in the late 70's and through the early 80's till about 85 i think...I used to be on the am which was illigal then, what memories..and really great times.
My handle then was sky-liner..from Pitsmoor..happy days..

My handle back then was -- Noddy  I can remember I had a Rotel240, and then, I think it was called a Audioline, and one of theose tripod ariels, cannot remember the name of it.
custardcream 07-01-2006, 15:12 I remember a guy who was mobile he'd be all over sheffield/rotherham and would park up on boston castle, manor lane and the 'yellow van' at Shirecliffe....you'd get other breakers shoutin him on 19 to ask if he could run them to the garage for sum fags etc....he was always takin the p**s and having a laugh....he knocked about at first with bullseye later renamed shag-nicely and then a few years later with the Scatman.....i think they called him Gary Shagnasty......does anyone else know him??

Hi fellow CB'ers....
I have managed to acquire a CB rig from a friend, it is a mobile set up that I am using as a home base, I used to be on the CB many, many years ago as Monkey Magic, ah, the memories from the 80's....
Anyways, I am planning on getting myself a decent set up from Bardwells or somewhere else, not sure yet, so, I am on the air at the moment and will be on permanently at a later date, guess what my handle will be - yup, you guessed it, Kryten.....lol, I have already spoken to one guy in Arbourthorne, a chap called Maniac, personal was Lee, he was a nice gent who was very helpful.
At the moment I can easily get down Hillsborough and I am up Stannington, so, not too bad considering it is a tiny mag mounted whip, nothing fantastic, might do better when I get a decent twig, so, listen out for me and give me a shout.
thes_cat_man 09-03-2006, 18:27 When i grow up i want to be a racing driver he,he!!

thes_cat_man 11-03-2006, 15:13 hi scatman haw are you.and why a racing driver your not that good lol
I could be if you let me show you ;)
While I am on this thread, I wondered if anyone could give me some help...
I went to Bardwells and purchased a CB aerial, it is a Venom 1/2 Wave, I also bought an SWR meter, I have SWaR'd it and I am getting a very high reading, about 6.0 when I know it should be down the bottom at around 1.0 - 2.0.
I know that to alter that reading I should alter the length of the aerial, which I have tried, but, it does not seem to make any difference, I have never attempted this before, I am not even sure if it might be the coax or the ground plane, I have the aerial bracketed onto my balcony, it is a mini shared balcony on a maisonette, and I would have thought that this was suitable, so, if anyone can offer some suggestions or advice, give me a shout please.
I have tested another aerial on the SWR meter, a small mobile twig on a magmount which I stick to the underside of my window which is all metal, it is a big metal sheet kind of thing, when I test it on the meter, it gives the right amount, between 1.0 and 2.0, so, something is definately wrong somewhere.
 hi your coax cable needs to be checked other than than your SWR meter is wrong .But sounds like your cable as a break in it
The Coax is brand new, just bought it, so, not sure if it is that, I have been told to reduce my aerial to 13 foot, it currently is at 18 foot, so, when I have the rig set up again I shall be trying that out.
Jovxracing 12-03-2006, 13:39 [QUOTE=thes_cat_man]I could be if you let me show you ;)[/QUOTE
iv seen you drive . been there done that sceared s*#tless
thes_cat_man 12-03-2006, 14:32 Who says i were talkin bout my driving!!!:D
only increase and retract you antana by a few inchs at a time mate 13 feet is to small for the band width ;) .9 feet would work as it has to be equal or half the size ye and also check your grounding is ok .if not run a copper cable to ground ye should bring swr down .but make shure the cable is equal to your antena in length or half
Transcom1 12-03-2006, 18:24 hi diesel babe,what was your handle....
well if its not dave transcom ;) hows it goin mi ol fruit

Hmmm, your saying that 13 feet is too short but that I should reduce it to 9 feet, strange, I don't understand why making it shorter than 13 feet would sort it, you will have to explain.
Anyways, I shall be trying various things out when I have got the rig set up again, dunno if any of you lot heard me the other day, I went driving around Sheffield in a Volvo and got chatting to a few people on the rig, I was receiving one guy who is based up at Northern General while we drove through Batemoor, Dronfield and Barnsley all the way up the M1 to Stocksbridge, pretty good I thought.
chocotiger 13-03-2006, 12:50 Is any one still in touch with Red Alert( Nidge) or Good Eyes (Sharon). I would love to say "Hi" not seen them for ages.
no1machinist 13-03-2006, 13:12 There used to be a sandwich wagon at the end of the Wicker towards Attercliffe. Back in the 80's all the CB freaks used to head down there to meet up and grab a steak sarnie at about 2 in the morning. Cb's cost a few relationships back then, bloke works all day his bird on the CB all night.Looby Lou is one handle I remember, and although no more CB, she is still known by it today.

Thanks for your help so far, I have bought some more coax and two PL259 plugs so, I shall be making another cable to make sure that it is not the existing coax that is the problem, I have tried adjusting the aerial to different lengths and the SWR reading stays the same, 6.0, so, the only thing left that can be adjusted is the coax, if that doesn't work, I have a mobile aerial on a magmount and I shall make use of that for the time being.

Yup, I did chat to Maniac from Arbourthorne, the Handle is Kryten, I have sussed out the aerial problem, it WAS the cable and not the aerial, so, all I need is a working cable, which is easier said than done, I am useless at soldering, so, gonna get a mate to help out in that department.

Tommy (Bass) 22-07-2006, 00:38 I was Sid Vicious, Johnny Rotten, Firestone and various others between about 1981 and 1988 (ish) and Buccaneer was my partner in crime so to speak.
Yes I was the bugger who would key his mic in and play punk all day along with Rabid Baby from Intake we could bleed on all the channels and be a right pain in the bum :D
Bugadifino 22-07-2006, 14:04 Interesting thread, lots of familiar "Handles" got the memory jogged. Was on air round Sheffield all through the 90's always mobile while doing my deliveries. Went under the name of "Busybee" always used to be lurking, Now a "Ham" so not on this band very much, but still got the gear so you never know. Made some very good friends on CB, and hope a lot of you remember me. 10-10 till we do it again, LOL

auctionman 10-09-2006, 00:13  hi your coax cable needs to be checked other than than your SWR meter is wrong .But sounds like your cable as a break in it
typical sheffield breakers ,havn't you learnt yet to use a dummy load and swr the co-ax in first, just like the 80,s all the legal eagle late comers coming on and knowing nothing and the original "rebels" from rotherham having to go and educate them, and yes were still around the thrybergh elite ,just listening and waiting all except rudolph he's on,mind you he's never grown up either now what was his handle r,rudolphs mate, the thorn in the side of sheffield breakers, fisherman knows him ,red dragon knows him,i know him ,its me
