Hullo!

Inspired by some brilliant photo's on here, I'm thinking of buying a bit of kit in the New Year.

Can anyone tell me what sort of things are desirable? I've not got much of a budget, I reckon about £300 ish, so can anyone advise me on anything around that mark that offers a lot for the money? Do you know what sort of lenses and stuff I'd need?

I'm totally in the dark with this, I want to have a go at getting better, but don't really know a thing about anything.

Cheers for ANY advice.... (and cheers Ash for the offer of a loan of your equipment, but when I get an idea in my head I just have to do it!)....

:D

imho - try and get ona day with Going Digital - after you've bought your camera. i've had an SLR on auto for 2 years before i went on a one day course.excellent and informal.
i'm a big fan of Canon, you might get a second hand 300 or 350d for your brass.the 400d is arond 450quid i think at the moment.

Ooooooh cheers for that! I'd like to go on a little course, so that I can do some funky effects, it sounds like a good idea. Are the courses pricey?

And do you have any tips for second hand cameras? Where to get them or what to look for?

Cheers.

I wonder if Jacobs in Town still do second hand stuff. I've not been into to town for years:hihi: (it's probably not even there anymore)

Harrisons on London rd, i bought a 300 from there. CEX in town - we bought a refurb 300d for the son in law from there.
if you ring Harrisons they'll tell you if they have any in.
the day courses are £45 - the nearest is @ Hardwick Hall, but they are ideal to get to know your camera with other "virigins" and a couple of professionals.

If not try Jessops or if your are venturing further try Sheffield Photo Centre on Eccy Rd. :)

Oh brilliant! And Jessops price match too, don't they?

Has that got everything I'd need then? Cos I'm totally new to it...

it will have the camera, software and the standard lens.which are suitable to get you on your way. you will in due course need other lenses, but not from day one.other than that you'll need a memory card -they may have one in the box. otherwise you can get one cheaply enough.(£10)

Thats dead helpful, thank you. Despite that one being cheap, I'm going to hang on till after Christmas, I think, just to see whether they come down more (although, knowing my luck, I'll probably miss right out all together)!

you could still grab a bargain in the New Year, another forummer got one recently with an extra lens for about £450.00.
it might pay you to wait - you never know what Santa might bring-(££££)

I know Canon are doing a cash back offer if you purchase a DSLR before the 31st of December. The 400D has £50 cash back so it will cost you just under £400.

When i purchased my Canon DSLR and send off my claims form, it took Canon less than 10 days to sent me my £70 cash back cheque.

i know someone who may be tempted to part with an immaculate 300d kit (camera and 18-55mm lens)for £250.

Jessops are doing D-SLRs with £10 off until end of tomorrow. Nikon D40 also has 30 quid cashback from Nikon. Think that brings it in at around £260. Don't buy your memory cards from the High Street though as they're way too expensive - try www.picstop.co.uk or www.play.com.

Agrred about the memory cards. The high street charge way over the odds. If you are a member of costco or know someone who is, their memry cards (all sandisk) are very competative.

Ah yes thanks. I've bought memory cards before for my point and shoot camera, and my phone, so that is the one aspect I know about! Thank you though. :)

Hmmm I'm already encountering this, but figured I ought to understand what I want before I jump feet first into buying EVERYTHING NOW!!! Much as I've already been tempted.

At least you can get the battery fully charged, so you will be ready to go once the CF card arrives :)

Then you can get used to the controls etc, read the manual and find out what all the buttons and knobs do.

DaFoot

I've not used PhotoBucket, though I believe it to be similar. Most folks I have spoken to seem to prefer Flickr of the two, but I doubt there's any really differance.
