I started my working life at S&J in 1957 and met my wife there.I worked in the lab and then the melting shop. I left in 1969.They were great days.We had a great Sports Club.Lunchtimes we had a sports room which had 2 table tennis tables, full size snooker table, dartboard and even a record player so we could rock and roll.
I remember lots of people but one person in particular we have been trying to trace is Janet Hutson. She married another S&J lad,Graham Gibson, but they divorced.Any help would be appreciated.
W dept produced H I Teeth.Names I remember from there are Johny Womack and a toolmaker who was also called John. The manager was Harry Ward.
Really Good Days.

Your Mum also worked there. When I started there in 1957, in the Lab, she was our "Kitchen Maid" She used to mash our tea, fetch sandwiches and generally look after us.
I remember your Dad.He was a grinder.I also remember playing in Brass Bands with him during the 60's.Last time I saw him was on Hartley Brook Rd. Wasn't he a local councillor?
I also remember your brother Elvin whom I think was a sawsmith. We played football for Spears. He was a flying left winger.
I have sent you a PM

I started work at Spear & Jackson in 1963 when I left school but left after a few years. However I went back in 1971 and guess what? I,m still there. We have moved since those days but I still remember many of my old workmates with great fondness. Some have now sadly passed on but others are still with us and some are still working with me to this day.Elvin is still there (Sammyc) and so is Jeff Hall .We all used to work in the I.C.S.Dept. on the top floor at Norfolk Bridge. They were very happy days but now sadly long gone.

i worked there in the 80s first on the drop stamps with harry then i went in the rolling mill as a odd lad (Steve Adcock) then we went on two shifts albert was the roller, fred Chinney) was the furnace man colin was the middler, saied was the cog backer and i was the odd lad i cannot remember the engine mans name but he retired whilst i was there and i took over his job when two shifts finished on the day shift brian cox was the roller on the second shift the rest was made up of temps i cannot remember the furnace man he was a tall military type with a foul temper barry wragg was the mill manager and bob king looked after the melting shops and the steel wharehouse and forge. a coloured guy calld chris used to burn all the billits to size these were some of my best times in my working life these guys were gems and the best workmates any one could wish for could have colin and myself used to share double shifts to light and charge the furnaces on a regular basis
